My dad used to work for a private software company, and if some customer from a bumfuck town in the sticks, like Helsinki, needed a software update pronto, he would hop in a taxi (or later his SAAB) with a stack of tapes or discs (not diskettes). Or he'd go without any media and just correct the program by hand.

There's also a congestion problem, and while there is a protocol for priority transfers, it's not really accessible to non-governmental users.

Amazon still does something similar to move around hundreds of petabytes at once, they load a containerised data centre onto a truck and physically drive it around. They call it Snowmobile.

Tapes might be a little bit more robust in a prang than platters, amazingly they seem to have managed to push the latest lto tapes into holding up to 18Tb uncompressed.

Was it them or Google that did it where the truck trailers are actualyl connected directly and moved around and then dock as expanded storage whereever needed?

AWS Snowmobile is a containerized data center(filled with mostly storage arrays and a bit of compute to manage ingest). The container part is done by VertiV (https://www.vertiv.com/en-asia/solutions/prefabricated-data-center/) and is reselled by HPE or Dell, it costs a pretty penny(milion euro range). If you need to start from scratch, doing container modules is cheaper than build your own(OVH attempted to make a container pile as a datacenter but it burned down due to ghetto wiring).

I discovered that a division of Saab, of planes and cars fame, also used to make minicomputers back in the day. I doubt you'll learn much from these unless you speak børk børk børk, but the 70s visuals are relics indeed:

Bonus fun fact!

quote:

After a series of mergers, the name Datasaab became connected with an incident of illegal technology transfer to the Soviet Union in the late 1970s. A 1973 bid for tender for a civilian air traffic control system at the airports in Moscow, Kyiv, and Mineralnye Vody was won by Swedish supplier Stansaab. A contract between Stansaab and Aeroflot was signed in September 1975. However, parts of the delivered system relied on components from the US, for which the Swedes couldn't get the necessary export licenses. So they bought U.S. components, relabeled them and smuggled them to Moscow using Soviet diplomats. Datasaab separated from Saab in 1978 and joined Stansaab in a new company, Datasaab AB. Allegedly the air traffic control system did support the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979. The smuggling operation was uncovered in October 1980, known as "the Datasaab affair" (Datasaabaffären). In early 1981, Datasaab was acquired by Ericsson and became its computing division Ericsson Information Systems. In April 1984 Ericsson was fined US$3.12 million for breach of U.S. export controls, and agreed to pay.

e: Then again Assa Abloy AB is short for August Stenman Stenman August Limited Company L Limited Company Limited Company, where L is short for both Lock Factory and Lock Factory, but in different languages.

ee: And, completely unrelatedly but since this is off-topic already I don't care I'll post it any time I think of it: Yrjö Sakari Yrjö-Koskinen named his son Yrjö Koskinen Yrjö-Koskinen.

I sometimes wonder about my great-grandparents. They got together in NYC back in the 1920s, and had one son who as a toddler. Some years later they moved back to his native Norway, and had their second child, my grandfather. They named him Norman - literally "Norwegian".

Its an Xserve G5, which shipped without a video card, straight from apple. I dont have the original drives for it, so the OS is long gone. How is one supposed to reinstall MacOS on here with no video output? It doesnt have a mode where it can work over serial, does it?

Pretty sure this era does have a serial mode. Also target disk mode or NetBoot. NetBoot of this era is wild and not PXE. It has been a long long time since I have seen one of those.

I would try target mode, install OS X and boot it and ssh in.
