I played the game without a guide because everyone and their mother was like "don't use a guide its so reactive and cool!" and it turns out there are unlabeled "you get no credit for doing this sidequest and its permanently gone" outcomes to the quests tied to making that mandatory shivers check easier and I've hit absolutely all of them possible for this point in the game. I'm not even speed-running, I've done literally every possible sidequest at this juncture in the game.

If I had played with a guide I'd still be complaining, because my complaint would be "oof this shivers check doesn't need to be mandatory like this and also it seems kind of rude that you can without any warning fail to get any bonuses to it, thus effectively soft locking you behind a very low RNG chance". You also must pass the check, and RNG to progress is always bad, its like the most basic of instructions to starting Game Masters in role playing games.

1) Same reason any game with character creation options that vastly outclass others with no warning is a bad game.
2) This is presented as a free-form roleplaying adventure game where I can make the decisions I think are best or most interesting. Except, hidden from me, thats not actually true at all and now in order to pass this gate keeping I noted I'm literally looking up a walkthrough guide and choosing certain dialogs so I get to keep playing

barudak is mostly benign, his taste is just esoteric to the point of uselessness (most of his praise is for machine-translated wuxia games) and he periodically exaggerates his accounts of whatever third-string adventure game he's playing so you can't tell where his obtuseness starts and ends. this one just stuck out because he was slagging a game people actually played for a change

It's a check that's also boosted by tons of sidequests you do, too. I think my final bonus was +21 last time I played and tried to engage with every NPC?

e- yeah here's a snip:

A 97% is the highest you can get, because you always auto fail on two 1s, but the number of bonuses you can get is huge. Shivers is also a really cool stat that only contributes cool stuff to dialog, so it's never wrong to boost it, either.

The cryptozoologist's wife is one of the first NPCs you encounter in the game. You can straight up collide with her wheelchair if you gently caress a roll up. She is the nicest person in the game. Basic empathy would make you want to help her out and get attached to her. Curiosity about the world and what she has to say about it would lead you to asking her about cryptids because it's fun.

Also if you attempt and fail the check twice, you will unlock a side quest that gives a bigger bonus than any of those. I think this goes for any check that is required to progress a main story quest, and you're introduced to this concept on day one.
