Interestingly, this actually happened last week, but received no news coverage. I'm not sure what to make of it, since it's in the preamble of a mostly unrelated (and very boring) resolution encouraging UN/Council of Europe cooperation.

Yup, the Ramstein/KL enclave is in the equivalent of rural West Virginia.

To be fair, it's entirely possible that the equivalent Finnish base will end up somewhere even more isolated. In the preliminary negotiations the American noted that they really like several of the large military training areas in Finland that let you do large-scale troop movements with live fires. Those would be in Lapland in the rear end end of nowhere, there's not even agriculture there.

Actually kind of mind-bogglingly, those unguided balloon bombs did by complete dumb luck manage to cause a power failure at the factory in Washington that was making parts for the Manhattan Project, causing delays in delivery.

Not that it made a difference in the end but god drat

Nope. According to Wikipedia at least, they set off an anti-personnel bomb. They either died instantly or shortly after.

China has persistently acted as a weathervane, so it's pretty clear they're skeptical about Russia's odds. If they thought Russia would hold they'd be sitting the fence more.

Although not voting "yes" after all, I'd imagine that it didn't help the Russia-China relationship that when Xi visited Putin, the only thing they publicly declared to agree on, no nukes to new 3rd parties, was walked back by Putin before the delegation was back to Beijing.

Chinese culture loves being publicly humiliated and all that, so it wouldn't be a surprise if China would drop their sitting on the fence act completely. Not actively helping Ukraine because that would be seen as bowing to US and NATO, but making it a point to refuse help to Russia.

It's unclear. A few weeks ago the papers were reporting that Nato bases in Finland would be unlikely (although with the caveat that every FDF base kinda becomes a de facto Nato base, if you want to get into semantics), but last week when president Niinistö was interviewed by Yle, he didn't elaborate because he didn't want to give details on ongoing negotiations, but said that the Norwegian DCA was kind of the baseline they were going from, and that includes bases I understand.

Reading through that hs.fi article, here are some translated quotes:

HS.fi posted:

Finland already has several different defence co-operation agreements, including the so called "host country agreement" (tr. note: I have no idea what the official translation for this is) with Nato. "The difference is that this is a binding contract between two states, and has a much wider field of application", says Mikael Antell [who is involved in the negotiations on FInland's side].

"The DCA enables, among other things, for troops to enter the country, stay in the county, pre-storage of material and possible infrastructure projects funded by the United States, through funds granted to the Pentagon by the United States Congress", Antell says.

[...]

What could these American investments in Finland be for example?

"It's a bit early to speculate, but theoretically we could be talking about a maintenance hangar for F-35 fighters for instance. In practise something that both countries consider useful together", Antell says.

"The contract defines the spaces and areas, where co-operation would be focused. They are usually military areas and Finnish bases. In practise there could be more than one area, but negotiations are still ongoing."

Accordin to Antell, the United States are not usually going for temporary troop presence in host countries, but instead they might rotate troops in and out in sequences of varying lengths.

Based on this it sounds less like they are building an American base in Finland, and more like they would use US funding to build new facilities on existing Finnish bases and military areas that would improve our compatibility with Nato weapon systems we currently don't operate.

seriously though there's this paywalled article https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/04/26/anthrax-reportedly-infects-russian-troops-in-ukraine/ apparently Ukraine has an ongoing problem with anthrax outbreaks among animals and soil https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5462303/ https://jglobalbiosecurity.com/articles/10.31646/gbio.183

Anthrax is a natural bacteria that is common in the soil of many areas, it's not really much of a threat because it has to get into your lungs via bacterial spores, in an open wound, or into your digestive tract to cause problems. This is normally very hard to do unless you're a mobik and eating dirt out of the trench I guess.

The reporting in ukraine guy said they sent some showing clear signs of infection back to russia and quaratined the rest of the (brigade?) making that stretch of dirt significantly harder to hold. I'd prefer seeing this from elsewhere as well before assuming it's true though.

I had a class once about microbial ecology where the practical project was to design your own growth medium and isolate a strain of soil bacteria. Some guys accidentally isolated anthrax.

That would be a freaky thought, "hey you isolated something that is so toxic to life in general that if it is airborne and is breathed in by most living things, it is a coin flip whether they die."

Its mortality is low-mid 90s if inhalation anthrax is untreated, and if treated aggressively with antibiotics it goes down to around 50%.

The report was that they broke into a huge burial pit for infected cattle. So it was pervasive in fairly large amounts, and just moving the dirt around would aerosolize the spores.
