Tesla is going for a "proven in use" safety testing strategy for their FSD AI, which requires 1 billion incident free hours of total operation. At this rate they only need 3 trillion rocket launches to reach that number of accident free hours of operation

That's what's messing me up about the whole thing. Like yeah let's not focus 100% on the launches being successful, we gotta make sure we can reuse them and save a few bucks.

democracy

the word ended up being regarded as self-evidently good and right. No one is now allowed to ask if we're actually up to the task of democratic governance. Or if it's worth the risk of constantly changing things. Because it appears that all we've done is make a system perfectly unable to actually do anything. The only people that have benefited is the rich because the systems inaction, embodied as 'deregulation', has allowed them to indulge in excess.

But he does it so much cheaper than NASA!

the public funds dedicated solely to funding the privatization of space for just this year were as much as the entire Apollo program.

within eyeshot, including the device I’m typing on, I can see 7 devices with computing power that dwarfs the computers used for the Apollo program that put men on the moon.

would have thought that this stuff was, while still full of inherent risks, a solved problem by now.
