In the San Diego area, KPBS (our local NPR station) is on 89.5FM, which is also the frequency a lot of those FM transmitters use. Always an interesting experience to be stuck on the freeway in rush hour traffic and get to tune into various broadcasts!

Ahh I didn't get the point of it was about 'non-alcoholic beers'.

Here is Australia. We have a 'standard drink' which is 375ml @ 3.5%. Theres a sort of rule of thumb/guideline that the average adult male can have 2 standards in the first hour then 1 every hour after that. (meanwhile an average aussie male adult has had two beers in the time it took to read this post).

I personally know I am going to be under the limit to drive home if I have two beers after work with my co-workers and if pulled over I won't 'blow over' which is 0.05% Blood Alcohol Concentration.

What the hell is 0.5% beer? One standard drink here is 3.5%

Standard beers here (Finland) are 4.5% and they made it legal to sell the 5.5% ones too outside of Alko (state monopoly store), which sucks because I drink neither, I prefer the light beers around 2.8 - 3.5% but it seems their share of the floor space kept getting eaten by the non-alcoholic beers from one end and the new strong beers from the other end. So now I can basically never find my favorite types of beer anymore. The completely non alcoholic just don't taste right and I don't want the buzz or calories from the stronger beers either. I've basically stopped buying beer.

I have tried a few brands and been very surprised. Everybody's game went up at some point when I wasn't paying attention.

The 0.5% thing is pretty funny though because it still means I get carded if I buy one.

That's funny because in Finland the May Day is a big thing and you eat donuts and drink mead. You can make the mead at home using a ready ingredient kit or buy ready mead. The bottled mead has in the case of the bottle that I have in fridge alcohol content of 0.8% and kids drink that. Finnish alcohol law defines an alcoholic drink as something that has over 1.2% ethanol. :finland:

IMO, no.

With the Chinese room, I think it was a decent thought experiment but fundamentally it is mostly the same thing as just a regular machine intelligence. The whole Chinese room system would be sentient in its whole, but separate from the specific sentience of the guy in the room.

Yeah, it's my go-to if I want a beer but have a reason not to drink a real beer. It should also be noted that Heineken is 0.0, so it's actually alcohol free, not merely "legally non-alcoholic" which is a slight issue with some non-alcoholic beers in certain circumstances. I've also heard Guinness 0.0 is pretty good, but I haven't seen that in Canada yet/ever.

It is because it's for kids and everyone. It has roots in the sobriety movement that was tightly connected with labour movement in the 19th century. We drink other stuff to get intoxicated, or make own and let it ferment longer.

It's not really mead either, it's based on lemons and brown sugar. We always brew our own and just polished off the last bottle. The store bought stuff just isn't any good IMO.

I quit drinking months back and even my small bar can get Heineken, Stella, guiness, and occasionally the lagunitas ipna. They're all way loving better than I imagined/remember an NA beer being but 1 or 2 is all it takes to feel full

I also never liked busch light but busch NA is pretty loving good as an ice-cold drink with a burger and fries and they're way cheaper/less filling

Athletic Brewing Company's IPA (65 calories, under 0.5% alcohol) is really decent.

The winner of the "how did they do this" beer taste thing is Hop Tea Black Tea. It tastes like an IPA, consists of hops, tea, water, and citric acid, and has 0 calories and 0 alcohol.

It's actually pretty easy to emulate the taste of an IPA with zero calories. You just have to take a dish rag that still has some soap on it and squeeze it into a cup of piss, any random piss will do.

It should come as little surprise that pretty much every non-sweet, non-alcoholic beverage category has seen growth and development. People are increasingly trying to avoid or reduce alcohol, and -- I'm sorry -- drinking a Coke with a nice meal is not pleasant, it's like drinking candy and the flavours don't go well with a lot of food.

7-Up and Sprite are better than darker pop like Coke and Dr. Pepper and goes with more food, but that's a low bar to clear.

I found out the other day that it’s not an uncommon thing for MLB players using chewing tobacco during a game to just throw up on the field in the middle of play and then they just go “okay I’m all good now” and keep playing.
