They should really go a step further and quit the party, then form an independent group of councillors.

There is also this - Labour NEC blocking local parties from entering into coalitions with Lib Dems/Greens:

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/may/21/labour-accused-of-meddling-after-vetoing-local-authority-coalition-plans

quote:

In Lewes, the Greens, who became the biggest party after an election in which the Tories were wiped out, say their plans for an all-party administration involving both the Lib Dems and Labour had reached agreement but was blocked by Labour’s NEC.

Labour councillors in Canterbury, where they are the biggest party, have been allowed to govern with the Lib Dems, but the NEC stopped the participation of the Greens.

They aren't only blocking coalitions with the Greens but I do feel they are the primary target.

The risk the media run with this is that none of these allegations go anywhere. The ministerial code clearly has gently caress all power behind it.

Everyone fixates on Johnson for flagrant breaches of conduct, but he was just the most overt and boorish about it.

I blame Blair. Lying to parliament about WMDs and then facing no consequences, despite huge public outcry, began the unravelling of the gentlemen's agreement that is the UK parliamentary system.

Say what you will about the parties and politicians who came before him, by and large if you were caught loving up you fell on your sword or you were pushed. They felt a need to keep up the pantomime. Blair was the first one to say "nah", and refuse to go. Those who followed him have done the same with decreasing levels of decorum.

Pretty sure I saw a stat once claiming more gaelic speakers lived in Glasgow than the Highlands/Islands combined.

Probably, but you're more likely to meet someone actually speaking Gaelic on Lewis & Uist or in southern Skye

Peeping the statistics there's 1.8mn people in the Glasgow metropolitan area and 700k in the Highlands/Islands. Seems perfectly plausible given not everyone on the Highlands/Islands speaks Gaelic.

There's probably more Gaelic speakers in London than the Highlands, if you take it as referring to the entire Goidelic group. But that's why it's important to specify absolute/relative numbers.

There are three Gaelic-medium primary schools in Glasgow, with one or two more opening in the next couple of years.

T/w abuse situation
About a year before the whole Savile/Yewtree news someone I worked with told me her mum worked as a bunny girl/hostess at the playboy casino in the 70s and somehow wound up in a hotel room with Harris. He apparently locked her in the room and started aggressively demanding sex. She managed to alert a security guard and got away luckily. It wasn't a surprise to me when he was arrested.

If you all get up and yell, it creates a scene but within 30 minutes your are all removed and things continue. If you take turns standing up you can disrupt the entire thing for the whole day.

I know a lot of people slag off social media, but if it wasn't for social media, how much of this stuff (protection of celebrity pervs - and political crookery- by the establishment) would still be going on? (And certainly there is still a lot going on but maybe not much as if we didn't have social media).

It's a double-edged sword. On one hand it does legitimately lead to a voice for the voiceless, and people in power are at least getting some light shined on their behavior. However, on the other hand you do have individuals who have completely lost all sense and appear to believe that because of Saville and Harris that all celebrities in positions of power are secret raging paedos who are leaving cryptic clues for true believers to piece together.*

Despite this, we see very little real action against these abusers if they are able to avoid it. It appears that these extreme cases are the only serious attempts at tackling these issues. I'm specifically thinking about Stanley Johnson admitting he hit his wife with no significant blowback, or that one guy from some flavour of reality show who sold his partner's nudes without her permission putting on a show for the tabloids during his court case.

I want to hope that examples like those will encourage stricter regulations and the enforcement of currently "active" legislation, but there's always *gestures at everything* getting in the way.

* This has more to do with Pizzagate nonsense than the recent discussions around Scofield.

Friends who work in TV/film, around big events or on the edges of politics all have hushed stories about specific celebs and notables being terrible people, which they only ever hint at without naming names after a few drinks. It's clear that people in the industries know who's a creep, but no one ever does anything because you're not going to work again and will rapidly be buried under lawyers if you're the lowly contractor who calls out that a popular actor sexually assaulted you. The way the stories have been told to me, it's not quite expected to happen because that'd be really grim, but it's certainly been painted to me as accepted that there'll be things you can't do anything about unless it's really bad, and even then maybe not.
