Urianger is just the sketchy advisor guy in the shape of a hot elf hiding under a potato sack, except he's on your side and genuinely wants you to succeed even when his galaxy brain plans cause problems. I think this was about the point where I was like "haha funny-talking elf man is suspicious " because literally everything he does is so shady it wraps about around to not being notable anymore. That's Urianger, the way he breathes is incredibly suspicious and he's our pal.

One thing to consider about FF14 areas is that they've always been designed for consoles. For ARR and HW, this meant the PS3 with its 256MB of RAM, 256MB of VRAM, and a CPU with a very strange architecture that required a lot of processor-specific coding if you wanted to get the most out of it. PS3 support ended at the launch of Stormblood, so that expansion didn't have to be designed around PS3 limitations, but then they'd already spent the base game and the first expansion basing their map design and aesthetic around the limitations of a console that was seven years old when ARR was released and nine years old when HW was released.

(For the record, in character Kheris has not forgiven Urianger for the Warriors of Darkness episode, since there's been nothing to significantly indicate the Warrior of Light's feelings one way or the other since then, at least that I've noticed. She went above and beyond trusting him during the Warring Triad situation, covering his lies and omissions for Unu's sake. She doesn't take the burn he dealt her in return lightly, particularly since it sealed Minfilia's fate) (I on the other hand love that big galoot)

Fortunately, "I love Urianger because he's a big idiot doofus" and "my character wants to shove Urianger in a locker for his psuedo-Machiavellian horseshit" are not remotely exclusive feelings.

As a player we also have the benefit of hearing his little monologue during the Warriors of Darkness plot before we have the big throwdown in Thanalan. Which makes it painfully obvious that Urianger is not looking to betray us but thread the needle on being stuck between Elidibus, the Warriors of Darkness, the Scions and the fate of two worlds.

urianger or yshtola absolutely should have died in place of moenbryda, as at that point in the story all three fulfilled the same narrative purpose and of the three only moenbryda had a character but they did an okay job slowly giving urianger literally anything to do, and also killing Y'shtola both times they've run out of things to do with her

Moenbryda's personality was literally just being cooler in every way than the characters you generally hang with (she's smarter than the smart scions, more action-y than Yda, she outdrinks Thancred, she has a Cool Axe) so that you'd be sad when she died. obviously if she lived presumably she would've mellowed and revealed appropriately endearing faults, but as executed she was basically just a textual version of what the warrior of light is already implied to be, and i think would've overlapped with a female warrior of light in unfun ways (meanwhile if you're a dude the many dude scions are all slightly cringe or fail in ways that are both delightful and make them Clearly Not The Protagonist). e: perhaps the most important way in which she is cooler than all other scions was being Emotionally Normal, which also would have really thrown off everything that followed her Valentin fucked around with this message at 18:12 on Apr 18, 2023 |

I thought I heard that the writer who made her, Ishikawa, hadn’t planned for her to be killed and was rather annoyed when the person working on the next expansion just up and killed her? Or maybe it was she didn’t realize Moony would be killed so soon/fast? I can’t remember. I’ve been playing this game so long I’ve got way too much half remembered ancillary crap floating loose in my memory.

I think the interview in question, she said that other writers kept killing characters she wrote, without naming names, and the fandom extrapolated that she meant Moenbryda and Haurchefant.

It's kind of lame that Moenbryda dies and has so little presence in the story that her death is more about how it affects Urianger. I don't think a death during the encounter was a bad idea, it certainly personalized the stakes of the Ascian conflict in a huge way. I don't even think Moenbryda was the wrong choice on paper since they went to the trouble of establishing her importance to Yda and Minfilia and developing her personal relationship with the WoL on top the romantic angle with Urianger. Plus the fact that she dies to save Minfilia specifically has thematic implications for the larger story of the 2.0 patches, which is partially about Minfilia and the Warrior of Light's relationship and how they grow into their role on the national stage. Again, the biggest flaw was her obviously disposable nature in retrospect. If Y'shtola or Papalymo or even Urianger had made that sacrifice and Moenbryda had then taken their place in the Scion lineup, or if Moen had been part of our merry band from the start, I think the whole thing would have been essentially perfect as a story beat.

Imo Minfilia should have died there, and then later we discover due to her dying wielding a flood of aether, Hydaelen was able to intercept her soul on its way to the lifestream so nothing about her role in Heavensward has to change.

i think with some story rejiggering they could have absolutely swapped papalymo and moenbryda's deaths, with the added bonus of potentially getting to see how moen would have reacted to urianger's warriors of darkness gambit

That'd be more than a little rejiggering, Yda/Lyse would have to be totally rewritten. Which I know some people in this thread are absolutely in favor of regardless, but that's not the point I'm making here.

Sanguinia posted:The Scions leave the troops to their work and start charging through the front lines. There's a running fight down a half-dozen streets and alleys, which convey a truly impressive sense of size to the city and evoke the fantasy of urban combat. It really feels like we're engaged in an intimate and gruesome brawl, meeting our enemy at the knife's edge. Almost since the expansion began, I'd been waiting for this. No more sneaky stratagems, skirmishes, or covert ops. No more waiting for the moment to strike while others pay the butcher's bill. This is the feeling of locking horns with the Empire, not their conscripts or backwater levies, but the elite regulars of the Crown Prince's Legion. We are face to face against the military power whose shadow has loomed over the game world since its earliest levels in a pitched battle, and it's glorious. I've been waiting for this. To see how our Warrior of Light feels when the all the plotting is finally done; when the dogs of war are loosed. She did not disappoint. Enjoy the hunt. quote:It's difficult for me to express what a disappointment this was. The notion of fighting an enemy who could foresee my every move, a mechanical depiction of what fighting the player might look like from a boss's point of view, excited me to no end. More generally, I had high hopes for this third confrontation with Fordola because her journey fighting me reflected my journey fighting Zenos. When we first crossed swords, she was as powerless as a random monster on the overworld, but in the second round, she brought new weapons, new tactics, and a burning desire to prove herself to her patron in the wake of being gifted the gunblade. Our third battle should have been something special. Instead, it was a glorified cutscene. It exists not to pay off any tension with the Warrior of Light but the tension with Lyse. Fordola is so spirited...and yet so empty. Let's hope her patreon doesn't disappoint you.

by now they've given them all pretty well-established niches, but back at the time, well, Urianger gave you the quests about the primals, Y'shtola was frustrated with what a drawn-out mess the run-up to Titan was that one time, and Papalymo was... well, the MSQ occasionally remembered he existed, which was more than could be said for Alisae.
