The working theory in the "let's archive imgur before they delete everything they can't monetize" thread is that imgur gives so little poo poo about the downstream impact of their actions that they're rate limiting entire ISPs that suspected image scrapers have been using instead of singling out individual IP addresses they suspect of scraping. "Working theory" because obviously they're not explaining themselves to anyone (and most of the tech media coverage is "huhr huhr, there goes some more porn", so it's not like anyone's bothered to ask them), but the long and the short of it is if the thread largely stops working for you, it's because they're trying to punish someone else on your network and they genuinely suck at that part of the gig.

This will keep happening to more people until either someone else comes up with a workable plan B for image hosting (and this is me begging again for any type of useful direction on that, because it's painfully obvious we're not going to be allowed to wait for attachments v2.0) or until the thread breaks for everyone.

tl;dr: imgur is inflicting intentional damage to accessibility. See if a VPN clears it up.

Image hosting sabotage or not, it's still A Sketchy Life for May 12, 1927, and this week we're making jolly fun of the fashion magazine illustrators (which is a little bit outside of my lifting weight, so if you see anything that looks familiar, throw in a note). Fred G. Cooper kicks off the night.

Herb Roth:

For some extracurricular reading, Robert Sherwood reviews Cecil B. DeMille's original version of King of Kings. Sherwood had a woodshed full of axes to grind with DeMille, so it's a remarkable bit of restraint that his main complaint of a mostly admirable production is that DeMille cast the wrong drat guy as Jesus: "(H.B. Warner's) firm, thin-lipped unyielding countenance is wrong to begin with; on top of that, his make-up is atrociously bad. Of course these external defects would be quickly forgotten if his performance glowed with truth and reality; but it fails utterly to do so. Mr. Warner appears at all times to be so terrified of the great character that he has been called upon to portray that he never for one moment relaxes his almost painful rigidity. [...] He is always a nervous, self-conscious actor."

Of course it wouldn't be DeMille without an occasional lapse of taste: "The Resurrection scene, at the finish, is represented in colors, with doves, artificial lilies, etc., so that it resembles nothing more impressive than a badly printed Easter card."

(If any of the above are missing for you, I'm still making daily deposits on the BSS Discord until we get this bullshit sorted out.)

Do markets like these exist outside the Nordics / Europe? It's kind of like what I assume a farmer's market to be. People can rent out stall space on the town square or central marketplace or on a plaza by the harbour or whatever, and then sell whatever the hell they want. You usually get a mixture of people selling handicrafts, farm vegetables, berries and fruits, and medium size businesses selling their goods.

For instance this is a dedicated fish market that happens regularly in my home town.

Here in Melbourne, Australia, there's the Queen Victoria Market, which has big warehouse sheds with stalls in them, plus a building for butchers, seafood, and specialty goods. They also do a seasonal night market in the winter, it's nice.
