When you have the monopoly or are just the biggest and best manufacturer of a product everyone needs, you're in a position of immense power. See oil, lithium, spice, whatever. And you even even do this with manufactured goods if you're able to vertically integrate.

There's a lot of news coming out since Abe's assassination on his party's link to the Unification Church, and how they helped keep the LDP in power. They provided campaigns volunteers from their members to the LDP, as well as donations to the party. There's interesting bits and pieces coming out in the Japanese news. I would love to know if anyone's written in depth about their links.
