isn't the shiv sena in MH basically dead

yeah so is the BJP. Shinde technically never had to do a legislative vote muster. It's going to be a bloodbath.
Let me rephrase that. The BJP was eating the Shiv Sena's lunch in maharashtra after 2014 and was on it's way to making the shiv sena irrelevant. When the state election rolls around the Shiv Sena basically has a messy split with the BJP and creates a coalition government with the INC-NCP and generally saves lives during covid. Eventually the BJP eats a big bucket of poo poo during things like village council and municipal council elections and is forced to bribe away sections of the Shiva Sena to create a frankenstein coalition government of their own. This only happens because Uddhav Thackeray resigned against the wishes of the INC who recommended he just ignore the entire thing.

So the party cadre is where it was before the splitting. You have a bunch of BJP supporting shiv sena MPs who are living on borrowed time.

I asked before but I don't remember if I got an answer. What the reason for the BJP's absolute stomp in the 2014 general election? Maybe Indian papers were prepared but it caught everyone outside the country by surprise.

Everything post the "2g scam" was used by a clique of ultraliberals who control the media with the help of foreign capitals into electing the most pro business candidate in India - who was of course a gujarati scammer. A bunch of political parties leaving the UPA meant there was vote splitting and the left committing suicide meant that there wasn't going to be a left-succ coalition like in 2004. The BJP at the height of it's popularity got like 36% of the vote. By contrast in this election in Karnataka the INC got 44% of the vote.

Kejriwal is an op designed by people who see the american political process and think it is the ideal for a country like India.

As an aside the BJP ran an epic religionbaiting campaign this time and stumbled in contrast to the platform of "Hey lets have the state protect you against the rapacious capitalist."

Literally all of that is true with the BJP but privatization means even more market shocks with the deficit increasing because of slashed taxes. Its just that the largest press groups in the country belong to the BJP's financial backers so all that is irrelevant and we get poo poo like how modi is doing epic diplomatic Ws like visiting the US. The Computer Toucher and Op Ed writer class in India should be enslaved and rendered into candles.

The Rupee reaching 60 during the UPA2 : "is this the end of the indian middle class who won't be able to afford budget tours through the EU after retirement?"
The Rupee reaching 80 during epic modiraj: "we will use this weaker currency to become le export master. Look at modi's great leadership that lets us export stuff to the EU and make number go up"

The state straight up isn't involved in the latter and the only benefit of this war when it comes to india is people with indian flag emojis in twitter going "India superpower 2030" while people continue to spend less on and less of their stagnating income on food.

yeah anti incumbency was a thing but politically the Left committed the most brutal suicide it could have done at the worst possible moment in India. Prakash Karat really tried to be the Gorby for the Indian left.

As an aside the CPIML - maoist splinter group that mostly brutalizes landlords - is somehow in a coalition with the RJD and INC in Bihar.

you fail to understand just how stupid much of the pan indian middle class is. Socialist states seem to reproduce terminally liberal brained people in their institutions and liberal states reproduce reactionaries.

And yes the idea is really stupid because like what exactly does a state like Kerala have to learn from the AAP. What does a state like Bihar have to learn from the AAP. It's a delhi centric phenomenon that gets foisted upon the rest of the country because the organs of propaganda are mostly in the wider NCR.

pretty good piece on the monopolization of Indian telecom services over the last 30 years. I had never thought of spectrum as a natural resource but of course it is, the extraction and valorization just doesn't happen with mines or drills. Duh doi.

Henry Kissinger remains wrong on China
By Daniel Samet
May 13, 2023 06:00 AM
As he turns 100 later this month, Henry Kissinger is often wrong, but never in doubt — not least on China.

“No” was his defiant response when asked by CBS News’s Ted Koppel during an interview last week whether we are now all the worse for the opening to China that Kissinger pioneered under the Nixon administration. “China’s reentry into the international system would have happened,” Kissinger added with his signature self-assurance.

Why hide behind counterfactuals rather than count the facts? Let’s consider what actually came of Kissinger’s overtures to Beijing those many years ago.

First, the United States recognized China in 1979 at the expense of Taiwan, swapping relations with a pro-American country for relations with an anti-American one. Not a good deal.

Second, bilateral trade rose from $5 billion in 1980 to $691 billion in 2022. In return for cheap stuff, America lost millions of manufacturing jobs and much of the country's defense industrial base — not to mention the trillions of dollars American companies have lost to Chinese intellectual property theft.

Third, the Marxist-Leninist nutjobs in Beijing funneled this money into their campaign to supplant America as the global top dog. They’ve used China’s new wealth not to rise peacefully but to crack down harder on their population, bully their neighbors, and threaten to kick us out of the Indo-Pacific. In just two generations, China built the world’s second-best military. It also is happy to rot our children's minds on TikTok and smuggle fentanyl across our borders to kill 100,000 of us annually. Never before has a great power abetted a foe’s rise so rapidly and so enthusiastically.

Kissinger can argue that the opening to China made sense at the time. Indeed, we capitalized on the Sino-Soviet split to peel the Chinese away from their overlords in Moscow.

But that was a short-term tactical victory. The Soviets' fall had very little to do with China and much more with their own decrepitude and American power. Moreover, today's China is a far greater challenge, controlling a much larger share of global GDP than the Soviets ever did.

Whatever gains we reaped from the opening to China have long been surpassed by its drawbacks. The evidence is in. It was not worth it.

The fallout from Kissinger’s diplomacy is now on arresting display in the Taiwan Strait. There, China is on the verge of invading the country that we hung out to dry. “From that point of view, it’s a very dangerous period,” Kissinger said in the same interview about the looming war between China and Taiwan. He’s right about that. Yet this very dangerous period has its roots in the foreign policy he implemented. When Kissinger was in government, China did not have a prayer of taking over the island. How things have changed.

Contrary to what Kissinger averred, China’s reentry into the international scene was not bound to occur. He, more than anyone, should remember the elemental truth of history that nothing is inevitable. Better to reflect on real consequences instead of imagined ones.

It’s unreasonable to expect such a supremely confident man to become humble as he begins his 11th decade of life. Dare we expect him to acknowledge the opening to China for what it was: a long-term strategic catastrophe?
