No problem at all just booting into Windows 11 from a SATA M.2 enclosure. I followed the guide here, but it's very simple and the only possible hiccup seems to be getting the drivers into the new install, since you have to change the permissions for a folder to do that.

I installed Office and Zoom and ran a little test screensharing call:

Works perfectly. Kind of wondering if I shouldn't just remote into it as my demo machine because of its incredibly low power requirements. Now I have this for whenever it's needed!

It even boots when attached to my cheapo USB-C extender/hub thing.

It occasionally comes up in this thread about how people do/want to/could use the Deck as their primary PC, and perhaps that's true. I'm just saying that the reality is that I wouldn't want to put 40 hrs/week of mileage on the Deck just for productivity use because it will shorten the lifespan of components (notably fans) and I'd rather reserve my Deck usage for actual gaming.

But sure if you're able to integrate the Deck into your workflow as a backup/emergency device that you're already carrying around so you can game (or it gives you an excuse to carry it around), sure that's great.

At home, my computer is used for video games and porn so it can replace my desktop no question. The only issue is with office applications. But, honestly, I shouldn't be using office applications at home.

Thanks I hate it.

I would say that the one thing I find rather frustrating about the Deck is that there's no eGPU support. I'd really like to be able to play games handheld, or plug it into a dock that's connected to an eGPU.

Also the bezels are really big.

Maybe version 2 will have these in 10 years!

It does and it works great but I'm not sure if the RE4HD mod does

The HD mod just modifies the base executable and adds a bunch of new textures to the game files. If you had it working with the base game I would think it would still work fine once you apply the mod. But I didn't try it without the mod so maybe there's some weird conflict.

What do you mean "mapped to an Xbox 360-style layout"? Steam treats it in XInput mode as a XBox controller, complete with button layout. By default the inputs will not match the layout of the face buttons. You can manually click an option in the controller settings to have it use the Nintendo layout.

I've randomly gotten into fifa 22 after not playing sports games for over a decade. It's become my default deck game while watching tv especially the weird player rpg thing. It's a lot of fun.

Unfortunately the game won't launch anymore and just goes to the stupid EA app which then crashes. Verifying doesn't help.

I've never been overly bothered by the dumb launcher thing but on the deck they really suck. I dunno if it was a steam or EA update that killed it. Gimme back my football game ya bastards

I mean like if I use the RE4HD mod, is there enough buttons on a 360 controller layout to play the mod properly

The PC version of RE4HD (which the HD texture mod runs on) is based on the 360/PS4 port of the game. It has controller support out of the box, specifically for the 360 controller.

This is the version of the game we're talking about, right?

I totally get being crazy prepared. Customs hosed up your Laptop? Have a backup. Have a backup for your backup. Be prepared to hold your presentation on chalkboard if necessary.

Ditto - multiple copies and formats on multiple volumes. Because something might break, because PowerPoint might not start up or be a weird version, because maybe there's no slot for a USB stick ...

Started playing Volume (stealth game) on the deck and the graphics and text especially are all blurry, like there's a low level of fog. Anyone seen this?

Got a 2TB WD SN740 for $277 Oz Dollarydoos from Ali Express. Ordered 6th April, came today, installed well, cloned my 512gb and then it shat itself so reimaged the drive and now I'll have too many games installed and my backlog will grow.

Had to confirm receipt of drive in good condition so they would release the payment to the seller, no issues so all good for crushing despair over what game to play. Will probably only still play Stardew

Quiet day at work today so I did the install over my lunch break. Direct clone from the deck to the new drive via Clonezilla, usb hub and m.2 enclosure.

The clone went fine and so did the physical replacement; some of the screws were a bit stubborn but it was just a matter of gently trying a few different bits.

Everything booted fine, so I'll try some benchmarking software later to see how the drive holds up (after it gets through the massive download queue I've given it...)

I got it from LZB Storage, which I think someone linked earlier in the thread https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004901239395.html

I've installed it on the Deck. As you said there's step-by-step instructions on the RE4HD Project website. It was a bit of a pain in the rear end but nothing too crazy. Once you have all the files you need on your Deck (you should dl to pc first and then transfer bc the fastest dl method is a torrent) it only takes like 20 minutes of setup.
