Part 97: Episode 4, Day 2, Investigation: The Butz All right, we know what's really needed here. Music: Silence Sound: Realization What about it? Larry's trying to play innocent with us, so let's be direct with him. Say... is this air tank yours? Sound: Stab 2 It's just like the string of flags around your Steel Samurai there. quote:Here's what happens if we're a little less direct: Music: Objection! ...! Sound: Stab M-must be a coincidence! Interesting time for that music. This segment does feel like a cross-examination. L-like elementary schools! A-and used car dealerships! I know this one. Larry already said his compressor was broken. I bet he tried another option and it didn't work out. You used it to inflate that, didn't you? I-inflate what!? What else? That big puffy Steel Samurai! Sound: Realization quote:As annoying as Larry is, I don't think Larry was actually diving around in the lake or really involved with this murder. But let's accuse him of it anyway. !!! Sound: Stab 2 ... Sound: Light Bulb (Looks like I hit the nail on the head.) ... Right... right... Actually, umm... So I tried using the tank to inflate it, just once. And, er, it didn't go so well. I mean, obviously we have to keep pushing here. It "didn't go so well"? Sound: Realization Er, yeah. Do you think you could be a little more specific? C-c'mon... Tell us! Tell us! Sound: Light Bulb ... Fine. quote:I'm not sure why anyone would back off at this point, but just in case: Music: Silence So I took the tank and tried to fill the Samurai up with that. And then... Sound: Weak Gunshot Now there's a familiar sound. Music: The Steel Samurai Sound: Pong Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, Gourdy. And that tank there took off like a rocket. And it took my poor deflated Steel Samurai with it! Sound: Damage 2 It sure scared me out of my gourd, that's for sure. The scene ends rather suddenly, and we're left to go hunting in the talk screen for a new topic instead. Umm... What happened next? Well, all that happened on the 20th or so. (The 20th... a week ago.) So I went out every night in a boat looking for it. And when did you find it? Just the night before last! (The night before last... Music: Silence was the night of the murder!) Sound: Shock 2 Forget that, how are you breaking out new sprites on me 90% of the way through the game? Actually, I was here on the night of the murder. But, you see, I went home before midnight. No... That's too bad... It's not all bad. We've solved one mystery at least. Sound: Realization (Maybe we should go tell her...) There's only one "her" that Phoenix could be referring to there, and it's a pretty big hint at our next destination, even if the player hasn't figured things out by now. Before we go, we can show the tank to Larry one more time to get a recap of what we just learned. See, I tried to use this tank to fill up the Samurai. I was attaching the tank, when it happened! Sound: Weak Gunshot The tank shot up in the air like a rocket... Man, what a sight that was. Sound: Pong Me too. Sound: Pong I checked everywhere else just in case, but there's really nothing left to do but go back and give Lotta the news. Music: Happy People Presenting the air tank still doesn't do anything. The key here is this "Gourdy" topic that has stayed unchecked this whole time. Well, Mister Lawyer? I've got the info y'all need! Oh good, more meaningless choices. I'm pretty sure either of these last two will work here. Huh? Gourdy? Oh, we found him already. Music: Silence Sound: Light Bulb Y-y'all for real!? Gourdy really exists!? Sound: Whack Wait! Better than a photo, even... Of course I have proof. No fair, Nick! Sound: Realization It was when I went to the bathroom, wasn't it!? Enough jabbering already, let's see your proof! Now is the time to present the air tank. Sound: Realization quote:What if we backed off and said we didn't have any proof? quote:Getting the proof wrong is possible, I suppose. quote:Back on the original choice, saying we don't have anything yet goes nowhere, as expected. quote:Finally, there's a whole other branch for instead saying that Gourdy doesn't exist. Music: Objection! Sound: Light Bulb This... is Gourdy. Sound: Pong Umm... scuze me? There's a stand near here... a hotdog stand. About a week ago, an idiot, who happens to be a friend of mine, tried to fill it. Apparently, it made a pretty loud "bang" when it flew... Sound: Weak Gunshot Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Dump The tank, along with the still deflated Samurai fell into the lake. At the same time... Music: Silence Sound: Photo Snap This photo! Wait... Sound: Realization So... you're saying that Gourdy... Sound: Stab 2 ... Music: Detention Center - Jailer's Elegy ... I'm sorry, Lotta. Nah, it's okay, you win. Poor Lotta... Finally, give us some real info here! So, tell us this "information" you have. A promise is a promise, I guess... I overheard the cops around here saying something about the witness tomorrow... Sound: Realization Boat rental...? Y'all should go check it out. Thanks, Lotta! We will! Let's get cracking, Nick! Hold on. Sound: Light Bulb Something else? My camera clicked twice, you know. Sound: Realization ...! Well... I figured it wouldn't be much use as evidence, so I kept it to myself. Well, it might not be helpful at all, but... Here, take it. Sound: Select Jingle Lotta you are seriously the worst. I've been wondering about that second photo for months. You had me half-convinced that you just gave one to us and one to the police, and they were both the same. Not only is the first photo of an empty lake - meaning the shot was fired somewhere else - it's actually a full 25 minutes before the other photo! That's an eternity in crime scene time! Bye now. Y'all take care. Music: Silence Lotta fades away, off to pack up her campsite or something. Seems like we're done talking to her either way. ... Poor Lotta... It's all Larry's fault. The legend still lives on, I guess. Sound: Realization Yeah, the legend of Larry, familiar to all who know him for any length of time... Sound: Guilty And there we go, a callback a long time coming. Hmm. With that, we're off to the boat rental shop again, hopefully to find something actually related to the case this time! Hey, Nick! You're right. Doesn't seem to be anyone around at all. Well, let's go check it out anyway! Apparently the shack was accessible the whole time, we just needed an excuse to bust in. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but a parrot wasn't it. Sound: Shock 2

