Tree Bucket posted:Well, most birds have no trouble getting high Birds love to get absolutely trashed. Keruru in NZ regularly get banjaxed drunk on fermented fruit, to the extent that they have to be collected in baskets to save them from getting eaten while plastered. Various species of Waxwing have gigantic livers to cope with all the boozing they do every day. tl/dr Birds are barflys whenever they get the chance.

Re: birds with delightful songs, it's that time of the year again when the first blackbirds are appearing here, and it makes me so happy. They tend to sing a lot at the wee hours when most other birds are quiet, so it really stands out how immaculately clear and melodious their sound is. I could listen to them for hours on end. (except I can't, because the sound is super soothing to me and I fall asleep) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wav6-GPBHZI

I could also listen to this forever, except my cat came over within seconds and started trying to hunt my monitor.

The rooster was at that shop again. I just love it when he visits. How rare is it for roosters to be chill?

These are corellas. They're loud. Really really really loud. This was but a fraction of their stupidly huge flock, but my zoom lens wouldn't go any wider. They're loud.

Thousands of these come to trees near my place to hang out every spring and OP above doesn't do justice to just how loud they are. I've been to raves where I couldn't get too close to the speakers or my stomach contents would shake to the bass and that wasn't as loud as these guys get.

I don't know why, but this horse had a bodyguard of half a dozen egrets. Whenever he took a step, they'd bunch up and follow him, watching in all directions. I don't know enough about horses or egrets to say why.

Those are cattle egrets. They eat all the bugs and small critters stirred up by the horse moving around and eating grass.

Mockingbirds are the best. A couple of years ago there was a pair on my block who would harass my neighbors cat, to the point where I actually saw them sitting on the neighbors deck yelling and screaming at the cat, while the cat was inside his own house. It got to the point where we could tell whenever the cat was around because we could hear the mockingbirds losing their poo poo outside even with the windows closed.

Saw some new birds in our backyard over the past few days. White-crowned sparrow and a red winged blackbird. Thought the sparrow was a nuthatch, but the beak and coloring didn't match. The merlin app is great for identifying birds. Wasn't able to to get a picture of either, so here are ones from GIS.

Teenage birbs all seem to look just like the adults except slightly scruffier, and constantly helplessly screaming for food which they apparently have the appetite of a forest fire for. ...okay, not much different.
