I'm far from an expert but I think it's basically that black's pawns are too far apart for the king to protect them all

I get, like, “three pawn islands, white recoups a pawn and generates counterplay” but then I look at what to actually do and just think “that a pawn’s running.”

anime is not good
had my first win of a completely lost position on time in rapid. i would pat myself on the back for having better time management, but i think my opponent was elderly and playing faster than a grandpa isn't quite as satisfying

I think Ian has the best eyebrow raises and other tics and facial reactions of any chess player I've seen.

Reasons why Ding should win:
- He plays more fun openings
- He never lost a championship against Magnus, and thus can trash-talk him more.
- He stars in the German version of "who is on first"

The chess.com stream is doing their speculations while looking at the computer's evaluation but not the computer's move recommendations. Kinda strange.
Leads to some strange comments, where they know that there is a good move but have problems finding it.

Are players able to talk to their seconds in between rounds? I'm curious if Rapport's gonna be there to tell Ding "you had him until you missed the tactic" and/or confirm the rest of the prep.

So far this is strategically a very clean game from Nepomniachtchi. I don't think Ding's played a particularly good Spanish yet.

Might've missed something but looks like Carlsen played it in games 1 and 3 in the first Carlsen-Anand match.

I actually quite like this. Caruana trying to figure out why the engine evaluation is different from his initial impression is actually really cool. A great insight into the thought process of one of the strongest players ever.

Also speaks to how, in regards to cheating, just being able to know the evaluation of a position is itself a powerful advantage.

I really like it too, they've been doing it for the classical games as well and it seems to result in the commentators going through many more lines in their discussion which ends up with comments about why they do and don't work. There are occasional strange moments but it's also fun when you get a super GM saying "I'd never even consider playing ...Kh8, it can't be right" while it's the top engine move.

I don't think Nepomniachtchi was psychologically ready for this game to continue.

Just a friendly reminder of what it looks like.

We'll do punctuation later.
they have had someone telling them if there's a crazy engine move they've completely missed too, they just aren't looking at it by default. it's been interesting to hear caruana think through the possibilities before that yeah

It was an insanely good call, Nepo had clearly accepted the draw and was mentally ready to go to the blitzes.