Part 98: Episode 4, Day 2, Investigation: The Caretaker You know, I didn't really think this game would be pulling out jump scares this late in the action, and that one got me last time. Watching this old man bob back and forth is oddly soothing after that sudden introduction. Eeek! Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Guilty Where have you two been! I've been worried sick. ... Good news for us, the star witness for tomorrow has dementia or something. Karma's going to have fun getting useful testimony out of him. Crossing him, however, is also going to be a nightmare.... Uh, I think I'll leave this one up to you, Maya. Meg! Sound: Shock 2 Y-yes!? Sound: Light Bulb M-my mind? Sound: Realization Sound: Guilty P-pasta? Sound: Realization Sound: Light Bulb You make your old man proud. Music: Marvin Grossberg ~ Old Age, Regret, Retribution Looks like Grossberg's theme music is getting leveraged for all old men. How'm I supposed to keep this place running, an old man like me? N-Nick! What was that!? Sound: Light Bulb A parrot... the one on that perch. Keith! Y-yes!? But I thought Maya was taking over? I mean, Meg? N-Nick? What's the "Wet Noodle"? Um, based on the available evidence, I'd say it's the name of his pasta shop. That's a relief, isn't it, Polly? Ayup... ... With his mission accomplished, the old man falls asleep. He fell asleep... I guess he's relieved. Uh, I guess we'll look around before waking the guy back up to talk to him? Wow, there're lots of various fish in Gourd Lake, aren't there! ...? Something's funny, Nick. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy thought he lived on the ocean. Look, a little safe! Hmm... ... It's locked. This TV would qualify as an ancient artifact today. Wow, he has a television in here, too. This fishing pole looks expensive. We've got a lot of one-liners in here today. That's a great idea, we should do that at the office. Sound: Light Bulb And what, talk about murders? Sound: Realization Aw, you're a party pooper, Nick! Sound: Whack I guess that's one way to keep your food warm? Except he's got a fruit bowl on there... Looks like a kitchen unit. It's pretty clean. Why is there a kitchen unit in a boat rental shack? Does he live here? Did it used to be a pasta shack? You're forgetting, Nick... He's running a pasta shop, here! Wow... what an amazing parrot that is. Sound: Light Bulb Good morning! Hello! "..." It ignored me! *Zzzzz* Sound: Gavel Old man wakes up to offer us advice. Yes, his bubble-popping sound effect is the same as the judge's gavel. It's not bad, actually. Just took me ten minutes to figure out. What, you forgot, Meg? You gotta call her name first! Her name? Polly! How ya been!? The caretaker keeps rocking back and forth whenever he's not talking. It's mesmerizing. See? Neat! So the parrot's name is "Polly"! Sound: Select Jingle ...I have no idea how this parrot is supposed to help us later. Too bad all she can say is "hello"... Har har har! Old Polly can say lots of things! ...Did Polly witness the murder? The "secret words"...? Sound: Realization After that introduction, we apparently need to examine the parrot again. Polly! Polly! What's your name? Hee hee! Cute! Sound: Light Bulb (Maya's found a new friend.) This day is big on animal companions. I wonder if talking or presenting evidence will wake this guy up first. I guess we'll start with our badge as usual. *Zzzzz* Sound: Gavel ...! Sound: Realization Music: Silence Y-yes, it is! (I don't believe it!) (This old guy is the first person to recognize my badge!) ... Huh? Ayup... I got you figured out now! Sound: Objection Uhh maybe we made a mistake here. ... Music: Marvin Grossberg ~ Old Age, Regret, Retribution N-Nick! Sound: Light Bulb Umm... sir. No, I'm not Keith. And I'm not Meg, either! ... I just had to capture that fist-shaking animation. Please, help us! ... Sound: Realization Please, mister... Alright, I'll help. What's that? When this case is over and done... Music: Silence Sound: Realization I'm not promising that. I'm 90% sure that the "Wet Noodle" doesn't actually exist anymore. I can't make that promise. ... I-is that any way to treat your old man!? Sound: Damage 2 Uh oh... now he's grumpy. Not to mention he still thinks we're his kids. Music: Marvin Grossberg ~ Old Age, Regret, Retribution (Maybe we should just lie and say we'll run his shop?) quote:Choosing to lie to the old man up front just skips the previous lines and proceeds straight to the next set. However the music doesn't start until a little later in that case. Okay, we promise. Sound: Light Bulb Hey, anything to get this case solved. Also... Who wouldn't want to eat "Phoenix Noodles"? I... guess so. Sound: Swoop 2 quote:If we skipped the earlier lines by promising to take over the pasta shop right away, the music starts back up here. W-wait, didn't I just say... Sound: Stab 2 Sound: Guilty Y-yes!? Now, what was that you wanted to know? Speak up, Polly! Sound: Realization Er... (Now he's talking to the bird again! How do we get him to