That isn't even the first time Sri Lanka had to do something like that. They are comically in debt to the world because their government purposefully destroyed their economy and have been at the 'rip the copper from the walls' state since 2021. Also reminds me of that bit in Parks and Rec where Andy at model UN trades away all of Finland's assets for every other country's tigers.

If China actually accepts it, that's a great deal for Sri Lanka because I'm pretty sure they have comical levels of surplus monkey. Strategic monkey reserve is full, basically. But how many times can they be slurped?

that headline is misleading because they haven't actually sent the macaques to china and it's not actually china but a company in china. also the macaques are endangered and also part of hindu/buddhist culture there so there's a lot of pushback against this. the government must be desperate

Using an endangered species as currency has got to violate some kind of treaty.
|
# ? Apr 28, 2023 13:37 |
|
CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) is the big umbrella multilateral treaty that governs that sort of thing but like all treaties it's dependent on the member nations actually enacting legislation to effectuate the goals. And that legislation can be "this one time we export a ton of macaques to settle a debt" and the treaty has poo poo to say about it. Not that there's any real enforcement beyond maybe zoos in other nations being less willing to trade them tigers or whatever.

To China hunh. So each macaque would have its sex organs dried,, ground to powder and sold as a premium "aphrodisiac". The rest of it would be sold as meat.

Coinbase has posted their Wells response, in which a lot of details on the interactions they've had with the SEC are revealed. I skimmed through the first half and it is.... not good (for Coinbase) quote:The [SEC] Staff now contends that Coinbase has operated illegally since at least 2018.

In 2021, as her position on regulating crypto eased, she raised at least $175,000 in campaign cash from the industry. Between 2022 and 2023, her campaign has received more than $330,000 from crypto companies and firms with crypto holdings.

They seem to keep coming back to the "but the SEC approved our registration! why are they mad now?" argument. But, thats not how it works. It even says on page 2 of their S1 filing, in bold, "Neither the Securities and Exchange Commission nor any other regulatory body has approved or disapproved of these securities or passed upon the accuracy or adequacy of this prospectus. Any representation to the contrary is a criminal offense."
