There were a bunch of these (with maybe an updated front grill/fascia) running around in rural Venezuela when I spent part of the summer there in 2004, but left hand drive — I think Toyota has/had a plant there? They called the little 2 door ones "Machitos". Would be cool to try to import one of those, but I'm sure the current political situation between the US and VE would end up with it being a nightmare.

So IIRC it's in the region of 10% duty compounded with 20% VAT, plus getting it MOT'd and registered, but if it's over ten years old, you shouldn't need the more expensive dedicated IVA process. I think you want it in as a "car" rather than commercial, as I believe the duty on commercials is higher, and as a private individual you wouldn't be able to offset that with a saving on VAT? But that's getting into "ask a specialist" territory.

Curious whether the same import delays are affecting you guys in US / other countries? I've got a JDM import on the way to Australia which I got on Auction in early Feb. It spend 2 months on the docks in Nagoya, before boarding a car carrier. It spent about a week with a day in each port of Japan, boarding and dropping off cargo, before taking a 3 week voyage to Australia, to it's first port... And has sat off the coast of Brisbane for over a month, waiting for a spot to drop of it's cars. It's now been at the next port... For 10 days and counting... With several more ports on the way to my home city. Basically the reason for this is the influx of 'new' car manufacturers (lol BYD/MG) being really lax with their biosecurity, leaving cars in grass fields, and them turning up in Australia with all sorts of bugs and snails on them - meaning out strict quarantine has to work overtime to clean them. It's here! That rack has got to go! Better! When it first arrived and you flipped the AC on it howled awfully. Original 1994 belts baby! Went ahead and did the timing, tensioner and pulley even though it's got 26k on it along with the V belts. An easy, comfortable job. Drained the coolant as well since it looked a little old and changed the oil because ??? for when it was actually changed last, though I doubt it was over on its mileage at all. 5 brand new KO2s are going on it, the spare is exposed on this so you know I've got to have that with the white letters too. Before when I'd order KO2s I'd take the time to make sure whatever size I was ordering had white letters as not all KO2s do, and the white letters are almost the entire reason why I like them so much. This time though: About time that BFGoodrich understands that white letters rule.

Sold the Caldina. It's a great car but between my wife and I we don't need three whole vehicles. Could argue we don't need two Land Cruisers either, but the Caldina made us worse drivers. Everyone was too slow, everyone was in our way. Someone came from the other side of the state and paid a cool $18,000 for it so I'm plenty happy.

It's also Japanese as hell, with lace powered curtains, cigarette lighters in every door and a V12 engine that is so quiet you'd think it was an electric car. I'm pretty enamoured with it so far, particularly as everything works for an older car and the condition is amazing. It's quite a hoot dropping the kids off at school in their own private limo.

There is a guy here in town that has a standard black one that's all rusty. I get why he grabbed it because cool V12 but certainly not the type I'D go for. At least get a not-rusty one, there are enough of those around! Today we sold the green Prado. We thought it was going to be the one we kept but then a better condition one showed up at auction so welp. Now we only have our two Cruisers.

I've got a JDM-adjacent question about kei trucks. I saw a cool early 90's Daihatsu Kei truck with 4wd and a dump bed for 900 bucks on craigslist. It looks like it's been sitting awhile and the owner hasn't started it in years, but other than that it's intact and complete. He doesn't have the title, but he claims to be the second owner and bought the truck for his farm from another farmer. He can give me a bill of sale though. For added fun, I'm in California. Here are my questions: 1. What paperwork would I need to track down/generate to even begin to entertain the thought of registering this thing to drive on roads? 2. Assuming I do find all of the stuff from question 1, what else is involved in the process? All of the stuff I've found on YouTube and online basically just suggest to break the law and wait until a cop pulls you over. I figured that y'all might know better than the randos on reddit. also belated congrats Kaker!

You see this when you find a newer-than-25 years old kei truck driving around, usually with a big orange triangle on the rear end of it. If it's an early 90s, by your estimation, and hasn't ran in years, then if it WERE imported legally and not like a farm truck then it was imported then abandoned really soon. 1998 is what is legal to federally at this very moment, click back 3 years and than makes it 1995. The timeline just doesn't make sense. Plus, the guy doesn't have a title. Did a title really go missing in 5~ years? Why did the truck die? And for so CHEAP too, if it had an exemption in California (something I have seen before, on a Jimny) that thing would be worth $$$$$$$$$$$$$ and the title would have never been lost. Just an incredible amount of bad vibes from the whole thing for it to somehow have a California title that is just missing. If you think you can get one on it even if it DIDN'T have one to begin with, it doesn't work that way. If federally it was imported as a farm vehicle then it stays a farm vehicle, it can not be changed unless you export it and re-import it. This is outside of anything California says, states usually titling things once they've been federally cleared, using the federal process as a baseline with which to grant a state title to a vehicle. There are ways around this, in lovely garbage-rear end states like Florida, but we don't have CARB so will title anything. Even that is much harder to do now and the state actively looks for offenders. The reason why everyone just suggests breaking the law is because that's what you'd have to do. Do that for an AZ-1 registered in Washington, not a daihatsu kei truck. Also, thanks for the congrats. You cannot change the way it was imported originally. 2. California may title a >25yr import with correct paperwork (that you don't have) but in order to comply with ARB emissions requirements, you'd need an independent lab to certify the emissions. That's wildly expensive and might make sense in the GT-R price range, not so much on a discount Hijet.

I've noticed a few USPS rural carriers here drive late 80's Japanese market imports. They're so non-descript you almost don't see them as out of the ordinary. I couldn't even tell you what models they are. Something larger than a kei, but smaller in footprint, and taller than, a 3rd gen Civic. Not vans or station wagons.
