Atheist and Cynic are touring together to celebrate their early 90s material. No idea what Cynic looks like these days (I have also seen the classic lineup play Focus before) but Atheist exclusively playing the original three albums is extremely enticing.

Stoked for this. Plus know one of the guys now playing guitar live for them which is cool. Last time I saw them (when I think they maybe first started playing out again around when Jupiter came out?) the turn out for the chicago area show at pearl room was so low they moved it to the bar next door where I think they just played on the floor in a bar was kinda lovely and was sadly empty. Should be super awesome at Reggies in comparison.

My morning routine for the past few months has been to sit down at my computer toucher desk job, drink my coffee, open this thread, and find a album I've never heard by a band I've never heard of to listen to. Rarely disappoints. I've discovered so many good bands thanks to this thread.

this is a monster loving debut, holy poo poo. taking a lot of influence from cynic - fretless bass, synth work, prog feel - and some gorguts-esque dissonance and song structure with some doom metal to make it even weirder. one of those spins that starts out more straightforward then takes you on a fuckin journey.

the final track, where they lean a little more into the doom/synth/chanting, is definitely the highlight of the ep, but i've also got to point out that the lead guitar work across the entire record is some of the craziest shred i've heard in a while.

i hope they end up putting out a full album

Fires in the Distance is extremely my kind of poo poo. The vocals could be more expressive, but overall I'm happy with melodeath with some doomy parts and lots of great melodies. Idiopathic Despair is a great album closer https://firesinthedistance.com/track/idiopathic-despair

e: In this part from 4:40 on, they do some really fun stuff with the guitar sound. It somewhat reminds me of Alkymist's Draugr, even though they aren't that similar.

Dunno if you made it but was pretty good. Reggie’s being Reggie’s the sound wasn’t great for Khemmis or Conjuror either, something with the vocal mixing. But was still pretty loving good nonetheless.

I really want to see that Yob/Cave In/Yakuza show in June but my place is getting renovated and I dunno if I’ll be in town or not. Hoping to make it though cause that’s a loving hell of a lineup.

Also dunno if y’all know these guys but they whip rear end and they kinda stole the show for me:

Oh, these guys!

A *long* time ago, I worked at an indie record shop that had a pretty big metal selection. A guy who had been browsing came up with a Defiled record, *furious* that this band had the same name as his band. "What the gently caress does Japan know about metal anyway?" Insert some racist poo poo I'd rather not repeat.

Then he asked to listen to it at one of our listening stations.

Comes back after about 15 minutes.

"You know what the worst part is?"

"What's that?"

"They're *really loving good*."
