Bucky's avatar is scaring me.

And everytime I see King Charles I can't not look at his sausage fingers, they weirdly call to the eye. I know his Mom lived for ages, but I can't imagine even with top medical science he's going to last another 10 years.

Abdication is arguably the thing that hosed it all up. It’s been downhill ever since Edward hosed off. His mum made it absolutely clear that abdicating is the one thing you can’t do in the eyes of god, that’s why she never let go

On the other hand it did avoid the problem of a pro-Nazi King, so there is that

I'm not wild about it either but I've had too many bans to bother fixing it, sorry. I stand by the text, I don't even know if whoever bought it meant it to be an insult. And there are definitely worse pics of Jimmy, so hey.

And maybe The Crown was too sympathetic to him but I'm still disappointed in how lovely Charles was through the whole thing. It was just embarrassing for everyone.

Yeah downhill for the monarchy I mean. Kind of interesting to wonder what the world would have been like without Elizabeth's reign.

fake edit - but having read a bit more about it the abdication wasn't really as much of a disruption as I thought, unless Edward managed to have kids. But Albert / George VI really wasn't keen on the job and I think that flowed through to Liz too, leading to the general level of apathy we see today.

Skynews is reporting it, so currently I find it hard to believe:

quote:

Sky News can reveal there will be an increase in the JobSeeker payment “across the board” of up to $40 a fortnight, according to Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.

Mr Clennell said the increased revenues allow an increase to the JobSeeker payment across the board to be “ratified” in an Expenditure Review Committee meeting.

“I am told the JobSeeker increase could be up to $40 a fortnight,” Mr Clennell said.

Honestly kinda weird that people think Australians are actually bothered about the convicts. Like seriously it's basically a point of national pride if anything but most of the time absolutely no one cares as anything more than a historical quirk.

This is true, but there's also the population that's a factor. Australia only has 26 million people which would make it a small market even if there were more interesting bands from there.

Fun fact is that before Australia the convicts were getting sent to the US.

Mostly because our history education and media tends to gleefully emphasise how comically easy it was to get sentenced to death or transportation in Victorian England, usually amounting to 'stealing a loaf of bread' or 'being poor in an inconvenient place'.

One of my favorite Ross Noble jokes is that if everyone claiming that their convict ancestry was only as a result of stealing bread was true, then Australia is literally a nation founded by angry bakers.

While it is funny that our primary schools always go with the extreme Jean Valjean angle about the convicts, it is actually objectively true that the vast bulk of them were convicted of (what we could consider to be) minor property crimes at a time of mass social upheaval and poverty as the industrial revolution mechanised people's jobs. The actual murderers, rapists etc were just hanged.

If you have beef with promoters or executives it's weird and lovely to take it out on the artists. But there is some good analysis in there.

I like watching Australians rock the poo poo out of the world stage:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVSnr4qtwz0

Although a lot of our biggest acts aren't even really that well-known here, cos they've got their heads down on the international EDM circuit.

I recently learned about Francis Greenway. He was an architect in England. Problem was that England was more or less built, so not much work for an architect. Sydney, on the other hand, lots of work for an architect. And a better climate. But gently caress paying your own way to get over there and find accomodation etc. So he forged some bank notes or something, got convicted and sent to the colony. Even the judge was like "this was a very weird crime, he was definitely going to get caught and it's not clear what the benefit was even supposed to be". He packed his portfolio and showed it to Macquarie as soon as he got off the boat and quickly became the renowned figure he is today. And historians are still like "why on earth did he forge those bank notes, very strange", when it's hilariously obvious. Wonder how many other times that happened.