talk to us!?) Now that he's awake, let's show the badge to him again? You won't be needing that badge to run a pasta shop. Toss it. Uh, um, I think I'll hold on to it if you don't mind. Let's just keep going. ... *Zzzzz* (He fell asleep...) *Zzzzz* Sound: Gavel *mmph* All that for a generic "don't care" reaction. This photo, however... Y-you know something about this, sir!? Sound: Light Bulb Keith. Y-yes? Music: Silence Sound: Realization ... Music: Marvin Grossberg ~ Old Age, Regret, Retribution D-Dad! You know something about this!? Sound: Whack Phoenix is shameless. Yes? Yes!? Sound: Realization Music: Silence Whaaaat!? Sound: Stab 2 Tell us! Tell us what you saw! Sound: Whack Well, I suppose. I feel like we just unlocked a new conversation topic. Music: Marvin Grossberg ~ Old Age, Regret, Retribution You know about Gourdy? Nope. Best reaction yet. The only other thing that this guy will talk about is his parrot. Polly here's my only friend in the world. Isn't that right, Polly? Ayup. quote:We actually get a different reaction to all of our evidence if we haven't shown our badge yet (and thus woken hiim up and agreed to take over the pasta shop). All right, plenty to talk about here. I guess we'll just go in order. quote:After some later experimenting, the first two topics are available initially (and the caretaker just snores a bit and then pops awake if we pick them before waking him up), the third topic is available after examining Polly and learning its name, and the last topic is only available after presenting both our badge and then the enlarged lake photo, in that order. Umm... a pasta shop? My father started it you know. So that makes you two the third generation! Meg... Y-yes! D-dough tossing? Sound: Realization You, too, Keith. Y-yes? P-pasta wrangler? The West? I-isn't pasta from Italy? Meg! Sound: Super Shock Y-yes! Sound: Light Bulb R-right, of course. Everybody knows that. Nick...? Huh? (This old man must know something about the murder...!) (We're not leaving until we find out what that is.) Umm... this is a boat rental shop, right? What're you talking about!? Sound: Whack This here's the palace of pasta, the "Wet Noodle"! All the kids come up and say "Yo dude, we wanna ride in one of your boats!" That's why I keep them boats out there. I'm pretty confused myself. I don't know, I kind of like the thought that kids came up to him looking for boats so he decided to keep some boats around to rent them. Maybe someone pranked the old man by sticking up a boat rental sign outside. But this old man is the witness tomorrow, right? We've got to find some way of getting information out of him! Ack, my memory's gotten worse of late. Everything... important? Hmm, I wonder... Polly! What's the number to the safe!? Sound: Realization Alright! Sound: Light Bulb H-hey! Polly! Watch it, will ya! Sound: Whack (And a criminal mind...) Sound: Light Bulb H-hey! Don't get me involved in your little heist schemes. The safe still has a checkmark, but now that we have the combination, if we examine it again... Look, a little safe! Hmm... ...we get shot down by the old man. Maybe later... ("Later"...?) After everything we've seen so far, I'm not real hopeful that we'll get something useful out of this last topic. Music: Silence (It was after midnight, but okay...) Sound: Weak Gunshot Music: Investigation - Core Then I heard another one. "Bang!" Sound: Weak Gunshot Knowing these two shots actually came 25 minutes apart now, these eyewitness accounts seem pretty lacking on explaining that time gap. But the gun was fired a third time at some point, too.... Sound: Dump We don't see anyone holding a gun in this retelling. Lotta's photo had the shooter on the right, but is it really the same perspective here? I went back and looked, and it appears to be the same perspective (the boat is facing the same way), but the silhouette on the right doesn't look quite the same: Maybe that's just because they're holding a gun in Lotta's photo? Or maybe I'm over-analyzing it? A little while later, this boat comes back. He was mutterin' something to himself, ayup. What did he say? ... Ayup... Music: Silence ... Sound: Whoops ...Ask Polly? Music: Marvin Grossberg ~ Old Age, Regret, Retribution We need to know earlier than that...! The caretaker gave a better witness statement than I was expecting, but it figures that they key detail is missing. Sound: Realization Our reward for getting through both of the last two conversation topics is an extra scene. Little Terry was just here. "Terry"...? He was wearin' this tattered old coat. Got himself some whiskers growing out of his face. (He must be talking about Detective Gumshoe...) Really...? (Somehow I don't think we're going to get much useful information out of this guy.) Maya... maybe we should be leaving. I think you're right. Sound: Light Bulb Huh? Polly! Polly! Have we forgotten something? *squawk* Maya is really crushing the clever interactions with the parrot. Music: Silence Sound: Realization Well that was unexpected.

