Major uptick in shelling north of kupiansk on the west side of the river.
Remember sometimes the fear of a counter offensive is just as deadly for morale and troop expenditure of munitions as a real counter offensive.

As in probing or scouting missions may be met with huge barrages that just waste supplies as the one or two vehicles are miles way from the fire missions target.

Russia's doctrine of deporting the native populace and moving their people in means that countries with human rights and minority protection laws don't actually want that territory back, because they don't want to inherit hundreds of thousands of Russians. China don't care and would likely either deport the current inhabitants back across the historical Russian border, or re-educate them a la the Uyghurs.

This. Next to no-one in Finland wants the 1939 borders back because it means taking million Russians with it. Everyone who had Finnish passport was thrown out of the ceded areas after the war, or disappeared later by Stalin.

Closest thing to getting that area back would be something like lobbing for independent Republic of Karelia which includes Kola peninsula and nothing more. Don't let the assholes in Moscow to keep it, but don't ourselves want it back either. And it would be nice to live in a country that doesn't have border with Russia.

I'm not a historian but South Africa got added at the behest of China and the cynic in me says it was for more easy access to natural resources as well as a perfect market for cheaper Chinese imports.

There is a lot of "infrastructure investment" that boils down into tap lines from the interior mines straight to the export ports.

China has focused substantially on expanding its influence in Africa using Belt & Road so it would not surprise me if your theory was right and this was a way for China to give itself another influence pathway

I'm really surprised African governments are fine letting China do this. It's so obvious what they are doing. They are going to peace out once they give the continent a good fleecing.

It's not really surprising to me. Think how many nations there were colonies of Europeans that brutally exploited them, and then they became independent with a whole range of systemic issues stemming from that colonization.

Now here is China, offering parternships. The African countries aren't dumb or anything, they aren't going into this blind or ignorantly. They know the cost of a developmental partnership with China. The thing is not only are they actually getting tangible and material improvements in their countries in the form of infrastructure and development, the influence it's buying isn't going to Europe and their former colonial owners. Wildly oversimplifying things but this isn't the thread for that.

TLDR: if your former owners and a self-interested third party with no such ties to your country both offer your nation a deal, who would you be more likely to work with based on living memory of your citizens?

there's no rhyme or reason to BRICS; the whole concept was made up as a "wouldn't it be nice" scenario of possible emerging economies by a Goldman Sachs analyst who pretty much selected the countries to fit a pun in the title of his book (Building Better Global Economic BRICs). The fact that some of those countries started seemingly taking this "framework" somewhat seriously is one of the better cases of life imitating art, as a farce in this case. But really there's no BRICS, there's just countries doing normal opportunistic power politics and taking advantage of each other while flying a dumb logo.

Yeah none of the actual population is benefiting from the deals with China, all the work is done by Chinese workers w everything boated in while the profits are split between China and the people who made the deals with them.

Bakhmut became a focus when it was clear that Russia was going to just pour infinite men and materiel into a death zone so Ukraine obliged them while it built up for this counteroffensive. Now Russia's severely depleted for defending against it, hopefully. Who knows how many of Russia's operational and mobile reserve forces are left after the Bakhmut disaster

I'm honestly surprised China didn't step in to help "manage" South Africa's electricity crisis after the Russian power plant dealings between 2016 - 2018 collapsed. 15 years later and the ruling party is starting to realise that the current problems might actually affect their majority at the polls.
