Haunter played Fire in the Mountains and the death metal was very welcome amidst the masses of so-so folky bm. The sound guy at their stage didn’t have any hearing protection so it was all drum and bass all weekend.

That being said, would it be a reasonable thing to claim that Tom has one of the best power metal voices?

I am not sure what you mean by that first part! And I love Tom’s voice, but imo Yannis Papadopoulos has the best voice in pm right now.

THE TAIL THAT BURNS TWICE AS BRIGHT...

If I were to say best overall, I'm a shameless Powerwolf stan do I'd go with Atilla/Karsten but Tom is really good.

I just think the guy they picked to replace Tom belongs in more of a Kamelot type band where they do things slower sometimes and generally more seriously than a fast and funny band.

I agree, Atilla is a strong contender and truly a master of his craft. I just saw them live and he sounded just as powerful in person. My personal favorite is of course Tony Kakko, but I under that objectively he may not be the best :)

2023 so far:
Ulthar - Anthronomicon
Nothingness - Supraliminal

2022:
Imperial Triumphant - Spirit of Ecstacy
Anal Stabwound - Reality Drips Into the Mouths of Indifference (zoomer death metal although it is very much modeled after bands like Defeated Sanity)

2021:
I honestly think Cannibal Corpse had the AOTY somehow but beyond that...
Mefitis - Offscourings
Conjureth - Majestic Dissolve

2020:
Ulcerate - Stare Into Death and Be Still
Faceless Burial - Speciation

2019:
Immortal Bird - Thrive on Neglect
Blood Incantation - Hidden History of the Human Race

That covers a pretty broad spectrum of what's going on now. Clearly old school stuff (Conjureth), dissonant skronkiness (Imperial Triumphant, new Ulthar), Gorguts idolizers (Ulcerate, Nothingness), blackened death (Immortal Bird), etc.

thanks, slowly working my way through these. Really like Spectral Voice, Witch Vomit and Ulcerate so far.

Luke-Warm take.

Rust in Peace is barely thrash metal. While heavier, it's not much harder than the Black Album.

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

(I've always kinda hated Dave's voice so I never gave RIP a solid crack. I've given it a few spins over the past few days and I gotta say, aside from a few legitimately amazing riffs...it's pretty drat mid)

Oh boy this hot take is going to blow a lot of people's minds.

In what galaxy is R.I.P the same tempo/speed as the Black album

He just said it’s not much harder, which doesn’t really mean anything as thrash is not a particularly hard subgenre. If RIP is “barely thrash” because it’s not all that heavy then you might as well say the same about basically every Bay Area thrash album.

I like Countdown and have no real opinion on the rest of their work other than its between fine and terrible. Though I certainly wouldn't call Countdown thrash in any sense of the word.

That said I love his voice in certain contexts. It's just so distinctive.

I never chose being a Metallica kid. It chose me.

And now they're all old and obnoxious and its funny in a sad sort of way.

Rust In Peace is Dave's version of a Judas Priest album.

It's OK, it took me until last week or the week before to finally sit down and listen to "Kill em All" start to finish and I now regret the years I didn't have it's thrashy glory in my life.

Obviously love Reign in Blood but IMO Hell Awaits is Slayer's best record. Kill Again is my favorite Slayer song, it just tears through (slays) everything in it path.

Rust in Peace is also easily my favorite Megadeth record, it's perfect from the first note to the end.