Yeah, it's not for keeping stuff on the table warm, it's for sticking your legs under the table so you can be cozy toasty. also don't see how the parrot could be connected to DL-6, maybe that's just the name of her favorite kind of cracker?

Karma’s case against Phoenix reminds me of a fable. There is a Tortoise and a Hare who wage a race between them. The Hare is brash, overconfident of his own victory, puts a lot of faith in his speed as a false idol despite obvious flaws. The Tortoise is steady, disciplined, and pulls off a surprise win. Can Phoenix do the same? I don’t know if my analogy works exactly. Karma does seem like he prefers a speedy trial and is very overconfident. Phoenix may not be smart enough to beat him. Maybe this latest witness will take their dementia medication before testifying and say things we currently do not expect. I look forward to finding out in future updates. Blueberry- Is that Megara from Disney’s Hercules? I didn’t know Phoenix had fanfic involving that. My favorite story involving the character is fanfic, a crossover piece called “Turnabout Storm”.

Part 99: Episode 4, Day 2, Investigation: The DL-6 Incident H-huh!? Sound: Light Bulb What did she just say, Nick? One more time, Polly! Sound: Whack So this caretaker is probably the defendant from the DL-6 Incident then? Judging from his state of mind today, I'm not liking him for the current murder. And by video game logic, he probably wasn't really guilty in the DL-6 Incident either. Which means the killer we're hunting is probably behind both murders, and we'll have to solve one to solve the other. Music: Suspense Sound: Shock 2 Hey, mister! I-I mean, Dad! Sound: Whack *Zzzzz* (This is getting weird...) (Who IS this old guy!?) Music: Silence We suddenly transition outside. Because interrogating the old man or the bird about the DL-6 Incident any further just wouldn't make sense. We have to figure out who that old man is. Oh... What? (...) (Who could that old man be...?) Music: Investigation - Core (I think I need to do a little more research on this DL-6 incident...) (Maybe I should ask Detective Gumshoe.) I was a little worried we'd be going straight to trial now, but looks like we have one last chance to dig up a little more information. Our profile for the caretaker is lacking in details. Let's try to correct that. Examining the shed doesn't tell us anything new, but trying to move shows us that we can't enter it anymore. Larry and Maya don't have anything to say about the parrot, and nowhere else we can visit appears to have changed, so let's just go talk to Gumshoe. Sound: Light Bulb ... You don't look so happy. We solved the Gourdy mystery, and figured out that your witness tomorrow is bananas. Actually, we wanted to ask you something... Yeah? Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal We can't just launch straight into our question of course, we have to shoehorn in every appearance of interactivity we can by pressing a button to ask it. But first let's see what training topic our delinquent detective is on to now. That must be one of the detectives. He's mumbling something to himself. "I... I'm not gonna make it..." ... He must be doing image training for dying in action. That's something they train on!? Phoenix probably didn't stuff the actual parrot into his pockets, right? It's some kind of sketch or note or something to reference? Right? The old man at the boat rental shop's parrot. The parrot knew about that "incident"... Sound: Realization DL-6. Music: Silence Wh-what!? Sound: Drama Pound We're treated to a quick flashback, even though this scene literally just happened and there's nothing we could have done in between then and now. *squawk* Sound: Realization H-huh!? Sound: Light Bulb Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal Gumshoe's stuck thinking about that one. I'm pretty sure that old man must have taught her that word... Wait! What if... What if that old man was connected to DL-6? Sound: Realization ... We can also talk about the metal detector, now that we're done using it. (Assuming we're done using it.) Thanks, Detective Gumshoe. This was really helpful. R-really? You seem surprised! It did technically find Gourdy, after all. Let's chat with the detective. You know the boat rental shop down at Gourd Lake? Oh, yeah... The old man who runs it is appearing as a witness in court tomorrow, right? Do you know who that old man is, Detective? ... Actually... I don't. Music: Silence That's why we called Ms. Lotta Hart yesterday. As for who he is... Your Honor, the prosecution calls some unknown old man to the stand! Hmm... sounds suspicious! Sound: Realization Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal Hmm... The first topic wasn't helpful, let's hope for better on the second. Detective Gumshoe, please, help us... H-huh? We need to know about the DL-6 Incident! ...! That was when Edgeworth's father died. What with the references everywhere and all. ... To tell the truth, I don't know much about DL-6 either. For the love of... Edgeworth is his own worst enemy here. He's the first client we've had that is actually a witness and yet we can't get any information out of him. And now apparently he's been stonewalling the police his whole career on this topic, too? So... I'm afraid I can't show them to you, either, pal. What!? Sound: Whack However... Well, I guess I'd consider opening the file up. Once we've gone through both topics and presented the parrot to Gumshoe (and thus the DL-6 connection), we immediately get past this plot wall. This sequence probably makes more sense if we'd presented the parrot last. ... I get ya. Music: Silence Through there is the Station's Records Room. All right! Way to go, Detective Gumshoe! Sound: Light Bulb Okay, Nick! To the Records Room! (I guess it's time we faced Edgeworth's past...) Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal As promised, a new destination awaits us! Music: Silence Is Gumshoe escorting us? Or are we just running amok amongst a bunch of sensitive evidence by ourselves? Wow!!! Sound: Realization Ten years of files and ten years of dust, I guess. Let's find that DL-6 stuff quick! I hope it's really at least fifteen years of files and dust or we're going to be out of luck here. Music: Investigation - Core (We were almost through with fourth grade when he suddenly transferred.) (Because of DL-6...?) Didn't DL-6 happen around the end of December? Does the school system in this game run on calendar years instead of Fall-to-Spring? Sound: Light Bulb O-oh, thanks! I'll go get the right file! While Phoenix was reminiscing, Maya's done all the real work. But let's look around our new environment first. This cabinet is where they keep evidence for current cases. Some of the things are obviously murder weapons. Others are... who knows what. Most of it just looks like random junk. Don't touch that! It's evidence... It looks like there are files inside that glass case. The case is so dusty I can't see what's inside. They must keep important case files in there. The DL-6 Incident isn't important I guess. Maybe it's only really important to us. There are shelves stuffed with case files in the back of the room, too. Forgotten cases, rotting away for eternity... All this dust is getting to me! This place seems like it could get pretty depressing if you think about it too hard. Here are files of collected case reports. There's quite a large volume of reports here. Yeah. It's like a graveyard of police cases. At least we solved that one! We've got Maya cornered in a new environment, let's try showing her our stuff again! Let's just hurry up and read these files! Maya just gives that reaction to everything. Must not have been space on the cartridge for any more throwaway lines. Let's finally find out what the DL-6 Incident was really all about. Well, first I have to get a handle on the main facts... like a summary. Right. Maya disappears into the shelves or something. December 28... 