I spent all of my AP CS class watching SEED and SEED Destiny back when Crunchroll was just another free anime streaming site, lol. Anyway take my advice do not watch Gundam SEED or SEED Destiny, they're bad!

As an aside for a 15 year old kid that class ruled, Mr. Doggett did not give a gently caress and was just like "I legit do not care if you goof off in class and use the computers for whatever, it's your grade to tank" and so half the class was completely ignoring the lesson and just playing flash games or watching anime. Half-way through the semester some kid got a USB-portable version of Unreal Tournament and from then on every class just became a LAN party.

Why yes I did fail my AP exam that year, why do you ask?

Yeah, Slayers works really well at mixing action fantasy with broad slapstick. If you find yourself tiring of it a few seasons in, this is perfectly understandable because it is super formulaic but the characters are super engaging and carried me and I stuck with it a lot longer than other shows.

Funimation used to have a ton of anime on Youtube including Slayers but then when the Crunchyroll merger happened they pretty much took it all down -_-

Slayers was the first anime I ever watched subbed,on the International Channel back in the way early 2000s. My friends and I did a Slayers cosplay group in 2014 and it was really funny how many people stopped us, not for pictures, but just to reminisce about Slayers.

One of the best things about the DVD releases was that they had an option for on-screen info boxes explaining all the puns and cultural references. It was really cool and I wish more localisations had this, even though it's a lot of extra effort.

My first contact with anime was weird VHS-tapes my local book shop sold for some reason. They had poo poo like Battle Angel Alita and Devil Hunter Yoko. I would just use my allowance to buy those tapes and then watch them at home.

Alita made me go back and start collecting the manga, while Devil Hunter Yoko made me wonder what drugs the makers had smoked. Though the VHS-tape that was just music videos was good, so I put DHY down as "mixed experience"

The rest of my anime came from, since I didn't know back then how many of the children's shows shown in German TV every Saturday morning were actually anime, too, was the weird poo poo the German TV channel Vox showed around midnight. It ranged from Neon Genesis Evangelion all the way down to MD Geist and actual porn (just heavily censored, since it was German TV). A wild ride for a German teenager.

Another random fact about anime in Germany: The SF-series Captain Future, a co-production between German and Japanese companies, ended up being only shown in full in Japan, because the German side of things refused to show some of the episodes. And yet, Captain Future ended up pure nostalgia cat-nip for people of my generation. Japan probably has forgotten that series even existed,

The first anime I ever saw were Belle and Sebastian, and The Mysterious Cities of Gold, when they first aired on British TV back in the day. I was too young to understand what anime was, relative to the normal cartoons I watched, but I remember thinking those two shows had an art style that was both similar to each other and that I liked.

Aside from some stuff I managed to catch on TV like Pokemon, and the odd dvd I picked up, that was pretty much it for nearly 20 years. It wasn’t until 2005 when I got broadband that I could start torrenting stuff. That was a wild experience getting to binge through a whole bunch of anime I’d read about but never seen. I think Shakugan no Shana was the first show I watched week by week as it aired in Japan, or at least that’s the one that sticks out in my mind.

I don't think I ever really got into the Excel Saga anime, but I did collect a couple dozen volumes of the manga, which has a very different feel to it. Instead of a super wacky parody of then-current anime, it was a still wacky but a bit more grounded satire of Japanese society. I should probably get back into it now that I have a Mangadex account.

I remember they did that with Otaku No Video DVD releases as well. Though it wasn't infobox, they just stopped the anime and put up an information screen. It got kinda tedious after a while tbh.

My first anime experience wa the 4kids dub of Cardcaptors when I was in high school. I tried some other series in HS and college like Cowboy Bebop, DBZ or whatever people would recommend before realizing that there’s other genres of anime and I was seeing the wrong ones. I think the first slice of life show I saw was like the first episode of Spice and Wolf or something, which I’ve still never actually watched all of, but all my tv now is other slice of life stuff. It’s nice having the lowest stakes stuff in the world to put on on a day off to take a nap or whatever. Then sometimes it ends up being excellent like Bocchi, or I really liked Wotakoi too.
