GT-Four port pics are in! Makes me embarrassed as to the state of my current car, appears to be a pretty clean interior. This was the auction sheet: quote:5mt, ac, OZ wheels, trd gauges, leather seat covers, display audio, mileage unverified, interior dirty/worn, wheels scratched, undercarriage surface rust/corrosion, other dents/scratches/paint cracks/paint waves Gauge cluster has been replaced; I need to start diving into some of the Toyota forums and figure out what (if any) VCDS-equivalent tools exist to poke around the few ECUs on this.

Anyone have any experience selling on cars and bids? It’s time to let go of my kei truck, so I figured a wider audience was better to get it sold. I’m not trying to flip for a huge profit, but selling no reserve seems risky.

Somewhat related to the thread: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRG0Wai4sR0 In which Donut Media learns about all the incredible grift surrounding importing vehicles, this time an itty-bitty Chinese electric truck. tl, dr: Basically, they could have bought an already-imported Kei truck.

Does anyone else think importing has become more popular? Or at least buying from importers? In my neighborhood alone (Orlando, FL), there’s a Nissan figaro, a house with 2 kei trucks and an original mini cooper, another with 2 of the older, smaller G-wagens and a celica that looks like a GT-Four. We passed an R32 skyline here the other day. These have all popped up in the last couple years. I do see kei trucks on the road here too, but I’m not sure if they’re that person above or someone else.

CARB is the big major reason the answer is "no" but there are exceptions as there is nothing written in stone that says they don't allow imported vehicles, just a matter of practice. You can get vehicles in under exception, at least if seen and heard it happening, it's just out of reach of most mere mortals.

Had a buyer take a diesel Prado and got it certified in California for $10k. I asked them for before and after pics, and advised them not to but they did. As far as I can tell someone had it at a shop for a week, waved their hand over it and put a compliance sticker under the hood. Now that is a scam I want in on. But I never want to go to California so I guess not an option.

As I understand it, an imported diesel would have to comply with whatever year specific emissions existed in CA at it's time of manufacture... and a lab test at one specific facility to prove it. To me the question is really: What do Cali regs look like in the mid 90s for diesel emissions? I'd be unsurprised if unofficially they're compliant by default so you're basically paying $10k to sniff the tailpipe or say you did and slap a sticker on it.

This thing loving rules. It really has no deficiencies that I can tell in so much as a vehicle. It's a very quick, light, turbocharged AWD manual transmission wagon with over 250 hp, with radically awesome interior design but it's also just nice and comfortable. AC works great, the speakers are great (my dire straits CD being stuck inside the 6 disc changer is less great) and it has an rear end that won't quit. The only issues (besides the stuck CD) is the head unit's LCD display is all hosed up so you can't tell what it's trying to tell you. Am I adjusting bass? Treble? Fade? What is the radio station? A mystery! Thankfully it's a double din so I have multiple options. The wheels look like poo poo and the tires it's wearing are winter studless, those must be replaced and the wheels refinished. And finally as always, it's dirty and needs a deep exterior clean. The interior has been detailed by the dealership I bought it from over a year ago. This Caldina was actually delivered to my house almost 2 weeks ago, literally the day I left for Japan so I've had to wait this whole time to finally see it

Following it next (pics soon)... * Sambar * MR2 * Midget II Still watching for a nice Caldina (guess I am a 3S-GTE stan), MT Soarer (rare) and occasionally peeking around for a J70...

I'd suggest my broker Henry: henry@great-world.com I've had two issues not of Henry's doing over the years since I've been importing, and Henry was directly on top of them both times holding my hand through it all. Very thorough, very trustable. The only thing I ever do is send him the BL, then later he goes "yo send me the DOT and EPA forms" and I do that then the vehicles arrive and that's it. Extremely hands off, which I appreciate. You're going to want to get a bond, no matter what import broker you use, since you're importing more than a single vehicle. I've renewed my bond even though I'm no longer a dealer just because it pays for itself after 3~ or so vehicles. I think he's technically based in California, but import brokerage is one of those things where it doesn't really matter geographically where the broker themselves is located, they should know everything needed for whatever port you deal with. I have a really good working relationship for Henry so it might benefit you to mention Devin sent you, though it doesn't matter to me as there is no like, kickbacks or anything I get. He's just pleasant to work with.

I think I will barely squeak into compliance w/ the ISF, getting it in today for sailing on the 29th.

I was just "a guy" vs. some sort of automotive professional until we all started talking about cars, turns out even the Japanese guys we were with that live and breathe all this stuff were surprised by how much stuff they didn't know related to the various vehicles I had imported and had knowledge of. Learn the stuff you're importing and maybe you too can impress the guys behind stuff like this : My particular ride on the rally and what I (barely) kept up with the N-Ones on Gunma's touge roads with: I would kill for a new Jimny as they are legitimately fantastic. Broker is doing their thing -- anyone have recs / thoughts on local ground transportation in the Tacoma, WA area? I have sent out a couple of emails to auto transport places but not hearing back (I will try calling). Or should I just plan on driving down, hiring a TWICC escort and then driving it back up?

You're going to want a transport broker, but if you can use a number you don't mind getting spammed forever and a day, same with email. Depending on how and who, you'll get transport bids on your vehicles but also get added to every email list and call list ever made.

Yeah, I have been using a burner e-mail, but I wonder if my Google Voice account is still active. I'll start making some phone calls and see what's up. How long do you typically get to pickup at a yard in the US? It'll be different port-to-port I imagine but curious what your experience was.

20 days or so at my port. I have a transport broker who can find someone if you don’t want to go through the hassle. But they just basically manage finding someone same as you probably could on your own. Have you paid the shipping line? Little things like that can prevent you getting cleared to pick up.

GramCracker posted:I saw BBL posting about this and I am WILDLY jealous you got to join this rally and spend time with both the Spoon and BBL teams. I am extremely fortunate to have met Clark (the guy behind the rally) because I was importing vehicles. We both share the same vibe when it comes to how we view and desire cars so we hit it off and becoming good friends over the years. Then he was like "hey drive keis in Japan with me" and I said "ok" and jumped in not exactly sure where or what we were going to do. He's got two of these, top one here in Japan and the bottom one in the states. Turns out we were doing a dream come true sort of once in a lifetime style driving event through the absolutely stunningly gorgeous Japanese mountains, going from Tokyo to Kanazawa making a few stops along the way then taking the Shinkansen (bullet train) back. In Tokyo I saw some cool rides and a cool store and a great skyline The Built by Legends and Spoon guys were cool as hell, very soft spoken and precise with senses of humor, in conversation too of course but also this was in the Built by Legends bathroom. This Spoon Civic was also in their studio, along with another neat car. And this was upstairs, they provided us lunch and surprise: It was great! The Prado looks so much better than any Lexus GX Saw some cool cars outside of Tokyo too. It was a real drat good time. IN THE USA HOWEVER: I refinished and painted the Caldina's wheels and stuck a set of Potenza RE71RS on it and laugh at how I simply can't run out of grip.
