Looking at it now, it really is disgusting. The flesh is transparent. From the start, I had no idea if it would even make a clapping sound. So I diligently reproduced everything about human hands, the bones, joints, and muscles, and then made them slap each other pretty hard.

Quote-Unquote posted:

It's a very good game and all the components are excellent quality, but it has by far the worst written rules of any game I've ever played. The rulebook is terrible and doesn't contain most of the actual rules, which are instead on various reference cards.

Examples:

There are important setup instructions about difficulty level which don't appear until the final page of the book before the appendix. If you play the game with the default setup, you're playing on the hardest difficulty level and you will almost certainly lose.

The rules for lockpicking, which you will do very early in the game most of the time, are not in the book at all (though it does mention it briefly). This is on a separate reference card.

Once you've played it a couple of times (it can also be very long) it's fine, it is just very annoying getting started for the first time.

Confirming here that the rulebook is absolutely abysmal. Useless as a learning guide, useless as a reference. I only learned how the game's structure really works after watching a few videos. The game isn't really that complex under it all but trying to learn it left such a bad taste in my mouth I never gave it a fair shot.

In other news, the Metal Gear Solid board game is up for preorder at CMON (who seems to have taken over publishing duties after IDW dropped the ball). 100 USD and it comes with a graphic novel and Metal Gear REX figure for preorders. The rulebook is available too, which is nice - some interesting stuff but I worry about running the guard AI getting boring. That said, I'm an absolute sucker for Metal Gear so I probably will pick this up sight unseen.

Thanks for the thoughts. Are there any 3rd party reference sheets worth printing out and having handy while learning if I pick it up? Im usually wary of them til I know the game in case they have errors but if the rules are as badly organized as you say I might give it a shot.

Once you know most of how the game works, the existing reference sheets are good enough. The per-character reference sheets even include build guides and suggestions of what to pick up for first characters, which I really like.

It's just that initial curve of learning can be a bit tricky. Videos can help a lot, I was fortunate in that the person who owned the game had watched the videos a bunch before our first game.

I recommend keeping a copy of the rules open on your phone or another digital device as you play, it's so much easier to find stuff with digital search over flipping back and forth through the book a bunch

Almost no player interaction, but the core puzzle is extremely satisfying. The paladins deck where you choose what you're good at for that turn is extremely slick and gives the game a good arc, and gives games variety. I haven't played it in a while because of the multiplayer-solitaireness but it's real good.

I like Hadrian's Wall better as a complex solo euro. Paladins has a lot of stuff that feels like it should be putting players into conflict but they really don't. Hadrian's doesn't even pretend, and with simultaneous turns and a quick setup it's easier to get to the table. And yeah it has a really simple solo mode that's very good.

I think which one you like more depends on what kind of puzzle you like. Paladins gives you a smaller number of things to manage and is less random, Hadrian's has a much larger amount of stuff to manage and some really fun gambles. Both are worth a look.

I remember ordering the original game eons back and then it got cancelled, so it's nice it got picked back up. The rulebook is definitely not finished though as it doesn't seem to have things like boss battle rules, so I might wait a bit to order this. It's supposed to be full retail this time at least.

I didn't find Hadrian's Wall to be much of a game. The puzzle of how to spend your resources to check the most boxes to combo into more box checks or extra resources didn't hold our attention through a full game. The randomized attacks that you had to prep for felt overly punishing for people that guessed wrong arbitrarily. The guy that taught us was at least halfway through his pad of sheets though, so clearly people like it.

I came here to post this. Unbelievable. 3 years after the project was unceremoniously killed by IDW getting out of the board game biz, after everyone had given up, after I unfollowed the BGG thread one week ago today because it was painful enough what Konami was doing to the franchise, it's brought back from the dead.

I'm not typically a CMON fan (though I try not be a hater either) and I'm not a big fan of licensed games, but Emerson is a great designer so I'm hopeful this project is in good hands.

For recs I'd say look into the classic Uwe games (Agricola, A Feast for Odin, etc), Keyflower*, Dungeon Petz*, and Beyond the Sun. You could also check out Targi for a 2p only WP game. Small box, cheap, but with real depth and a novel WP mechanic.

* No solo modes, but all of the above are great at 2.

Keyflower is surprisingly good at 2 but very very zero-sum. Kind of like 2P Istanbul in that there's next to no margin for error if you're playing against someone of equal skill. Pax Pamir is similar but has a ton of randomness in the form of whatever comes up in that big beautiful deck of bullshit. I have played 99% of AFfO 2P and it's outstanding and one my all-time favourite games. I still suck at it.

