Is a video but still solidly "terrible car stuff", youtuber who seemed to know his poo poo, and basically trades on being an old car guy who is something in the classic muscle scene massively misunderstands what the spring on the bottom of an oil filter is for, and assumes that the spring is for an oil filter bypass, and not the little flap valve in the bottom of the media. Proceeds to tell everyone that "yeah your car never filters any oil if you're at anything above idle".

This is eric the car guy level bad. Or that idiot boomer Scotty Kilmer who made the video about hot to use crimp connectors on brake lines after making videos about washing out catalytic converts with magical substances to fix P0420s.

The funniest poo poo is that there's people in the comments taking his misinfo as gospel and *actually* planning on doing an "oil filter delete" and just changing their oil more often. <50 hours of use on a non-filtered application = complete loving sludge oil, and car engines since the 1950s I think have not been designed to have any sort of bypass filter system as a thing, except to prevent emergency loss of oil pressure. RIP all those tiny oil channels.

I guess if you're driving an old VW bug, there's nowhere to put the oil filter anyways, but an oil filter delete implies your car was designed for clean oil and not sludge.

Old VWs also used to advertise in newspapers how little time it took to change the engine and how much they cost.

Engine blocks as a wear item! Autozone doesn't want you to know this secret! gently caress changing your oil, just drop the engine out and put a new one in! Throw the old one in the ocean! It's a cheap and legal thrill!

This.

Also, you absolutely have space tp put a real oil filter on an ACVW. I've done it a bunch of times.

I never do that because there's a center extrusion that fits into a corresponding space where the center cap is on the rim; and going by what a ballbuster it was to get each wheel off that, it's handling all the load.

Speaking of that center extrusion, is it kosher to grease that so I don't give myself a hernia trying to get the wheel off next time?

Even on a hub centric wheel the hub center isn't what handles the load when you're driving, it's the friction caused by the lugs clamping the back of the wheel to the brake rotor/drum and wheel mounting flange.

I should have taken a picture - I finally got the plates for my Spark, so I took a closer look at my backup camera. It loving sucks, or so I thought.

Whoever installed it didn't use a bracket, at all. They just forced a screw through the part that is supposed to attach to a bracket, bending the metal on it in the process.

This just furthers my :stare: about whoever owned it before me. Installed a $899 head unit in 2013, but left the speakers alone and rigged the steering wheel controls all kinds of wrong. Then they put in a backup camera, but basically left it spinning on a single screw.

Thank God everything under the hood checks out. So far. Gonna go knock on wood.

Sounds like my buddy's van! He got a new smaller head unit, wired it up, and didn't attach it to anything, so it's just been flopping around for about a decade, now.

My brother in Christ, you would not *believe* the lengths some people will go to to avoid being “cheated” by a professional installer. They seem to think any idiot can do what we do (I was a mobile electronics installer in a previous life), and inevitably prove the opposite.
I’ve fixed professional installs that were incredibly bad. Usually because they’re being lazy.
Just think of how many home repairs, involving expensive items attached to substantial investment and you’ll understand how it can happen to a car. Dunning-Kruger is a hell of a thing.

well, that's the thing, right? many installers are going to do the same slap-dash installs, you've fixed them yourself. if someone is clued in enough to be able to evaluate how good an installer is, they probably can do the work themselves. and everyone who does a good job doesn't end up at your shop having you fix their work, lol

On that note, want to know how much the backup camera bracket cost to order, shipped?

$8.99

:stare:

I'm a full blown idiot who has made many, many bad decisions. But skimping on an $8 bracket on my car's $899 (in 2013 money) head unit is a bridge too far for my stupidity.
