Hubbert posted:hey babe wake up Being Dutch, it's always pretty weird for me to see our country -and especially Amsterdam- held up as some sort of perfect Utopia, when I'm here being annoyed at all the cars, people speeding through my neighbourhood, being unable to realistically get to my parents in law's house with public transportation et cetera. But it makes sense since everything is so much worse in the US. The number of huge American pick-up trucks and SUV's is slowly but surely growing here as well, sadly. I keep hoping legislation puts a stop to that sometime soon.

lobster shirt posted:whats bad about it (aside from not achieving the maximalist but correct goal of outlawing cars) theres no national standard so everything is left up to states or individual towns/cities and it's often nonbinding. and it's all or nothing, you barely ever see incremental improvement over time and where you do it's always at a loving glacial pace. in mass the state says you have to put in certain "accomodations" but won't provide the money. sometimes they do but only via matching grants that you get after all the moeny has been spent. every plan gets infinitely watered down by dumb asses that don't have any real stake in the matter. mutcd still overrides it and it's difficult to find traffic engineers that will make plans that do. the end result is that a lot of places simply don't make improvements over time because it takes an incredible amount of political will; it's easier than dealing with the ultra complicated process and can take a decade+ to fix up a single road or intersection due to all the design review processes. plus you have the pigs complaining that a 2 inch bump up is going to impede their ability to speed everywhere and they're often members of town councils and help shoot down plans.

The infrastructure is quite good for bikes though and it at least makes it more possible to live without a car. I heard very mixed things about the Dutch health care system, again not America bad, but not exactly a socialist paradise either.

Real hurthling! posted:are there any tiny countries that went full us style car development and ran out of room cause of the sprawl Not exactly an answer to the question you asked but: I went to Kauai like 11 years ago for a few weeks and I was kind of blown away that given how small the island is, the traffic is loving insane. And that there didn't seem to be a strong bus service presence. And it seemed like there was a lot of new developments going in.

The infrastructure is quite good for bikes though and it at least makes it more possible to live without a car. Dutch stuff review for long-time foreigner living here - Trains are mostly good, sometimes very good, not cheap but not UK-spensive - Other public transport varies - buses in my city are unreliable and weird - Bike infrastructure is great and as normalised as car infrastructure is in every other country. To the point that if they didn't maintain it, normal people (not "CYCLISTS") would be upset - Amsterdam is insane, the rest of the country is much more normal - Health care is fine, but pointlessly ~~choice~~ based so you have to pick an insurance company (who are all obliged to offer the same thing, i.e. comprehensive health care). Silly if you come from the UK, but probably a dream for the US
