I think it's on purpose. Like, if you have a central tenet / unified theory, it can be torn apart. But if it's all like a vague agreement to interpret the signs in your favour, then you can just see any shortcomings as shortcomings 'on your part' but not with the model, and hope that someone else can come up with some bullshit to justify it. It's hard to hit a moving target.

You're not allowed to crumble unless I say so.
Its Pure American Anti-intellectualism.

Which ironically enough had its origins in the Puritans building seminaries. Schools like Yale and Harvard were meant to train new reverends. So that educated minds can still share the teachings of the Bible. It was ‘we don’t need the Old World Ways.’

Then some rural folks decided they didn’t need to go to fancy school to read the Bible - which is a fair point if you live in a small town and don’t have access to a University.

But then soon after many churches were founded by folks that less and less were trained in a seminary. It is very American to straight up hold up a Bible in a pitched tent and have a service.

After a few generations you get folks like now that believe that you don’t need to read the Bible if you can talk directly to Jesus.

And how dare you question anyone that has a personal connection with Jesus.

It’s almost got nothing to do with religion anymore and is simply tribalism.

And the best part is that since - deep down - it’s core is anti-intellectualism so anything that argues against what they believe is automatically assigned as ‘bad/wrong’ to them.

Lol like when you hear a fundy say something like ‘we were Methodist/Catholic/Episcopal but now we are Christian.’

My dumb gently caress relative who believes every single thing they consume online has a new all meat diet. I ask how their poops were since starting. They explained that they take a spoonful of olive oil and a bit of sea salt every morning, which is a lubricant for your tract. I asked how the poops were. They said that science had lied about fats and sugars and we all knew that and now science is lying about fibre and vitamins and so on. You see, if an animal eats vegetables, and you eat the animal, you're getting all the nutrients from the vegetables the animal ate! I asked how the poops were. They said the never felt better!

Like I get it in some remote places. If you're living like 2 hrs from the nearest school than yeah homeschooling might make sense rather than having the kids spend 4hrs a day traveling. Although not sure about the US but in Australia there is distance education set up for that.

Also possibly for kids with particular educational needs and the local schools aren't funded/run well enough to provide it.

Yup. If somebody tells you they were homeschooled in the US (and probably a couple other countries), odds are their parents are lovely fundamentalist christians.

No, they don't have bright colored heads like that, unless there are multiple varieties I haven't seen. I like cicada killers, though, and apparently their generally calm behavior is pretty typical of more solitary species.

Wanna point out there's a dude who was doing research into flat earners years ago and he came to the conclusion that they are aware there is something extremely wrong with society, but don't have the background & education or intellectual tools to figure it out and so dig into the conspiracy theory ecosystem to find an answer.

There's a ton of overlap with qanon & that kinda poo poo -- whichever seems to be getting more results trends to more engagement. When q spooled up a ton of people migrated & when Trump lost a ton migrated back.

The general lack of decent education combined with "drat, poo poo sucks these days" is pretty much an on ramp to these kinds of conspiracies. The conspiracy itself is almost irrelevant, it's the process of correcting it & fixing what's wrong that is the important aspect.

Conspiracies provide a sensible resolution that's more socially acceptable than any alternative, I mean what else are you gonna do, vote and get nothing? Become a succlib style dem is what my parents chose. My aunt went q anon. I went pretend-commie dirtbag when it was too late to go to the monastery. All these are loser decisions that are chosen by people who don't have real options.

Conspiracy neatly squares the circle in a way that's low risk physically and can be low risk emotionally. Some jackass calls you nuts? Duped by the conspiracy. It's intellectually engaging, this is your hobby:

Who could really be shocked to find people getting sucked in? The conspiracy solves a ton of needs, what ideology is more fit for use?
