They asked to check, I said “I’ll just have to leave it then thanks” and gave them my polling card. I wondered why we were pounced on before we even got in the room.

Voted Labour because the Lib Dems and the local independent party sent leaflets through my door saying it had been taken over by hard-left entryists!

(Actually, decent human beings joined the CLP after 2015 and enough stuck around after corbyn to outnumber the blairites and vote their people in. The local independent party is made up of ex-labour blairite councillors who flounced out of the party when they got deselected for refusing to attend meetings or campaign with members. I have no idea how the CLP has avoided being suspended by central office.)

Edit: At this point it's just fun to vote against someone who called us cultists and stalinists.

RE local elections

I mentioned about a week or so ago how I wrote off to both the Greens and Labour because I was undecided and didn't have enough information.

The Green councillor got back to me with a lengthy email apologizing for the lack of online updates. Apparently they've been more focused on a ground campaign. He was able to answer all my questions and said the local Green Party doea not hold Shahrar Ali's views, which is a positive! He seemed more focused on left leaning green policy rather than a Tory on a bicycle.

Labour did not get back to me at all.

+1 vote to the Green Party!

Yeah I'm honestly a bit disappointed. For some reason the local party is more focused on the Lib Dem candidate who is attempting to run in two or three different constituencies today. Not illegal and attention should be brought to the chancer but when the majority of your focus has been on this one guy who would have probably come third anyway... I mean come on.

I will probably switch back to Labour at the GE but I'm not too happy about it. RLB is my MP and on a personal level I'd rather be represented by her even if she's under the Labour banner than what alternatives there seem to be.

I wish I'd known about the turned away thing.

Didn't see a single other person arriving/in/leaving when I went. Guess the lack of awareness of it even happening and the ID requirements are doing their job! Last time there were big queues. I'll be amazed if turnout gets over 15%.

Options here are Lab/Con/Lib Dem/Green. Was considering the big, hairy, spunking cock and balls option but held my nose and went Lab [insert joke here]. He's a good lad and has done excellent things for the area. Didn't like the aspect of sending a positive message to the party at large but...eh.

If the Lib Dem gets in I can always go and egg her door as she lives on my street (IN MINECRAFT).

"Amused" that the Lib Dems have sent out a shitload of pamphlets where their entire platform is cleaning up litter. Guess what's lining the streets right now!

I assume it wasn't always the case, because at some point there'd be people born in the 1890s postal voting, but do people born 2000-05 just have to spoil the form?

What strikes me about this is that there still needs to be a 15 point shift before even a bare majority is indifferent about the monarchy, and a 25 point shift before abolition is even a respectable topic. Neither is likely to happen in any of our lifetimes barring incident.

Hunt and Braverman among five in cabinet earning thousands as landlords

quote:

The chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, and the home secretary, Suella Braverman, are among five cabinet ministers who earn at least £10,000 a year renting out housing, according to a new snapshot of parliament’s landlords.

In all, 68 Conservative MPs – nearly one in five – are currently landlords, according to research by a campaign group, 38 Degrees, provoking calls for ministers finally to implement a 2019 government promise to reform private renting by scrapping no-fault evictions and improving tenants’ rights.

Hunt has declared he operates seven flats in Southampton, while Braverman, Gillian Keegan, the education secretary, and Lucy Frazer, the culture secretary, all declared one rental property in the latest House of Commons members’ register of financial interests. Alex Chalk, the justice secretary, declared a flat in Shepherd’s Bush and a share in a cottage in Gloucestershire, both producing more than £10,000 a year in income.

The study counted 87 MP landlords – more than 13% of the Commons – of whom 53 claimed rental income from one home and 34 from two or more properties. By contrast, only 4% of the UK population declare income from renting property.

It's phrased as MPs who "claim rental income", it absolutely would not surprise me if most of them have an LLC set up in their spouse's name or some other sort of funny business to prevent them from showing up in these numbers.

I don't know what the stats really look like when you get into the detail, but:

it's my understanding that MPs get a house in London, paid for by the government, to stay in when elected (so they don't have absurd commutes because they represent nowhere-upon-arse-end) and their family gets to move into it too (because they'll be there for months)

Similar to when a company relocates an employee to a branch office in another country and therefore pays for their living arrangements out of company pocket (either by renting a place or just buying a house for them to live in, and for their family too)

So the MP's home house goes empty for a while. It kinda makes sense that they might rent it out, and that would technically male them a landlord. They don't need to on their salaries but I don't see it as unreasonable really.

That having been said, I'm sure many of them are renting out actual second homes or just straight up have rental empires
