Speaking of getting stomped…

MOM drafting update: I have now done three MOM drafts. I have drawn land cards in one single game. My record is 1-9.

I don’t even know what this set is like yet, since the RNG has decided I just don’t get to play anything.

Yes.

I just did the math, the odds of this happening is roughly one in a trillion.

Yeah true randomness and what “feels” random to the average person are very different. It’s a big part of why casinos, gambling in general, etc are so lucrative.

Black summer was the best summer.
As I am playing in person magic again, I am reminded of all the subtle things that only exist in paper magic. For instance, I only seem to run into two types of people who want to trade magic cards.

The first is the type of player who only has bulk cards in their trade binder. Pages upon pages of junk that they want to move but nobody wants to trade for. I can't fault them for wanting to get rid of cards they don't want, but i can fault them for not having awareness nobody wants them either. You would expect this to the younger people and/or the new people but no, its usually the sharky ones in my experience.

Second is the person whose trade binder is full of great stuff, but the catch being that they actually had no intention of trading. Their trade binder is their show off collection and they are there to impress people with their binder and/or waste your time.

I don't even ask people for trades, these people find me.

This is also the person who will insist on +10% value to them in every trade because their stuff is so good. Possibly the most irritating mtg player archetype

Sometimes I feel like this person. Generally a bunch of EDH fodder that has no use to me, but I also don't really know what's popular or desired in casual EDH either, so I generally think "hm, maybe someone would want this?" and toss it in. I usually check prices before putting things in a trade binder so I'm not putting complete bulk in (usually stuff that's 75 cents and up at the time). I'm always surprised when people go through it and find a handful of things they want, but I just kind of feel like that's the point. What means nothing to me might be useful to someone else.

Meanwhile, I've got a nearly full bundle box of bulk rares I haven't really figured out what to do with.

Bulk rares are just penny stocks that randomly explode years later. Unless you just don't have the space to store them, selling bulk rares is not worth it.

:yikes:

Send me all the first type of people. I keep finding myself wanting to tinker with my Commander decks, but there's cards I want that are like 40 cents, but I don't want to buy from an LGS. Stores charge $1 minimum for bulk rares, and that can add up; I don't want to pay $40 for $15 worth of bulk rares, you know? The sharky people want to trade up for higher value cards, but that dream died once everyone got access to online price guides at all times.

I don't trade anymore and haven't since before COVID, but the people I hated trading with the most were the people who'd calculate everything on a TCGPlayer list, and if the trade ended up in my favor by $1, they'd need to look through my binder "for an extra dollar". I never minded making trades where I was down two or three bucks if I was getting cards I wanted. The "loss" of value was more than worth not sitting there scouring a binder to even the trade to the exact penny.

What did you say the strategy was?

Okay so that trade looks pretty good, let me just pull up TCG player to confirm... Oh it's currently 14 cents in your favour. Let me see your binder again ? I'll pull some other stuff out quickly

Khanstant

Most of my trades have been at prereleases or drafts when there's some extra time and it seems pretty casual. People just swapping stuff for things they want without getting all haggle over price value or whatever. Plus some folks who don't really care about the cards outside of drafting.

I have a binder of all my rares worth over a few bucks but haven't brought it out because it's not necessarily stuff I don't want, some are for deck ideas or staples I'll definitely need eventually.

I kind of want to take bulk rares and just use em as options for a handful of kitchen table decks just to have for kicks and quick games, worrying about sleeves and all that. I don't have any just rubberband decks yet really.
