lol the top trending topic on Twitter is "Pay the $8" Also, Elmo is repeatedly admitting that he "personally paid for" some celebs' blue checks. He's now saying "you're welcome" to celebs like Stephen King even though they don't want it. Lebron even specifically told Elon not to give him a blue check but he did it against his will anyway

Just so I’ve got this right, Musk inherited an imperfect but logical verification system and decided to: 1) Make it so anyone could appear to be famous - because that is what the tick was analogous to, and was the singular reason the subscription had any appeal. 2) He makes it look identical to the legacy verification, so the people using Twitter have to disambiguate between “real” and “fake” verified accounts. 3) He tells the legacy folk that theirs are being removed, because it’s a “lords and peasants” system that was corrupt and opaque in how it was implemented. 4) He removes them, but none of the important people actually sign up for it because - quite rightly - why the gently caress should they have to pay when they’re driving traffic to the site in the first place. 5) Sensing an abject failure of his brilliant plan, he gifts an unspecified number of notable entries free Twitter Blue, so they get a check back without having to pay for it, thus recreating the opaque “lords and peasants” system of Twitter 1.0. 6) As icing on the cake he’s now got both the serfs that looked up to him and cheered when he criticised the old meritocratic system asking why they have to pay when Stephen King, etc don’t, and his new system now provides an easy, at a glance way to spot people to block or ignore. I’m sensing this guy might not be that clever, really.
