Snake wins.

I'm still waiting for my civil war game where I get to slaughter hordes of confederates (I will be waiting forever).

Though I would not want it to be historically accurate. A musket fps would be hard to pull off unless you're the groggiest of grogs.

It's fine with pubbies. I think the performance issues have been mostly sorted out, but I was lucky and never ran into any (I disabled RTX in a config file at launch which seems to have avoided most problems for lots of people, the in-game RTX options didn't actually disable it).

It had a lot of just kind of embarrassing bugs, like the aforementioned RTX option not disabling RTX, certain stats doing literally nothing, tooltips being wrong, etc. A lot of that has been fixed, but it's kind of a running joke that that stuff is par for the course for Fatshark and it still exists to some extent.

There's not much progression-wise (nothing to achieve once you hit level 30) and a lot of players are upset that getting a "perfect" weapon is RNG, coming from the Vermintide series where you could essentially just craft yourself a perfect weapon.

There have been no major content drops since release. I'm under the impression that part of this is because they had to pause development of new content to backpedal on their cash shop plans and do a lot of bug fixing (It had the FOMO rotating cosmetic thing going on but got removed/changed) but

One of the more vocal continued complaints about it is that the voice lines between characters aren't as detailed/interesting because they're not pre-gen characters anymore, they're all player-made and you choose a background that dictates your voice lines. There's an absurd amount of variety in the lines you're given but they feel kind of dissonant because they're not pre-written linear conversations, they're just random backgrounds mashing lines together.

Another major complaint is that you can't choose exactly what mission you do at any given time, you select from a list of ~18 available missions on the mission board. Some of them have fun modifiers like playing in pitch blackness and having more of a certain type of specialist enemy available, but again you can't choose exactly what you want, you have to choose from what's available at the mission board. This can lead to repeating the same mission a few times in a row if you just select random queue.

Also, all of the maps are pretty samey environment-wise. They're incredibly detailed and fun to look at, but they're all various industrial slums or sewers. There's no real environmental variety - no jungle worlds or ice worlds or anything.

Most of the ill will from the community has come from things like the devs taking a 6-week collective vacation right after launch without communicating about it with the players, and just generally that it tries to be a "live service" game when it seems like the devs don't really know what that entails.

The good is hard to explain but all of the little pieces come together so well - the way weapons feel, hit feedback on enemies or environmental objects, particle effects, sounds, lighting, relatively high skill-ceiling mobility, etc. They all just come together in an incredibly satisfying and fun way. I didn't particularly expect "more" out of the other stuff so I wasn't disappointed by it and just had fun with how satisfying the gameplay was.

NoEyedSquareGuy posted:

I played it about a week ago, it's still much the same as at launch. Roughly the same performance (though that wasn't a big issue for me), the item/weapon shop had moved in the hub but otherwise had the same selection of boring cosmetics while all the good ones are over at the paid currency store. Technically some new weapons but it was like the starting selection where a lot of them are just variations of one another, at least it seems like you can buy specific ones now instead of having to wait out the store inventory rotation. They've implemented the techpriest thing with adding blessings to weapons but I didn't play enough to use it.

Game is still fun because it was always fun but I didn't see much improvement in the systems surrounding the actual gameplay. Same as then, they would still benefit a lot from shamelessly stealing design choices
from DRG.

Late to reply to this, but thanks for all the info.I guess I'll let WH Darktide bake in the oven for another year, if it makes it that long.

Sadly, after playing Shadows of Doubt which is the closest to the supposed definition of an immersive sim as exists to this day, I have to say that it's a meaningless term because System Shock is a gread game but a bad immersive sim too.

Imo a lot of the early "immersive sims" like SS and Deus Ex 1 got a pass on "wow so cool it's like im living in this world of infinite possibility" because the standard for the day was so low. Nowadays even indie games have poo poo all over their levels and "one step up from a grey box" doesn't cut it anymore.

I've said it before but the term is both largely obsoleted because "every" game is now part RPG or has some other immsim quality (and we no longer need to clearly differentiate System Shock from Doom) and also literally nobody will ever agree on what it actually means because even the canonical progenitors of the genre are all completely different from one another.

Do you have to do the tutorial in Windowed mode before you can change the graphics options like you had to in the first Reroll?

I think it’s available from the create a file menu but if not you can change options before entering the tutorial. You start in the overworld first.

Have you heard of Fermat's principle?
I thought the immsim test was encountering a hallway with a turret in it:

*if that's all there is, it's an FPS
*if there's an airvent to circumvent it, it's a stealth game
*if there's an airvent and also a security station from which you can hack the turret, then it's an immsim

I dunno, I think it's always just something about airvents and keypads

I'm trying to figure out if I'd consider a 3rd person game an immersive sim. It seems like it shouldn't matter but it feels wrong to me. Weird West is a game that has almost all the immersive sim ingredients but it feels not quite there somehow.

i haven't been, but just looking at the trailer they seem pretty good. the character sprites look really nice and clear, which i would say is probably the one thing that would be an absolute deal-breaker for me given how much love was put into the spritework in the originals. i feel like the 2d gameworld seems stretched slightly vertically, but that could just be the new backgrounds fighting my memory.

I think a "choices MATTER" RPG means that if you negotiate with the turret rather than destroying it, at the epilogue cut scene you can see a framed painting of a turret with love hearts around it in your apartment

There are no other choices in the game but damned if they don't advertise the hell out of CHOICES MATTER on that single dialogue choice alone

Yeah Darktide was great from day 1 from a gameplay standpoint. The carrot to keep people grinding out levels was bad but it's a really fun game. I've fallen off it because I'm not super into gear ladders after a certain point but you can absolutely get your money's worth out of it just from what is in the game right now.

I would just expect it to be a 50 hour game instead of a 5000 hour lifestyle.
