Oh we weren’t talking about there not being enough food to feed everyone, I think everyone in that group would agree that calories aren’t the issue.

we were talking about the government being too incompetent, corrupt, or both to distribute it without killing a ton of people in the process. which really was the problem during the great cultural revolution too, mao had plenty of grain to feed China, he was just too corrupt to distribute it to people rather than buying nukes with it.

Wasn't the food distribution during COVID lockdowns completely dire?

My mom grew up in China in the 60's and 70's and remembers the government shipping grain to Vietnam while people starved at home.

Literally straight out of Animal Farm. That book is loving prophetic.

Don't hide your authoritarian state-capitalism under the disguise of communism kids. It always turns out the same.

This is probably the most common complaint I've heard from Chinese people now about the government. Especially when food prices were getting wild a little bit back.

I don't got much of an opinion on it, I'm just saying that's probably overall the most common complaint I've heard. I don't think it's bad for one country to help/invest in another country (if that's what's actually happening, which usually isn't. There are almost always a whole lot of strings attached and that I got strong opinions on) but then also I make a decent wage and you perceive those things a whole lot differently when you're not and getting screwed over by the government claiming to be for you.

Before the 20th century you saw famines there were "there's just not enough food" (or more precisely "we can't transport enough food in from outside famine zone logistically"). When exactly this happens changes from place to place - UK and the Netherlands are natural famine free from the 17th century, but continental europe has bad famines up to the 1860s.

Note the word natural. British government policy is plenty capable of causing people to starve, and you get bad harvests with are economically depressing, but you don't get the "there is not enough food to eat" state fairly early on historically speaking, because good maritime links and infrastructure make importing food always an option.

My post wasn't claiming that famines only happen in faux communist states, but that the way China pretends to be about protecting the workers while directly contributing to their misery while gradually transforming into the thing they overthrew is literally the plot of Animal Farm.

well whatever it was xi seems intent on setting the stage to do literally the same thing again. same promises of equality in prosperity, same implementation of neighborhood distribution co-ops, same promises of endless plenty in rationing, same all-powerful assholes in charge of distribution.

strictly speaking it's all marxist insofar as marx espoused a planned economy administrated for a powerful socialist safety net, but i kinda doubt marx would be cool with the seemingly inevitable result of putting the same people at the head of both the means of production and the means of spending. it always results in common people getting hosed eight ways from sunday in ways that make even the pinkertons seem quaint because at least the pinkertons could be opposed by someone deploying the national guard or regular police against them. also they never had loving tanks.

i hope it's different somehow this time but the more i look at it the more i come to think that the only difference between 1960 and 2020 is that the all-powerful rear end in a top hat isn't bald.

Anarchists and the fourth international (trotskyist left). One of Catalonia's major labor unions was anarchist, and then there were, depending on the time, two or three active communist parties as well. Orwell basically ended up with a bunch of strange leftist bedfellows in an alliance of convenience against the Stalinist/third international forces.

No, people now complain about China sending stuff to and supporting other countries while people in China struggle. Much like they probably did in the 70s when China shipped food to other places while people struggled then, too.

A decade ago at Millenium City Park in Kaifeng, I got to cosplay as a groom in a groom-getting skit. I'm not sure if they still do it. The skit went like this: A woman standing on a balcony throws a ball down to a group of men, the man who catches it is pulled into the skit. I caught it and was whisked into the building and they threw some Hanfu on me and fed me the lines, which was a fake marriage ceremony type of thing on the balcony. This was my first trip to China and spoke no Mandarin at that time, so I bungled the lines pretty badly. Fun times!
