FJ Cruisers seem like the ticket because I'm going to drive up skiing and need something to haul house stuff, bike stuff, etc, but don't want a 4 door SUV. Our Civic is OK, but it's kind of a turd for hauling stuff, because Honda in their infinite wisdom didn't give the 4 door folding rear seats."

"Wow! FJ Cruisers with 100k miles are 30k+. We truly live in a clownworld."

*stewing, driving Route 9, Route 2, through various roads of Upstate New York by Troy*

"I NEED SPORTSCAR. Ground rules, must be RWD, sporty, preferably 2 seater, probably Japanese."

Mental notes:

"How about an RX-8? C-West makes a nice kit you can throw on and and and "

"Wow, all these cars are completely beat to poo poo! R3 RX8s are going for ~18k, but the mileage is kind of high for Renesis issues. I really don't want to swap engines."

"350Z"

"Not talking to me at all."

"BRZ/GT86"

"Eh... They're nice, but... I don't need a commuter car really, and could go a lot more specialized" and the but part put me off.

"Mazda Miata"

"Garage Vary Winding Dancer is very appealing, but ehhhh."

"Some 90s JDM import (Evolution/RX7/choose your own turbocharged nightmare)"

"No. I love them, but I do not need another turbo mess again right now for what I want to do with cars in my life. Maybe for 20k but I am not blowing 40k on a 25 year old RX7 with a PowerFC and god knows what's going on in the bay."

"S2000"

"Ehhhhhh, clean ones are getting really pricey. I like it more than the 350z but the vast majority of them on the market are getting ragged out by tooner guys, and if I spent a little more I might be able to swing a Lotus which is just another major step up? Those are always like ~35k, right?"

"Mk5 Supra"

"A new manual Supra means reliability and dealership service! Cool! I actually like the look of these!! Let's do some calculations! If I put 15k down on a new manual Supra with financing, the 15k I put down will only cover the interest of a 9% APR loan that I will be paying 1000 dollars a month for 5 years. What a savings!"

"Porsche Boxster?"

"Not enough fursonality."

"Porsche 356 hardtop Replica"

"These look neat, but a little too much effort."

"BMW Z4 M Coupe"

"I always liked these, Oh cool, they want 40k+ for a car with 60k+ miles on it. Pass."

"Lotus Elise"

"Huh. I'm actually making okay money now. My mortgage is less than my old rent that I split with my GIRLFRIEND. It has creepy Oedipal vibes considering it's the same name as my mom. They will absolutely never ever make a car like this again that doesn't have so many nanny airbags/ICE/stupid junk weight/etc. They are nuts and bolts fixable and everything is right there. There is a very strong road racing community with them unlike my old DSM. Japanese track guys love them. Let's look at the market."

i've done a lot to the truck.
rebuilt the entire front end
greased things and fixed a lot of misc things.
welded up the trailer hitch in a more secure way.
added trailer wiring and a trailer brake controller (thanks slow_is_fast).
probably things i forgot.
i still need to fix the yellow flashing lights because i'm 5 and like flashing lights.

i loaded up the trailer and rallyx car and took it for a test ride. Putting the car all the way forward on the trailer puts about half an inch of compression into the truck... it could do with a leaf being removed.
It tows great but i know what my next project is... 454 swap.

All the cars posted in the last page and a half are good rear end cars.

I took my boys for a ride where we drove up a mountain to look at a lake and another mountain. It was a veiled excuse to test out my new onboard air compressor for inflating the tires faster. Spoiler: it works and is real good.

Had nearby shop tune it to non-base model levels:

The base model came in RWD and all the stock 280 HP models are AWD, so having the extra power in RWD model makes it more pure sports car. Or that's what I lie to myself.

The GTV 916 works if you just want to immerse yourelf in the italianess of it all. The weird looks, the noise of the engine, the torque steer. In the end it's just stiffened up 90's Fiat underpinnings with a multilink rear. The new Giulia and the Giorgio platform are something from another planet when it comes to driving dynamics. I'm dreaming of getting a Stelvio as a daily in a few years maybe.

Last I saw a 916, it was a guy that rolled into a gas station as I was filling up. The car was making so much rod knock noise I didn't believe it at first. I went over and asked if he needed any help and he looked at me and said "I just bought this yesterday, it didn't sound like this then" and looked like he was about to start crying. 3.2 V6 iirc.

It's a trick of the camera angle. they slope slightly downwards, so facing the camera closer to dead on than your brain thinks.

Yea, when I google 454 vs 6.0 I really wish the posters listed their age because I have a suspicion about a generation gap on this one lol.

I don't have a tach, but 2nd gear should be 5k rpm at 70, and the first time i tried to rev it out in 2nd towing, I made it to about 50 and the engine fell on its face and started backfiring and running like general poo poo. My first thought was timing.
After getting home I pulled off the cap and rotor and .... the mechanical advance is seized up solid and full of cobwebs (lol). The pins and bores for the weights are wollered right out, so I just bought a whole new hei distributor from JEGS, i can't wait to see how much better it runs...

I towed ~150 mile round-trip through northern newengland, not hitting a single intersate. Lots of 10-14 percent grades and it actually did really well considering my timing was fixed at 12 degrees base timing... If i'd have know i woulda set my base timing to 20 lol. I'll have to hitch up and do a test tow once I have the new dizzy, carb rebuilt, new plugs, wires, etc. You don't even feel the trailer hitting bumps and poo poo with this truck, it's a weird feeling compared to the sequoia.

i think the main disadvantage of the 8.1 is that there really isn't much aftermarket for it. if you wanna use it as-is, it's a good motor. especially if you're going to keep the stock fuel injection setup.

but you can make in excess of 500HP with a late model 454 just with a cam and springs, so having that aftermarket can be pretty nice.

they are also real expensive. the problem with an ls engine is i'd have to find some weird combo of flywheel and clutch to work with the sm465, dick with high pressure fuel pumps. etc. If i go with a 454 it's pretty much just a bolt-in affair; stab my new dizzy into the thing, put a 750cfm toilet on the top and hit the road.

It was fun to show my personal car alongside some of our cars from work (NSX-R, RS200 Evo, etc), but overall the Saturday show was a significant step down from last year I'd say.

That's what I feared based on the social media coverage, it's a great show and I hope it continues to thrive. The first year was meh, last year went amazing, it's sad to see it take a turn. Maybe it was the cold/rain? I dunno, I hope to be back next year for it.

Welp, Automotive Insanity, indeed. But am I insane if it's the upgraded model/trim with less miles and a 1 of 17 exterior/interior combo for 2018?

The S4 had 36k miles from one owner prior. Had it shipped from a Ford dealer in New Mexico and was the only Gotland Green S4 I could find on the internet with Rotor Gray interior to boot. I'm happy I can swap over all of the 034 suspension/stability parts and the RS6 paddle shifters (the actual shifters, not the TIE fighter extensions :D), as well as the Black Optics grille and Vorsteiner wheels (will be silver soon). Other than that, it drives great stock but will likely tune it and add some bolt-ons after paint correction and ceramic coating.
