To preface, I’ve been struggling with dysfunctional alcoholism that deeply compounded severe extant psychiatric symptoms for a decade and change. It was the kind of misery that’s probably abundantly familiar, particularly on these forums. You know, the usual gamut of overpowering despairs - the evident slow crawl of human civilization toward oblivion, the heavy boot of capitalism, angst related to lifelong barely addressed gender dysphoria, the ever present negative feedback loop of substance abuse…all in all, nothing particularly unusual as far as goons are concerned. These factors eventually mounted to the point where, mid September of 2020, I attempted to take my own life.

After years of heavy drinking, my pancreas decided enough was enough and peaced out in 2016, so I became a type one diabetic with abundant access to insulin. I injected myself with everything I had, settled into bed, and waited. eventually I dropped into pitch black and thought I had finally met the end of the life I wasn’t willing to live anymore.

But I didn’t. at some point I was met with a sensation of being infinitesimal, as though I was a single, infinitely dense point in space. I felt a sensation of panic, but it wasn’t mine. I was then gripped by the notion that I was being rebuilt, atom by atom, molecule by molecule, accompanied by both visuals and a sense that I was nowhere and everywhere at once. It felt like this process was being handled by a presence enveloping me, and that whatever it was, it was fundamentally unprepared and pulling a lot of emergency stops to undo what I just did. eventually I found myself in an elaborate environment of strange, almost noneuclidian landmarks through which I could only move through in 2 dimensions (it’s a bit difficult to describe). there were others there, ushering me in a specific direction, and when I reached the intended destination, I came to, completely paralyzed.

I was panicked, obviously, as rudimentary mobility returned very, very gradually, convincing me I was having a stroke. I was living alone with nobody to call to for help other than my dog and cats, who were obviously of substandard assistance. eventually I regained enough of my faculties to work my hands and call 911, and by the time the paramedics arrived I’d recovered enough to stand without falling over. They took my blood sugar, tested me for stroke symptoms and eventually gave me the all clear, leaving me with the very grave assertion that there was no good reason for me to be alive at that point.

To this day I don’t know if I can count that little brush with death a bona fide NDE, since the details differ heavily from most of the other reports posted here. It does, however, dovetail nicely into two separate experiences I had later.

About a year after I nearly took myself off the census, I was deep into another binge when I passed out and had a peculiarly vivid dream.

I found myself in front of what I innately recognized as the demiurge, the malevolent pretender god who tugs the strings of humanity’s fate, garbed in ceremonial Zoroastrian drip for whatever reason. He glared at me and ordered me to submit to his will or suffer eternal consequences. I tried to look away but found my head would not move. He apparently found this so insolent that he shrieked I would be damned then and there, penance officially off the table. I found myself abruptly turning around and marching straight toward the gates of hell, the entire time asking myself with bewilderment “wait, THAT’S god? That petty, vindictive mother fucker? You’re telling me that this entire time, Matt Walsh was RIGHT?!”

The demiurge continued hurling curses at me as I marched forward, until something strange happened: I noticed that I had regained control of my body, his voice was slowly growing quieter, the gates of hell fading into a simmering void of cobalt blue. I felt a sudden urge to look upward, so I did; there I found an entity that is challenging, if not impossible, to put into words, a being with many triangular heads with twice as many eyes, a body of coruscating colors and shifting shapes that never remained in one form for more than a moment, and long, thin, nubile arms covered in some kind of writing I didn’t recognize. I was awestruck.

“There’s still time.” I felt it express to me, rather than heard.

“What?”

“There’s still time.”

and then I woke up.

This is already straining a reasonable word count, so I just want to say that, while all this can easily be chalked up to an unusual vivid, more real than real dream borne of alcohol detoxing, I honestly don’t care. “Real” in the material sense or not, it lit a fire under my rear end and got me to pursue sobriety in earnest. I’m now genuinely happier than I’ve been since roughly 2010, and whatever entity I met in my subconscious made a reprisal during an EMDR session, which has only solidified my conviction that there’s more to the universe than brute rational materialism, that Riot Bimbo et al may be onto something.

anyway, I’m glad I got a lot of that off my chest. thanks for coming to my TED talk.

In all seriousness, even an Earth with apocalyptic ecological collapse is still orders of magnitude more livable than Mars, so I can see that as far as it goes. But getting himself out of reach of the desperate nation-states warring over dwindling supplies of fresh water and the like, is a very real possibility imo.