2001. Whoa. I don't think we've ever seen a current year before. The DL-6 Incident happened when the game came out in the real world, and the plot of this game actually happens fifteen years in the future (at the time; it's now seven years in the past I guess). With... nothing futuristic whatsoever, that I can tell? Odd choice to set your game fifteen years in the future but then not take advantage of that setting at all. (So in two days, the case is closed...) You know, Phoenix mentioning the statute of limitations again got me thinking. What if someone killed Hammond now to get someone to look into the DL-6 Incident one last time? (Of course, that's just additional motive for Edgeworth...) What!? Sound: Light Bulb Looks like it. Music: Silence Part of the court building collapsed, and all of the lights went out. Sound: Roar Sound: Realization It looks like we have Edgeworth Junior, Edgeworth Senior, and... the defendant? It took five hours for them to be rescued... Five hours! The survivors...? Sound: Realization One of the three in the elevator had been shot... in the heart. Another locked-room mystery! If you ignore the glaring bullet hole in the elevator door, anyway. And the fact that everyone inside was apparently unconscious... (So Miles Edgeworth was one of the other passengers in that elevator.) Music: Investigation - Core Do you have data on the victim... Edgeworth's father? Yeah, hold on... He had lost that day's case in court, and got in the elevator with his son, Miles. Music: Silence "Miles"...! Sound: Light Bulb Miles Edgeworth, of course. Suddenly I'm very interested in the case he had just lost. Someone angry about it? Yes, yes, we already figured that much out. I guess these topics can get done in any order. Music: Investigation - Core The murder weapon, a pistol, was found in the elevator. The pistol had been fired two times. Well that deepens the mystery. One shot to the heart, just like our current case. And extra shot that's unaccounted for, just like our current case. And a murder weapon left behind... to incriminate someone nearby? Just like our current case? (Huh...! It sounds just like this current case! What's going on here?) I look forward to another mind-blowing reveal in the next day of trial. Got any data on the suspect in there? Hmm... that would be the guy that my mom got arrested. He was a clerk in the court, apparently. Well, then he had to have done it! Hammond... the victim in our case! Right. Oh geez that caretaker wasn't just old, he was actually injured. It's got to be the same guy. Now I have to wonder why Maya's mom thought he was guilty. He lost all memory of being in the elevator. After he was declared innocent, he disappeared. (He may be closer than we think...) Once again, clearing all three topics (in any order) lets us progress with an extra scene. Music: Silence I still don't know what sort of impact the whole thing had on Edgeworth... Nick. Sound: Whack Y-you're right. How about we just take what we think we'll need... Sound: Select Jingle Music: Investigation - Core Right. I went to take a quick look at the court record, and actually found a second new piece of evidence there. But first, the case file: DL-6 Inicident Case File posted:Case Summary More evidence that Yanni Yogi is the caretaker - he named his parrot "Polly", after his dead fiancée. I guess that's how the parrot evidence might come into play later. Without any notice, we also have this photograph: Was the shot fired from outside the elevator? Or was the second shot from inside, to make an air hole for the others trapped in there? Anyway, let's continue. Now, all that's left is the trial tomorrow... I wonder how "Dad" will do testifying in court... Music: Jingle - It Can't End Here Another day of investigation complete. We have a lot of puzzle pieces now, but I'm not really seeing how they all fit together. I've got some guesses but none of them seem like real good ones yet. I guess we'll see what happens at trial!

