China will give Putin extra resources to keep going just when the West themselves reach agreement to talk. It just makes sense. Putin/Xi are saving Odessa for it.

I feel like I don't even remember the US being this amped up for iraq and afghanistan, everywhere I look it feels crazy. At least iraq had massive protests, even if as protests do they didn't accomplish anything, but now... I don't see any pushback beyond the fringes of the fringe.

Its always been lonely to be an american on the far left, but its never felt quite so lonely. The instantaneous rehabilitation of nazi's and fascists; to be a freak worthy of suspicion for even questioning to normal people what it means when a government will ban communist parties, while not lifting a finger to ban swastika waving fascist groups. Seeing all the self styled good, caring people, cheer at news reports of tearing down monuments to ukranians who died to stop Hitler and the holocust, while things get renamed for capital N Nazis.

Even in the wake of 9/11, as loving off the chain as that was, it didn't feel so suffocating.

I think part of it is that America isn't even directly involved. I hate to use the word "catharsis" to describe the unleashing of an atrocity, but the US worked itself up into a frothing rage after 9/11, and then actually did the thing.

With here, with this proxy war, you get all the frothing rage, but none of the release, so to speak.

Iraq had massive protests once people realised it was a war of aggression based on false pretenses. Only the aforementioned fringes of the fringe considers this invasion as anything other than a defensive war with russia as the aggressor- if you come at it from that angle, it's unsurprising that a meaningful amount of people will find it hard to muster the will to protest against helping what they consider a lovable underdog.

During the Iraqi war it was GOP that pushed for war, their master plan was to control the production of oil at source and forever control the oil commodity price, also put a knife in the geopolitical underbelly of both Russia and China. Not every US domestic interest was connected to the oil interest. Plenty of people were free to protest and there was slogans "no war for oil".

Now the war is being directed by DEM, so the white house has much more influence over the western press, especially the european press. Nobody outside of a few youtubers has spoken against the war. Only non youtuber is amazingly, Trump.

I listen to lot of think tank talks while working. I think full time think tank nowadays don't even want to bring up the topic of NATO eastward expansion and that it was a unwise decision. If you hear a guy talk about it, that guy must be an academic who got invited on the zoom meeting to provide "alternate opinion" and never heard from again. And don't invite Mearsheimer, he is in the dog house.

I dont think you have a good memory. America was extremely loving amped up in the early 2000s and this is nothing close to it.

It's also really obvious why there aren't massive protests in the US over this war, the US isn't directly invading another country. Like why would you think there would be Iraq-level protests in America over this? Oh we're helping "bad people" as if America has never done so before?

US still spending the same amount on Ukraine as they did during the peak of the Afghanistan war annually. And sending actual weapons too. What does it say about the American public? They don't care enough to comment on foreign policy if there is no actual American citizens dying?
