The original was by Liza Minelli, Frank Sinatra started using it in his stage shows in '78 but didn't release it on an album until 1980 when it really took off.

I just realized that it's not just saying New York twice for lyrical effect or whatever, and the lyrics mean New York (City), New York (State).

In this specific instance we actually know exactly why it repeats, it's because it was written as the theme for this movie:

Most of the Jackass crew are younger than I am. I guess most of them started their TV careers at a pretty young age but Bam Margera is only 43

I wasn't the alone either, once watched a YT video of Creep titled "half the man i used to be by nirvana" complete with a slideshow of Kurt Cobain. I mean, I got it wrong too, but the uploader seems to be a fan of Cobain but still thought it was Creep was a Nirvana song. I also used to think Sex and Candy was Nirvana.

I just realised that the Steven Universe episode "Kiki's Pizza Delivery Service" - and, very probably, the reason the character is named Kiki - is a reference to the movie "Kiki's Delivery Service". I haven't seen that movie, but I've watched the whole series of SU five or six times.

I used to watch MST3K a bit as a kid, and in the last couple years or so I've been watching it again and... I just realized that the long hallway transition is probably the literal route the characters take from one side of the dog bone-shaped Satellite of Love to the other.

If Mike/Joel, Tom Servo, Crow, and Cambot all start going down the hallway at the same time, but we don't see everyone ahead of Cambot, how can Mike/Joel, Tom Servo, and Crow be sitting down or are already seated when Cambot gets there? I think they answer this in fanmail once and they say they just use the back entrance. What back entrance? You should really just relax.

They were popular during an era where just being gay was still scandalized or the zero-effort butt of a joke, coming completely out of the closet was still pretty fraught, and a lot of their casino audience would be happy with their relationship being an open secret so they can pretend not to know.

When I was growing up, "Siegfried and Roy are gay!!" was this common playground thing. I didn't even know what it meant to be gay -- I thought it meant you were poor, maybe? All I ever knew was that being gay was the worst thing in the world, and if you touched your dick it made you gay.

They were rumored to be gay but people were also in disbelief like that’s too crazy.

Not really a thing I just realized, but I always have to be reminded the REO Speedwagon is a car as well as a band. What is a thing I just learned is that the car is pronounced "ree-oh" instead of spelled out.
