yo i have one of these and since buying it i've learned more about making good coffee, particularly the ol bloom phase. i do not think this can bloom, coffee immediately drips through as soon as any amount of pouring happens.

is this a skill issue or a tool issue?

just don't pour a ton of water in at once. i use one of these when i travel. you basically want to get the grounds completely wet but not have water pouring through to the bottom.

this is what i'm doing - i pour enough in to soak the grounds but the drip starts right away

haha. in that case i'm not sure what to tell you. i'd ordinarily say that perhaps your grind size is a bit coarser than necessary but if you're happy with the flavour you get from it i don't want to ask you to change your setup.

OH YO I NEVER CONSIDERED GRIND SIZE

i mean yeah, i'm happy with the flavour but i'm also sensing that there could be more to it if i got all the pieces in the right place. right now it's on the flour-ey end of fine, but we can always try finer

well. i don't know that this will help. at the end of the day if you've sufficiently wet the grounds, you're largely good to go. just get them wet and let them sit for a minute, perhaps.

all this stuff is personal, there's no real right way to do any of it with the notable caveat that you like what comes out at the end of it.

what are you using to pour? there's no substitute for a gooseneck pot. you think you can just pour carefully from a kettle but you can't. spend the $20 on the goofy looking jug.

it actually sounds like you're grinding too fine already, floury is like an espresso grind and you want something more like sand for pourover. i use #14 on my encore. here's a very detailed page with pictures of different grind sizes https://www.roastycoffee.com/baratza-encore-grind-settings/

my $5 ceramic pourover thing with a dollar store #2 filter makes lovely blooms with about 50ml of water. like it changes colour and continues rising after you've finished pouring. just magic.

i had the same thought when i read flour-y, but i figured if dude likes the flavour, it can't be too overextracted so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i will take any and all suggestions, i'm super open to experimentation with my coffee. i like the flavour but i know i haven't reached perfection yet.

i am indeed using a cheapo gooseneck tho.

SO i think i will try a less fine grind next time
