It's not that great, and it has a really bad romance plot - but the animation and direction is some of the best in terms of pure military mecha action, and it teases enough from the rest of the UC timeline to get you interested in the rest of the series, which is all actually better than 0083 so you have something to look forward to. People call it "Top Gundam" because it really is a slice of 80s military fantasy in the same vein as Top Gun and Tom Clancy novels. The only thing stopping it from being right wing polemic is the fact that everyone has to turn into a fascist by the end. The Winner is quite the opener

The whole Farmland Arc is an incredible anti-slavery narrative because it directly confronts the idea of a "good master" head on. Ketil may be a softhearted kind of guy, but at the end of the day he still views the property relations to his slaves as his due, especially when it comes to Arnheid. He's kind to Thorfinn & Einar and gives them an out to buying their freedom, but it's still for purely self-serving and profit-seeking reasons. I finished watching the Princess Principal tv run (same writer as G-Witch) and it's one of the best spy thrillers I've seen. It never even breaks down to the level of cute girls doing cute things, it's straightforward espionage for almost every episode. If you haven't seen it, the premise is that the English won the 100 Years War and have a higher tech industrial revolution thanks to cavorite, which is a material that has anti-grav properties. But because the technology was heightened, so was the immiseration, and the UK has a communist revolution that splits the country into a socialist Commonwealth and the rump state of Albion & its colonies. The cast serves the Commonwealth, and there's even an episode where they turn a laundromat into a co-op. So I've got my fingers crossed that G-Witch is gonna get even more explicitly leftist after what happened in the Earth episode.
