Insert some racist poo poo I'd rather not repeat.

Then he asked to listen to it at one of our listening stations.

Comes back after about 15 minutes.

yeah I felt bad knowing about it when clicking but wow his voice is just wrong for it.

I'm stuck in a rut and haven't followed anything new in metal since 2016ish. My most listened to albums lately are oldies but goodies like Entombed - Left Hand Path, Suffocation's Pierced from Within. I'm very familiar with all of the greats from the 80s and 90s. What's the death metal scene like now? A coworker shared the new Liturgy album with me, not sure what I think yet but it has me curious about non-boomer death metal. What's a top album or two from the past 3-5 years?

2023 so far:
Ulthar - Anthronomicon
Nothingness - Supraliminal

2022:
Imperial Triumphant - Spirit of Ecstacy
Anal Stabwound - Reality Drips Into the Mouths of Indifference (zoomer death metal although it is very much modeled after bands like Defeated Sanity)

2021:
I honestly think Cannibal Corpse had the AOTY somehow but beyond that...
Mefitis - Offscourings
Conjureth - Majestic Dissolve

2020:
Ulcerate - Stare Into Death and Be Still
Faceless Burial - Speciation

2019:
Immortal Bird - Thrive on Neglect
Blood Incantation - Hidden History of the Human Race

That covers a pretty broad spectrum of what's going on now. Clearly old school stuff (Conjureth), dissonant skronkiness (Imperial Triumphant, new Ulthar), Gorguts idolizers (Ulcerate, Nothingness), blackened death (Immortal Bird), etc.

There's so much music being produced now that it's almost overwhelming but there's a lot of stand outs. I'm sure I could come up with a dozen that I really love but we'll keep it to a couple since there's already been some good recs and will be more.

God drat right Steel Bearing Hand. Thanks collectively to the thread btw for introducing me to them some time back.

Not straight DM as such but I just revisited In Mourning’s latest, The Bleeding Veil, which I really loved when it released if for nothing else than them continuing to take stabs at the vacant Opeth throne.

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUmAr2u5-ZzhaK93ZtmDfr7mkudWluEM7

Along those lines the latest Katatonia is really good. I’ve always felt a little underwhelmed by them despite their competency because their gloomy shtick can feel a bit one-note but I really liked the latest.

https://youtu.be/_juzo3SvrxM

Also, anyone round here like Haunter? On the discordant/weird/harsh end of the Opeth pool with some more BM and wall of sound kinda stuff going. Truly unique sound which I can rarely say.
