I can't tell if I've gone full Luddite or if I'm just tired of people making believe new emerging technology is something that it's not. We just hired a poo poo ton of people and expanded our team by about 1/3rd. All the new guys are young, childless Zoomers which is causing a weird culture shift with our established Gen X/Millennial group. They're starting to get bored of bitcoin and are now obsessing with ChatGPT, while I'm off in the corner still yelling at thermostats. Maybe if the new stuff of today actually had anywhere near the relevance and impact of the stuff that was solidifying in our time. Oh you have THREE blockchain apes? I mean I'm sure that, at some point, the "AI" middels of now are improved and true AI will be created. But at this moment in time, it's all just marketing bullshit, no smarter than Wolfram Alpha...a product dating back to 2009.

I'm still not convinced that smartphones are a great idea TBH. Seems the intended use case is almost always installing an app that duplicates a website's functionality.

Was helping my dad move from one Samsung phone to the other a couple of weeks ago, searching Google for "Samsung Smart Switch" on an Android device gives the top result as a sponsored link which is an alternate app store hosting what is presumably malware. Google's complete indifference to the user experience of their services is almost without parallel.

As someone that does a small amount of hiring (granted, for a small company with 2-3 candidates for most positions, not many), I'd probably laugh at it and not think anything of it. Then, maybe poke about it during the interview to break the ice

I know HR people reading resumes like to complain about lack of attention to detail with resume and cover letter mistakes, but you send out a million of these things and it's a wonder more of them aren't messed up. Meanwhile, the same HR person will need to send one (1) email and it will be full of errors.

A smart thermostat is the one IOT device that I'm going to defend just because of the sheer amount of customization options you're given. But also lmao at an apartment complex using them because they will totally 100% use it to spy on your usage and possibly take control away from you.

I can let smart thermostats slide simply because nobody seems able to make a programmable thermostat that is easy to configure. I'll pay double just to get a web UI and automatic DST changes.

It was working fine until I had to replace my Wi-Fi and when I connected it to the new system it absolutely refused to record locally. I finally gave in and linked it to my Amazon account but the entire reason I bought that in the first place is because it could record locally. I don't really want to give Amazon hundreds of hours of recordings of my front porch.
