Joss can’t write anything that isn’t about a Chosen waif with latent superpowers. Like his entire pre-Marvel career is just rewrites of Buffy. Angel was actually pretty decent especially later on when he was more hands-off and the other writers gave it its own feel.

Angel was cancelled for dumb reasons, and they had to rush to put an ending together for it.

I enjoyed Firefly, knowing nothing about Joss Whedon, I never watched a single episode of those Buffy shows as they looked incredibly lame. Then the Dollhouse show came out and I'm like, oh the Firefly guy made a new show I should check that out. I think I managed like three episodes and it was probably the worst show I'd ever seen and that was the last I cared about old Joss.

I found Dollhouse hard to watch because it felt less like the author's fetishes sneak in every once in a while and more like an author's fetish is the whole premise.

But then if you look past that and just accept the premise, you find that the show is just not good.

Yeah, it definately started before that. I vaguely remember this, first episode was 1987. They released a feature length film a year later, with the tagline "An Indian cowboy with magic powers saves the planet of New Texas from robot monsters." I rented it on VHS and even as a kid I thought it was a bit more violent and risque than usual Saturday morning cartoons. I really need to go look it up again.

It got cancelled because Joss Whedon was going around threatening to do poo poo like this:

quote:

In the Science Channel ten-year reunion special "Firefly: Browncoats Unite," Minear shared Whedon's initial pitch to him:

"[Inara] had this sort of magic syringe. She would take this drug, and if she were, for instance, raped, the rapist would die a horrible death. The story was that she gets kidnapped by Reavers, and when Mal finally got to the ship to save her from the Reavers, he gets on the Reaver ship and all the Reavers are dead. Which would suggest a kind of really bad assault. At the end of the episode, he comes in after she's been horribly brutalized, and he comes in and he gets down on his knee and he takes her hand, and he treats her like a lady. And that's the kind of stuff that we wanted to do."

Honestly though whenever I see someone complaining about Firefly’s cancellation these days I just assume they parrot whatever opinion the internet tells them to have.

I can understand people being upset when it happened but what I can’t understand is why anyone would be so up in arms about this 20 years later and yet you still see it get brought up. I think almost everyone who likes it these days got into it knowing full well it was cancelled anyway.

Its like an Emporer’s New Clothes situation where they all think they’re supposed to love it and be upset that its gone since they want to identify as a nerd.

Didnt read anything past page 1 but just had to say The Expanse loving blows and i watched Season 1 as space detective Miller seemed cool even though his whole obsession was loving dumb as hell, but they zipped up that arc and the rest is just James Holden doing his loving FACE for 9 seasons, having mental breakdowns and crisis of faiths every 10 minutes. And that United nations lady with the voice. She might as well have sat down and read straight from the script and used the first take for all her emotional range. Alex Kamal should've been cancelled as soon as he got on the martian uniform becouse drat he loved being in with the fascists (basically) but also for the sexual allegations yeah.

Firefly was allright i think.

Seems to be more of a nostalgia thing. I saw a Buffy one-man show the other week (it was better than that sounds) and everyone was of a "certain age" and a particular breed of nerd.

Never Forget.
i was in like a board game group for a metropolitan area. And we had an e-mail list to sort of sort out when we would play games and stuff. Anyway, there was a guy whose e-mail signature was basically 3 paragraphs of quotes from Firefly and then sort of a note from him about how it was the greatest show ever made. Whatever. But then one time I was at a competition for this game and I saw someone who had quotes from the opening theme song on his forearms in the same font as the show.

FWIW I liked the show but also found it annoying at times, like the dialogue was a bit forced. But I thought it served as a counterpoint to Star Trek's melodrama (I use that as a technical term, out of love), as an attempt of verisimilitude. I also think the visual effects out kicked their coverage, they were quite good at times. I always liked Jewel Staite's delivery of 'look, look where I'm pointing', which is a weird thing to fixate on, but I use it in real life if I tell someone to 'turn that' and I'm pointing and they look confused. Glad it didn't drag on, though.

I think my wife and I will watch Buffy at some point in the near future.

The shows that have huge fandoms tend to never meet expectations and in the case of Rick and Morty make people want nothing to do with it. People find flaws not because there's anymore than the average show but because they are looking for them.e

Edit: Firefly is alright.

I tried to watch this show a few years ago because I like sci fi and I like Westerns. I remember the most annoying guy in my undergrad classes would wear cowboy boots and camo jackets and talk about Firefly a lot.

I couldn’t deal with the dialogue at all and the bizarre made up swears were extremely jarring every single time.

True story, I went with a couple people to go see the movie, Serenity. I had no idea it was related to a cancelled TV show, and neither did my date. We’d never heard of Joss Whedon. It was a pretty decent stand alone flick.

A few years later I saw a few episodes and thought they were okay, but I’d forgotten the movie existed entirely until someone told me about the whole campaign to get a movie made after the show’s cancellation. I think Joss Whedon tries way too hard, thinks he’s a lot smarter than he really is, and uses shallow feminism as a cover for his massive pile of sexual hang ups and insecurities. And he’s got a stupid name

The Expanse is a much better space show that ended too soon. IMO, "what if space, but actually space?" is a better premise than "what if space, but cowboys?" and the internet's space nerds should obsess with that, instead.

Plus, hey, if we get another season or two a decade down the line and all the actors look old as heck, it'll work with where they left off.
