Aside from the "America bad" answers some already gave, some people mistakenly associate modern Russia with the USSR and will rabidly defend Russia as a result reflexively due to a love of the USSR. You might think that's really dumb since Putin was part of Yeltzin's inner circle when he officially killed off the last traces of Russian socialism to turn it into a kleptocratic capitalist nightmare country, and you'd be right!

For the most part I have sympathy for the USA Bad! crowd, because the US is bad, a lot of the history students in the US were taught outright falsehoods about life in the USSR and other communist countries, and the last 10 years in US politics have really shown who's in charge and how little they care about its citizens.

Starting around the 2014 black lives matter protests, a lot of discussion started happening around how the US legal and political systems came to be, how unequal they are, and how they are intertwined with the great evil of Capitalism. People started searching for alternative examples of government and capital, and people started discussing the history, polices and accomplishments of socialist and communist countries, and how inevitably the US/Capitalism stamped them down.

Then Trump got elected and a lot of people with leftist politics lost their minds. With the rapid examples of how quickly fascists can take over a country, how powerless US laws were to prevent it, how capitalism enabled it, and the ever increasing threat of climate change started to put fire under the heels of leftists that things needed to change now, and any enemy of the US is an ally to the great cause of ending capitalism.

Where it all falls apart is when you trace the lines back and discover the embellishments and falsehoods pro communist supporters told, how a lot of them were tied to russian media/state in someway, and how they all seem to conveniently ignore that russia and china are now both hyper capitalist and any idea of them being holy meccas for fully automated luxury space communism was thrown out the window decades ago.

So yeah, USA bad, but they're not the ones invading and genociding Ukraine, and the US's support of Ukraine has been vital to their defense. Anyone who argues otherwise has lost their ability to critically think about issues and has drawn the lines that says everyone on this side is bad therefore anything on the opposite side is good.

It's another facet of American Exceptionalism, which is that there's no event in the world we're not allowed to have our hands in or be somehow responsible for. We're too important to not be responsible for this. Other countries having their own histories and wars and issues with fascism? NO, they've all been ruined by Western Expansionism and sanctions. This HAS to be a proxy war between the US and Russia, because we MUST be the main characters, always.

it doesn't help we just had a 20 year war which was unjustified.

This conflict isn't comparable to: the CIA coups in Latin America, or the US invasions of Iraq, or Vietnam; it's not Afghanistan and the Mujahideen vs the USSR, for SO MANY REASONS.

And if people want to laugh at the Ukranians for allying with the US, to mock them saying they're just 'fighting for the privilege to have Blackrock come in' because you hate western-style capitalism - and yes they're kinda into that poo poo right now in Ukraine - I guess go right ahead. Laugh at the people being invaded for not being 'smart enough' to want to be Stalinist communists, who you insist don't realize this is all just for the best if they just let Russia rule them.

It's just more white Americans smugly declaring they know what's best for people halfway across the world, bc it suits their beliefs to feel like the True Intelligentsia who can read between the lines of the newspaper and new articles to see the manufactured consent. We're all just fools who believe normie poo poo to people like that, and there's no arguing with that sort of obsession with feeling important and better than others.

important enough for a doublepost because UKRAINE'S GETTING F-16S timeline for delivery unclear but not for this counteroffensive

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/us-allies-plan-provide-ukrainian-pilots-f-16-fighter-jets-official-say-rcna85270

quote:

HIROSHIMA, Japan — America and its allies plan to provide F-16s to Ukraine — although the fighter jets may not necessarily come directly from the United States — as part of a long-term effort to strengthen the country's security, a senior Biden administration official said Friday.

The timing for when Ukraine will receive the fighter jets — and which countries will provide them — remains unclear, but the official said the planes would not be used for Ukraine's upcoming counteroffensive against Russia. In the coming months, the U.S. and its allies “will decide when to actually provide jets, how many we will provide, and who will provide them,” the official said. The news comes as President Joe Biden on Friday informed leaders of leading industrialized nations that the U.S. will support efforts to train Ukrainian pilots on F-16s.

“Discussions about improving the Ukrainian air force reflect our long-term commitment to Ukraine’s self-defense," the senior administration official said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly called on the U.S. to provide F-16s, but Biden had so far refused the requests. In February, Biden said in an interview with ABC News that U.S. military advice showed that Ukraine did not need F-16s at the time.

“I’m ruling it out for now,” he had said about sending F-16s to Ukraine.

Officials from France and Poland had previously expressed openness to providing Ukraine with the advanced fighter jets. But any transfer of the American-made planes requires permission from the U.S. government.

News of the decision to provide Ukraine with F-16s comes as Biden attends a Group of Seven summit in Japan.

The U.S. and its allies' joint effort to train Ukrainian pilots on the jets could start in the coming weeks, the official said. The training “will take place outside Ukraine at sites in Europe and will require months to complete," the official continued.

Colin Kahl, the Pentagon's top policy official, previously told Congress that training Ukrainian pilots on F-16s could take “about 18 months.” Other U.S. defense officials have said the training could be shortened to only six to nine months based on pilots' previous training and knowledge of fighter aircraft.

In his appearance before the House Armed Services Committee, Kahl said that it could cost up to $11 billion to revitalize Ukraine's military with F-16 jets. G-7 leaders have not announced who would pay to provide Ukraine with the planes.

In March, NBC News reported that two Ukrainian pilots were in the U.S. undergoing an assessment to determine how long it could take to train them to fly attack aircraft, including F-16s. Washington had also approved bringing up to 10 more Ukrainian pilots to the U.S. for further assessment.
