syntaxfunction posted:I have never taken a university exam here (Australia) that allowed content not covered in class or with directions towards material. What the actual gently caress. I had one class in university on compilers. During one single lecture in the first week we went through the base level do-it-by-hand method with constructing a translation table and then stepping through to find the end result. None of the labs or assignments had that as the material, and we were explicitly told that we would never need it and it’s all done by the computer in a millisecond now. The rest of the class was using tools that handle that part and treating that bit of knowledge like a black box where it didn’t matter if you actually knew how it worked as it wouldn’t affect real world application at all. Then the final exam was entirely on making and using those tables. I got like 12%, and that was about average for the class. (students brought up that we were instructed that this specific material would never be on a test, and the exam got thrown out, which took my mark from an F up to an A)

I got accused of cheating in a University level test that required us to hand write our coding answers in 'psudo-code' and I thought "why gently caress around, just write the real code that I know" Got dragged aside for cheating and failed. Maybe it was karma for the time I cheated on an assignment in HS copying an article on DirectX coding, and teh teacher showed her dumb poo poo son who said 'DX isnt coding, its graphics driver' so I got failed and couldn't really try to argue it without being caught out.

Phosphine posted:The math department at my university (and elsewhere, probably), famously considers students getting max points a failure of test writing, because that means it wasn't comprehensive enough. It was also common for 12/16/20 to be the grade cutoffs (we have three grades, 3, 4 and 5, don't ask), with a max score of like, 35. This was a baffling practice in my physics department. They aimed for averages on exams in the neighborhood of 50% and then would just arbitrarily assign the letter grades in the end (at best some professors actually disclosed a formula to show how it was determined). It's honestly one of the reasons I walked away from my PhD program: I had the 2nd highest raw average in the classical mechanics course (we all compared) at around 72% with the highest having a 76ish. All the little kiddies (fresh out of undergrad) who had full funding failed out of the program that semester (then that money just vanished), somehow I got a B and the professor refused to explain how that was determined. I went to the department head who basically just said, "Trust me, it's valid," which is a hell of a choice for a scientist. The exact same thing happened in my math course that semester, so I decided to bail out. Well, it was mostly because of the funding thing, but I also didn't want to keep banging my head against the wall of capricious grading choices. Given where I'd been in undergrad years ago, I was really, really proud of having a 3.8 in my PhD program, especially when my classmates were whining incessantly about how hard and unfair life was because they had to supervise one whole physics lab a week while I was working full time as a software engineer. Department politics in academia sucks.

When this was later discovered they were confused as no world records were set. Further investigation revealed the participants were all Irishmen.