DKII posted:Didn't DL-6 happen around the end of December? Does the school system in this game run on calendar years instead of Fall-to-Spring? If the Persona franchise has taught me anything, it's that the Japanese school year runs from April to March. Not sure why that is relevant to a game set in California, but somehow it seemed pertinent.

Now, as much as I have championed the translation work of this game (and I still do!), I do find it VERY obvious that it is not natively English with the way that Phoenix refers to 'that' case, as opposed to saying straight out what case it is or alluding to DL-6 in another way. This isn't the only game which uses that particular phrase, and it is (at least to me) such an... Atypical way of saying something in English. Wish I knew what the exact term is in Japanese.

This plot is getting a bit convoluted and confusing in my opinion. Hope they tie everything together at some point.

I can see at least one point of ventilation in the crime photo, even!

Maybe the earthquake blocked the ventilation?

Maybe the building code makers and inspectors in Japanifornia are roughly as competent as the police force

I understand the 'that thing' construction is a way of referring to a thing without being specific as to what it is, that's in Japanese, that's hard to translate into 100% grammatical English without completely rewriting sentences or trailing off. This won't be the last time it shows up in the series.

achtungnight posted:This plot is getting a bit convoluted and confusing in my opinion. Hope they tie everything together at some point. Ah, it can't be that convoluted! Our rival (who has some unspecified relationship to the protagonist) and friend? may have shot someone on a boat in the middle of a lake that had its own loch ness monster show up except that the loch ness monster was actually just an air tank fired off by an airhead and that event brought in a sightseer/conspiracy theorist with a camera who then took an automatic photo of the scene when the gun was fired, but it turns out that there was another gunshot beforehand and also that the gun was fired 3 times, not 2, and all of that lead us to talking to the boat caretaker who has a parrot and who is apparently senile and thinks that phoenix is his kid and wants to run a noodle shop. Also DL-6. No idea what that is, but hey, it exists and is important somehow. Maybe? Who knows. It was a long time ago, after all. Oh and the prosecutor is a prick and is our rival/friend's former mentor who loves to hide evidence, fake evidence (allegedly!), and badger witnesses into not revealing crucial information. So we have that going for us as well.

You say convoluted, but that's about par for the course for an Ace Attorney trial. Or did you forget that Phoenix won his second case through literal divine intervention?

Were the elevator airtight they'd have been dead after what, 10 minutes? But some airflow doesn't mean enough airflow.

Could also have been some panicked hyperventilation I guess.
