China continues to oppress the brave people of Hong Kong

https://www.theage.com.au/world/asia/little-fat-pig-hongkongers-hoped-taiwan-would-be-saviour-now-it-suspects-them-20230524-p5daw5.html

quote:

In Taiwan, Honkongers and other migrants are identified by different numbers from locals on their ID cards. Cantonese is not recognised as an official language, limiting the study credits a student can get. Hongkongers who have worked for Chinese companies are largely disqualified from obtaining work permits on national security grounds. Migrants from Hong Kong cannot be treated as refugees because Taiwan still claims the Chinese mainland and therefore Hong Kong as part of its territory in the constitution.

quote:

Anna Su, who migrated to Taiwan in 2015 after becoming involved in the Free Tibet movement in Hong Kong, says the number of people leaving will grow.

“Because they don’t see any hope of having any development or any future,” she says.
...
There is also a more ominous undertone to some restrictions. “We have to be cautious in giving our help to those people who fled from Hong Kong,” says the DPP’s Lo. “You don’t know whether they are true dissidents or even refugees or Chinese Communist spies.”

Su, who is originally from the mainland and moved to Hong Kong when she was a toddler, claims she has felt the brunt of that rising suspicion first-hand.

“I get called a little fat pig,” she says, slang in Taiwan for a mainland Chinese Communist Party sympathiser.

Maybe Taiwan will be the next Ukraine after all.

I've never been up to there so these ideas are wholly self-invented but:

In Myanmar's case it gives them a supply of foreign currency despite the sanctions, correct? It had been forever since I checked but inflation is crushing the MMK (Myanmar's currency the Kyat). Thais and Chinese alike just flat out love to gamble, who doesn't, and it's just a meager bit of baht and yuan to invest.

Casinos are also hotels, and hotels have travel agencies. It's easier for a Thai businessman to pop on over the border but what about their Chinese partner at the firm? It looks like the visa on arrival scheme was suspended, you can order visas a little easier now online. A travel agency can fill out your forms and bike to the State ministry, cut through all that, while you wait.

Finally, if we're talking pre-Covid and pre-coup, what little tourism industry Myanmar had was mostly Chinese. I'm sure Chinese tourists love the temples and the architecture but they also (used to at least) travel in flocks, big buses with knowledgeable tour guides and affordable group rate packages. Hostels won't do, gotta have amenities.

As far as I understand, the power dynamic between Korean zaibatsu and government is the former owns the later, not the other way around.

Of course Biden wants to drag the asian allies into his tech war with china. Japan literally just announce new semiconductor sanctions that exceed the US required sanction. I have watched a couple analysis that said the Kashida government has lost their mind, because Japan's advantage in mid range lithographic equipment is much easier for China to catch up than the high end ASML equipments. And when china catch up in 3 to 5 years, they will squeeze the Japanese companies out of the industry in payback. What Japan does now is opposite of what ASML and NVidia CEO doing, basically doing interviews rounds an making case to lessen the sanction.

Now back to Biden, why did he say that? Because he can't get Samsung and SK Hynix to cooperate, its simple as that. They have been dragging their feet since the Chip4 thing was announced. Korea under the prev president even said okay we can join the Chip4 but only under the condition of not touching the one china policy, which is a really funny written clause demand for a "technology alliance".

One thing about Japan is that the LDP has effectively never not been in power so they have levers to make things happen. South Korean parties are much weaker. Which is probably a better state of things than your country just being Samsung in a trench coat, but that also means the US can apply pressure on Kishida and then things happen. Though he also seems to be a bit of a loon.

South Korea is probably the most pro-USA and anti-China of all the east asian countries now at this point.

Yeah I meant the attempt on Kishida in April.

I just looked it up and the last update was a few days after saying that he was an unemployed guy who wanted to run for office, but didn't hit the age requirement and held a grudge about that. Not as exciting as the guy who put sunlight on the Abe cult stuff.

Chaebol, not Zaibatsu. The terms aren't interchangable, even if they are both national megacorporations, as the Zaibatsus wish they had the same level of multi-industry dominance and regulatory capture as the chaebols

Anyways I'm pretty sure the US gov also has its own sort of dog leash on the SK gov, by virtue of how operational command of the ROK armed forces is designed to automatically switch to US Forces Korea in any sort of emergency situation

The right wing (the pro Japan, pro US military base, anti NK side of SK politic) actually slowly getting less support. This time they won it with the thinnest margin in general election. Thats why they are not in a position to push any anti Chinese business cooperation policy.

Yoon is also quite inexperience in foreign affair, but Trump didn't do that bad in his term so I don't hold this against Yoon.

Also incredible soapy presidental scandal is part of SK politic, so it will definitely happen to Yoon and his wife.
