I like the wands that kill you by reducing your FPS to single digits and causing you to no longer know what the gently caress is going on. I had an infinite spells run where I came across a wand with always-cast Matter Eater, an add-damage modifier, and that freezing gaze spell on some sort of inaccurate multicast. Every time I clicked, the game ground to a crawl and everything in an almost 180° arc from my wand was immediately deleted from existence. This whipped supreme rear end until I came across something that didn't give a gently caress about freezing and had enough health to tank the first couple of blasts, at which point I was already dead by the time the computer stopped screaming and my FPS recovered

the outcome of any sufficiently powerful wand can be placed in any or all of three buckets:

- enemy dies
- game dies
- you die

I recently built one of those terrifyingly powerful wands that could do damage numbers with a dozen digits. One that popped up that message about the gods being afraid. It was great to oneshot everything even if the framerate copped a beating.

Then I went to see Mecha Kolmi and discovered that robots laughed at it.

Tentacle with timer, heavy shot, spells to power, homing, divide by 3, omega, spark bolt. Great effect for so few spells but I'll need to add something to hurt mechanicals, plus I like to roll terrain deletion in my main wand to make it easy to get around.

I've been on a string of good runs recently, usually ending up with a good tunneling wand, a good fire-and-forget homing wand and a great burst damage wand with a variety of damage types to deal with anything that gets too close or is resistant in some way.

At that point I start exploring areas that I've never seen before, taking on bosses, etc. I'm talking runs that last hours and usually end up beating a record for items / gold / time / etc.

Every single one of those runs was unceremoniously ended thanks to getting polymorphed and squished by a random weak enemy.

iirc the worm perk doesn’t scare off spiders. I’d say the gold perk is much better because you’ll be able to buy anything you want, up to and including a bunch of perk rerolls.

You’re going to have to learn to deal with steve eventually though. If you don’t have a good enough want to blast him to pieces, try to dodge his fireballs and run away

Off to a great start, found a good poison wand, a digging bolt wand, and an all-seeing eye wand, and I see another wand in an obvious trap room. No problem! I'll digbolt my way into the room from the opposite side, then shoot a bomb at the trap mechanism from a safe distance.

It is one of the acid traps. As I watch acid melt most of the mines and also me, I realize that those traps will shoot their acid wave in all directions that are not obstructed, and that said wave of acid will continue for an unreasonably long distance if it doesn't strike a barrier of some kind. :rip:

Noita detective time. Not often anymore I see an interaction I just don't understand but what happened here?

https://i.imgur.com/DWbm7ld.mp4

Thought I just got knocked into the portal, but I did not go to the mountain. It didn't even load the mountain so I don't think it took me there into a pool of teleportatium that clipped in there or anything (I've been dunked in acid going through a portal before).
No spells like return were used. The wand in hand is just my damage wand. I really didn't want to go into the portal and was jamming up right so maybe it was sheer force of will and I'm an esper.
Okay probably just a bug but who knows?

Homing plasma beam that spawns a new plasma beam on every damage tick.
This can actually be nested further so each of those plasma beams also summons more beams but even if that doesn't crash it will probably take an hour per shot.

The add trigger spell. Relatively rare lategame spell. It didn't use to spawn in normal runs until 1.0.

In this example the spark bolt timer spawns a homing circle of shielding with damage modifiers. As an aside the fireball orbit spells to power combo is an extremely useful one to remember as it activates spells to power with just one wand and no setup.

Every time the shield damages something it shoots off a bouncing burst/triplicate bolt payload. The Mu in the payload picks up the same damage/homing modifiers that were on the shield and applies them to the generated projectile.
So this shield just wanders around and turns into an angry autoturret whenever it contacts anything.

Replace both the shield and other projectiles with plasma beams. The delivery vehicle can be any projectile that hangs around and does damage per tick. static projectiles, anything using pierce if you're feeling brave, or even a lifetime extended lightning bolt, which becomes a piercing projectile because... :science:, and of course omega sawblades.

It is very broken since anything in between the add trigger and the target spell doesn't actually cost mana. With some caveats as greek letters and divides placed in this region will not do anything. outside is fine, eg the Mu doubling up on the free modifiers to apply them to the payload.

There's also add timer and add expiration trigger spells, which in combination can basically be used to create wand art:

Yeah, I'm terrible at late-game wand building. I've got stacks of spells and decent wands but end up with pretty boring builds (although to be fair on this run I have no immunities so I can't get too crazy). Damage is usually only decent once I pile on loads of modifiers, rather than clever use of things. I just now replaced a bunch of multicasts with a pretty simple DunkOrSlam demo build using notes spells, and it seems to wreck most things a lot quicker.

I need to add some other damage types to it so some things don't just shrug it off, but I'm not sure if you can ever build an all round killer when some things heal from certain damage types. Maybe I have to add some weakening curses?

I mean, look at all this stuff (last wand is just for storage). I should be able to get something more going with this. Having said that, I only just made this note spell wand and it kills stuff pretty quickly.

e: oh poo poo - just noticed what I've done with the order of those notes. I'm apologising right now!

That gave me some ideas.

https://i.imgur.com/k7ma4GN.mp4

Need to mess around with it more. Particularly, it doesn't sound as amazing as it would seem like since the game doesn't want to play that many sounds on top of each other, and the notes are pretty finicky in general.
If I get it working better I'll record a version with sound.

For comparison, if you do something like this with triplicate bolts it sounds like an a-10 warthog going off but with the notes it doesn't seem to play back the same way.

piercing + spark bolt w/ trigger = a payload that gets re-cast every frame that it hits an enemy/object, because the trigger activates on collision but piercing prevents it from expiring.

very prone to Fun if you have a long-lived projectile + something tanky or immune to the payload. goodbye frames

The ANSI standard murderwand is:

Spark Bolt w/trigger
Several increase mana/reduce recharge depending what your wand needs to turn it into a machine gun
Damage multipliers (heavy shot is tops, but also increase damage/crit plus)
Quad spell/Pentagon/Hexagon
2-4 Triplicate Bolts
Chainsaw/Lightsaber (to wrap around and make the wand fire every frame)

It murders almost everything near immediately, except for a couple of bosses that are designed to counter that specific wand setup.

But using the same wand every time is kind of a waste of what Noita's all about. Crazy-but-still-effective setups are where the fun (and often the Fun, in the Dwarf Fortress sense) is.

I go back and forth between the homing being on the main shot or the payload. Main shot means more of them land and hit the payload, but I also like having the payload, where all the damage comes from, target everything in the area of effect. Especially given the note spells auto-pierce. I also get annoyed when my main shot homes to something on the other side of a wall when I want to actually shoot the thing in front of me.

Yeah, good point. I only have the full homing for a specialist weapon build as I normally don't like it. But if I have the mana to handle both then that would probably work well.

e: unrelated, but there is something particularly creepy about homing rocks. The way they zip about, thirsting for blood. They make me do that nervous laugh when they go on a rampage.

You should see how Rock behaves when you have the boomerang spells perk :gonk:

I thought I could use my summoned self-homing rocks cleverly with my telekinesis. I was kind of right, but I mostly just owned myself over and over by launching rock-propelled enemies and explosives at myself. Also, I had to wedge all of my rocks behind terrain and carefully tiptoe away anytime I wanted to go anywhere.

Well.

That wand was one-shotting everything so I thought I'd grab 5 orbs and go to NG+. Missing one orb so took portal down to hell, grabbed it and started back up. Got to the lava tunnels and started draining it but got tired of waiting and decided to teleport through the last bit of lava to get out. 1000HP should be fine.
Did that, but then more lava started raining down from the bit above that hadn't spawned in. I panicked, switched to my backpack wand by accident instead of blackholes to dig out through the ceiling and died in the lava.

What a loving idiot. Didn't even Noita myself - this was just amateur hour incompetence.

e: Still got 4 spells yet to unlock. Not looking forward to the tedium of getting Friendly and/or his minions to the avarice diamond.

More patches on the beta branch:

Being able to dump inventory spells at any time is super nice.

No Wand Tinkering's changes make it work on a points system. You start with 0 points, and can edit wands if you have 1 or more:

- In Holy Mountain: +1
- Carrying wand core stone: +1
- Edit Wands Everywhere: +1
- No Wand Tinkering: -1

So the wand core (and presumably other places that enable it one-off) work, and in addition if you're some sort of crazy person and you spawn (or dupe) two Edit Wands Everywhere you can theoretically get it permanently. Not sure if stacking it works like that, though, but at least it's slightly less horrible now
