Idk if this is the right place to post this so sorry if bad but I need some speedrunner brain help. Ive been really enjoying the gameplay of recent resident evils to the point where i have a desire to try for the cool unlockables and s ranks but i don't know how to go about it. i can do it with the games that have linear chapters where your objectives are simple and the maps straightforward. Efficient encounters, parries, mechanical play, I can handle. It's more the classic style REs i have the problem with. I have the layout somewhat down, but memorizing which pouch and key is where and when for a 3 hr run seems faaar more difficult to me than clutch fast gameplay. I'm struggling with RE2make in particular. Any tips?

the everyman guide above is really solid if you just want that s+ but if you want to actually speedrun it the route for re2r is actually really simple once you get the hang of it. join the discord for if you have any particular questions https://discord.gg/wzcpDDNa , there are lots of videos guides on https://www.speedrun.com/re2remake/guides and mainly what i did was just play along to the world record videos lol

It’s probably a good idea to have notes. When I do runs and realize I forgot something, and have to backtrack or reset or whatever, it just goes in the notes. Keep them on one small page and indicate the game sections clearly so that it’s very easy to review at a glance during a time consuming animation or sequence of cutscenes.

For example when I run Link to the Past I can’t remember for poo poo which places to fly to in what order in the late game. Even after a dozen runs or something. That just goes in the notes.

oh yeah that's a good point. I've run this game 100 times and still forget the puzzle solutions sometimes and in fact was just using this yesterday for the safe combos so you might want it too

Yeah I'm definitely taking notes. Those guides are invaluable, thanks! Id really like to do my "own" run rather than following a video along pausing every 30 seconds, so I'm real grateful for the links!

I always thought GDQ had a rule where you couldn't submit a game that's only been out for a few months, but I guess I was wrong because Pizza Tower is on the schedule and that's good because Pizza Tower owns and was practically made for speedrunning.

They allocate a certain amount of time to recent games each GDQ

WE ARE SMART
It's not a rule from GDQ's side, but sometimes speed communities for new games kind of "decide" not to submit runs if they feel the record's too raw, there's still new strategies being discovered all the time, lots of optimization left to do, etc.

DanielCross
Aug 16, 2013
I imagine you don't want to submit a 30 minute run and then by the time the event rolls around it's been routed/optimized down to 15.

you also don't want like four dozen people all submitting the game because it's brand new

They did previously have that as a rule (iirc 6 months? and the logic was to not spoil the audience, and also runs wouldn't be optimized or have enough history for commentary) but it's been gone for several years now and they've embraced showing off newer games as it brings in viewers.

I'm 99% sure you're thinking of an old LP forum rule, the only rule about GDQ submissions in terms of release timing is that "the game has to actually be out", and has been more or less since the beginning. In ancient times we just used to not get very many 'recent' games for various reasons (ease of capturing being the big one). The second submission period is something we've done a couple times now, for extra flexibility. (But also extra work!)

If I had to think of a good example of a 'recent' game in the early days, Portal 2 comes to mind. Released in April of 2011, run at AGDQ2012.

Retrothon is one of my favourite events since it's always very comfy and features people (and especially games!) you don't usually see run at big events, and the people involved (The RGLtv staff) are some of the nicest ones around. There's a lot of familiar names as well, so if you have time, definitely check it out!

Adding to this - the RGLtv stuff are super nice and this event always draws tons of cool runs and runners.

I will be on my bullshit again for this with G-Saviour and DS9 runs.

Last I saw there were basically no major skips and RNG manipulation is nearly impossible so it's a lot of just optimally playing the game as intended.

You can manipulate it for brief periods (mostly by getting the battle AI in a loop) but yeah there's not really any major shortcuts. You just gotta do the game.

Is there any way to go back and watch Retrothon content we've missed before it goes up on RGLtv's youtube? I've just noticed their channel doesn't have the full-day VODs that I'm used to from GDQs, and I'd love to see some of the stuff I've had to miss.

People were speculating on the RGLtv discord that it might be some kind of update reverted auto-publish to be hidden or something like this and that staff is working on it.

"You just gotta do the game" is honestly one of my favorite forms of speedrunning. It's cool to see a game get dismembered by sequence breaks and glitches and such, but a lot of the time I just want to see someone play basically the same way you would casually, but perfectly. The same impulse as watching a lot of Olympic sports, come to think of it: everyone knows what lifting a big heavy object, so even if you've never done serious weightlifting you can appreciate what's going on when someone manages to get the bar over their head.