Yeah, a lot like FCM at 2. In Keyflower the tile distro will determine how the game usually goes, but it plays so quickly if one player gets shut out you just concede and go again.

It’s not a hard game once you learn it. The core mechanics are pretty simple. Rules suck but it’s not particularly difficult to learn. It’s not harder than Gloomhaven, for instance.

However, each gearlok plays waaaaay different than people expect, so there’s some uptake in understanding character-specific mechanics.
Some are like learning a new game (Stanza, Gasket, Dart, Riffle, Lab Rats). Good news is that you get a radically different experience depending on character (though the base game is fairly straightforward).

I didn't enjoy Too Many Bones too much at all, for the reasons others have said (Gearlocs take a while to learn, rules are an uphill climb, minigames not great), and also because the "battlefield" is very cramped, the graphics and layout overall are mediocre to bad, the writing is mediocre, and the bosses are various kinds of unfair in ways you might not have planned for. The game needed to be revised to a new edition twice just within its first year, and it's still not smooth. It's also not great at 2p.

And yet, the components are strong, the art is great, the abundant dice are the diciest dice, and the game system itself is interesting. There's quite a lot of mechanical content to explore just with the various upgrades and synergies of Gearlocs in the core box, and obviously there are more Gearlocs and more expansions. Some games have a bad expansion or two in the mix and I don't think TMB has had one, just the same flaws throughout that may be dealbreakers or frankly irrelevant for you. It's too bad it's expensive; I think it's hard to know without playing it yourself whether you'll like it. The components you're paying for are a significant part of the experience!

Our 6P game nights with my girlfriend’s family have turned into a regular thing and everyone’s been having fun, which means we get to keep an eye out for new games we think everyone would like! Yesterday we popped into our LFGS running errands and found Ready, Set, Bet! which I’ve heard recommended from one of a Tabletop account I follow on IG, and Long Shot: The Dice Game which I’ve had recommended in this thread before. They’re both the same theme re: horse race betting, but seem to go about it different mechanically. GF thinks her family would love it, so what’s the threads pick between the two?

Also, Regicide has been on my list for a while and I saw a dungeon crawler deck builder thing called One Card Dungeon, anyone have thoughts on that? I’m looking for small footprint 2P deck builders we can take to the beer garden in the park to play together with summer around the corner, and I have no experience with those yet.

The app is essential for RSB, with that aside it's a really fun filler if you aren't allergic to luck, shouting, and juggling chips. I've met a few people who hate the real time sharp elbow gameplay. It's not what they enjoy about boardgames.

Interesting project here to basically make BGG's ranking system more meaningful and better suited for game recommendations. I'll let him explain the system here: https://theperfectboardgame.com/about

First impressions are that I think he is asking a bit too much from the dismembered elements of a game taken separately from the whole, but some of the player profiles the site spat out for me did ring true. The site doesn't have many user reviews to go off of at the moment which is probably a big bottleneck.

Again though I'm not sure how meaningful it really is that I love Codenames, with it's abstract nature, low strategy and complexity requirements, etc. when really all these things basically mean "it is a party game" and it's not like I like every party game. I like this particular party game because of how it's rules, components, table-feel, elegance, etc. come together into a whole.

My wallet is very lucky that Aeon Trespass has, in my opinion, some of the worst graphic design I've ever seen on board and cards. I was thinking of adding yet another campaign I'd never finish to my collection but just watching the let's plays stopped me cold. It's rare that modern games stop a purchase with card art and information presentation that just makes me think I'd never want to use those materials, but man, it's crazy how much cleaner the materials for, say, Frosthaven or Oathsworn are.

Playing a 5/6p game of Oath tonight, and I’m Chancellor with the Banner of the People’s Favour.

It’s our fourth play and the game hasn’t really been a big hit with our group so this could be the last time we play it. I’ve talked about it in here before and it relies heavily on players wanting a narrative for the story, where most of the group is more used to engine building euro games.

Anyway, I’m planning to offer Citizenship to everyone and play the benevolent lord of the land, obsessed with only hoarding wealth, and see how it plays out from there. My encouragement is to get mini alliances and other things happening whilst trying to wriggle myself into an unassailable position.

In the theme of narrative and bargaining I’ll spin some story against our resident AP player to either get some speed out of him or keep him locked out of the game if not.

The comedy of it all is that he owns the game but is least suited to what the game is trying to offer. I’ll report back with the results and whether my friend is speaking to me or not at the end of the night :v:
