DrBouvenstein posted:And then this fellow. The CADILLAC of VCRs...I imagine: In the mid-90's my wife had saved up her money to buy a nice VCR. Her mom took her to Sears and she picked out a really nice Sharp VHS and a less-nice 22" Toshiba CRT. Her mom added the service plan to her Sears account. She wasn't taking any chances with this $400 vcr. That thing had so many features that I've since forgotten, but the one that always stuck with me was the scroll wheel. At that time i don't think the 3rd button scroll wheel was even standard on computer mice yet, but this vcr had one and it was dope. It made setting a scheduled recording so fast and i think you could also use it to scroll frame by frame when the video was paused. Eventually Sears got tired of fixing this VCR and in the late aughts they offered her a replacement for both the VCR and the TV. Little did she know that a $400 VCR in 1995 was very nice and a $400 VCR in 2008 was a cheap plastic shell filled with raccoons and potting soil. Sears also quietly neglected to transfer the service plan over to the new tv and vcr, which was a nice surprise when the tv broke after 2 years.

Had a Sony SL-2710 until 1993 when I sold my entire Betamax collection to a family in rural Wyoming so I wouldn’t have to haul this thing back home. A fantastic VCR with astonishing picture quality for the time. And so many buttons. Love discrete buttons for control

That beige late 1980s Sony AV aesthetic with tons of buttons that are so satisfying to push still makes me swoon. So stylishly futuristic and utilitarian at the same time, like a control panel from a mecha anime of the period. ...which probably isn't a coincidence, come to think of it.

Watched some laserdiscs tonight, it had been a while. I really miss all of the “…and now our feature presentation” and THX intros and whatnot. The downside being that (in the case of VHS at least) it was coming after a ton of trailers, but just the overall presentation of home video being this amazing novel thing is something I miss. It’s such a normal thing now, who cares to spice it up anymore.

A Plex server loaded with high quality media, skip intros and skip credits buttons is a far superior experience to flipping a disc every 45 minutes or so.

Nothing like renting some b-movie or direct-to-video schlock and seeing a bunch of cheesy trailers for films you've never heard of and will never be able to track down in the early-internet times.

Did anyone ever build a computerized media server that streams strictly from analogue sources? There's got to be all sorts of remote controlled record players with disc changers for example.

Only is you can connect to it via internet and stream the movies from the projector to your phone.

I wanted one of those 500 disc changers, but it's not like I had that many CDs. I found a 200 disc version that does DVD. I guess it could be useful when you want to marathon The Wire or LOTR. Or since it's 200 discs, more likely both along with star wars and the sopranos. I don't think that's even close to 800 hours yet.

You just need to not have the poverty spec players. A few of my LD players have the laser assembly on a rail and will go around the disc to read the bottom side. I've even chucked a webcam into one player for when I was doing LD streams over discord so my viewers could see the action.

The problem I'm running into with my plex server is...well, a 480p rip with stereo sound was fine for me back in 2010 or so, but doesn't cut it anymore. So it's a mishmash of SD and HD sources with varied surround sound. I figure the way around this is to buy 4k discs for the important poo poo. "What's wrong with it?" "It never worked and I waited too long to return it". He decided to spend the $5 and what do you know, it works fine if you actually attach it to an amp. That may have been the same yard sale where he asked "how much is the VCR?" and the guy replied "it's not a VCR, it's a Betamax "

Rev. Bleech_ posted:I grew up in that perfect slot to remember vinyl, appreciate it, yet glad I never have to go back to it. I like vinyl. Not for sound quality, although I enjoy the snaps, pops and crackles, but I just enjoy putting a vinyl on and listening to a record with some concentration. If I listen on a computer I tend to get distracted and pause and look at a video etc. I've been buying one vinyl a month for some time now. It's a nice little treat. One annoying trend is that many new releases are double vinyls, because they apparently have a better sound quality, but that just means more swapping when listening. I can deal with one side swap during an album, but three starts to get annoying.

Lowen SoDium posted:And CDs are superior to vinyl. Yeah, but why bother with a CD? If I want to listen to a perfect recreation of a song, I can just listen to spotify. If I specifically want to listen to just one album, I'd rather put on a record. It's fun to go through the process of getting the record out, putting it on, sitting on my bed and then listening to all the pops and crackles. As opposed to putting a CD in and getting the exact same experience I'd get just listening to it on my computer. Records just make the experience more fun for me. Once decent streaming bitrates came about, there was really no reason to have a CD anymore.
