It was liker a weird little ramp up of: "Dolphins and whales are actually really smart!" where it went from just, like, "oh yeah they might be as smart as dogs" to "oh they're like hyper intelligent and might evolve to be smarter than us! Or already are!" The 70's had Flipper. Ramped up a but into the 80's with Star Trek 4 and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Then by the time the 90's hit, we get SeaQuest with the talking dolphin, Ecco the Dolphin, and Lisa Frank using both dolphin AND laser imagery, so again, sort of evoking that "futuristic" theme. And Star Trek TNG had a little Easter egg sort of thing with a "Cetacean Ops" as well, continuing on from Star Trek 4.

Turns out that two of the misleading factors for the public were the relative brain size of cetaceans(it's mostly fat storage) and the claims of kooky scientist Dr Lilly who also believed that the dolphins protect the world from hostile alien psychic intelligences. Go listen to the Dollop episode, it's crazier than you know.

Yeah I guess a lot of it boils down to easy rendering, and I think especially a lot of the early stuff has a strong coder art vibe. You can get a checkerboard by simply XOR'ing one of the bits of each X and Y coordinates together respectively, and the marble pattern thing was something you could easily make using Perlin noise. Quick pic of an easy 286 setup if anyone is looking to get started with some older stuff. Whole setup ran around $150 or so. 286 12mhz Board - https://www.ebay.com/itm/165473396065 - used in routers, needs a 27C512 eeprom burned with the SCAT (C&T Single Chip AT Chipset, awesome name lol) BIOS. Comes with 1mb dram. ($63 shipped) Random Trident ISA card, think this one is a 8900D (~$20ish, it's a 286 anything ISA will work) XTIDE controller with bios ($37) https://texelec.com/product/isa-compactflash-adapter/ OPT390 sound card, nearly any ISA sound card will work this is just what I had. IDE/SD converter card with 512mb SD Card. (~$15) https://www.amazon.com/KOOBOOK-1Pcs-40Pin-Adapter-Drive/dp/B07YFPX7JB/ Random ISA I/O controller, not needed for it to work as it's just there for the floppy. I'm using a monster of an AT power supply but any ATX power supply with a AT>ATX converter ($14, https://www.amazon.com/7-Inch-20-Pin-Button-Converter-Adapter/dp/B075ZPWJBX/) Board seems to run a 20mhz chip fine at 0ws, makes for a pretty snappy 286.

https://www.recalbox.com/recalbox-rgb-dual/ is my favorite recent "retro" purchase not so much because of game emulation (which does look pretty authentic) but because they also made it work with the Kodi player which is giving me nostalgia overload from the good old days of watching divx movies on a hacked xbox I still have my xbox but it struggles with modern codecs, a raspberry pi 4 with that recalbox rgb shield however will happily spit out a 4k movie over scart in glorious 4:3 480i to watch on your old CRT TV. https://i.imgur.com/6vKSBXC.mp4
