They apparently found one of the mods had posted Wehrmacht painted mechs in the past under an alt, and that a bunch more had defended similar paint schemes and 'clean wehrmacht' Nazi apologia, so it shouldn't have been too much of a surprise.

Hell, back in 2021 when games workshop stomped their foot down and basically said 'gently caress off nazis' in response to the undercurrent of poo poo heads in their community, the reddit battletech mods were all too happy to have them migrate so long as it 'wasn't political'.

I think the most *insert jerkoff motion here* bit of the whole thing is they tried to set the date for their new 'no politics after this date' as 1988. Just in case anyone was confused as to what they are about.

It's a distopia, so they should be snickering and winking when the wokes are doing ritualized forever war in pride-mechs. But they're so dumb and hate so hard that they can't understand what it would mean that they have hilariously blown up their little fiefdoms rather than just accept queer people can like giant robots too.

Just played a very fun Alpha Strike game that came down to the very last dice roll.

We were playing a threeway with one guy playing BattleTech of any kind for the first time. One opponent had a heavy, very elite lance of Kurita mechs. The newcomer had two lances of three Steiner mechs. I had a nimble force consisting of a lance of mechs and a lance of tracked and hover vehicles. We were battling over a downed helicopter with sensitive data in a ruined city. You had to be the only one to have models within 2” of the objective in the middle of the map. On turn 8 the Steiner forces had to admit they had bitten off more than they had could chew and made a tactical retreat (the player had suffered a couple of bad losses and had to go anyway so he bowed out).

My mercs and the Kurita forces were left to battle it out.

It was the last turn. I had one more victory point than my opponent but my opponent was leading in terms of destroyed units so if the game would have been a draw with victory points, he would have won. At the start of the turn he had a relatively unscathed Archer and a pristine Gunslinger sitting on the objective.

I had no chance of destroying both enemy mechs in the last turn. However, what I could do was sprint an undamaged Scimitar hover tank (with 3 armor and 2 inner structure) behind the Gunslinger to block them from gaining the victory point, but it was in full view and short range of the Archer that could do 4 points of damage. The Gunslinger also could do one point of damage from the rear. They would either have to score all five points of damage or have an incredibly lucky critical roll. We were playing with the DFA damage rules so it was quite unlikely.

I decide I have no other option than to go for my rear end in a top hat maneuver. My hover tank positions itself behind the Gunslinger. The Archer unloads on it… doing 3 damage. Its armor is gone, but the Scimitar is alive. It can’t be killed by damage alone anymore.

The Gunslinger’s rear lasers activate.

My opponent rolls - and hits.

He rolls for critical… and the first and only snake eyes of the game is rolled. The Scimitar’s ammo explodes in a fiery inferno and whatever is left of the vehicle careens into the side of a skyscraper.

The Kurita mechs extract all of the information while my mercenaries retreat back to base with incomplete data. Hopefully not all of it is useless…

THAT was the kind of finish I play these games for. How exhilarating can pushing plastic toys around and rolling dice be?

Battletech has certainly not always been gay-friendly at all. It was a product of the 1980s so you have the Wolf’s Dragoons sourcebook telling an anecdote about a huge donnybrook starting between some WD troops and some McCarron’s guys because the former called the latter gay. I don’t recall any overtly LGBTQ content through the early 2000s when CBT was being run by a bunch of Bush-loving Republicans. I’m glad things have changed.

As I understand it the top level management hasn't really changed much, there's just been a concerted effort by the forum mod team to slowly change the rules and let them take action on the obviously terrible posters by pointing out that the stuff that was let slide made everyone involved look increasingly bad the longer it went on.

I always got the impression that in the BattleTech universe, a lot of bigotry is largely dead. There can be a lot of classism (especially Clans and Capellan Confederation with their actual castes, and nobility and wealth matters a lot in most places too) and some sexism (Canopians and Draconis Combine, though I think that's been toned down a bit lately.) But when it comes down to it and everyone gets hosed up on nationalism and goes off to fight tragic wars over the greed and petty ambitions of dumb rear end in a top hat leaders, what really matters to most people is that you fly the right flag and shoot at the people who fly the wrong flag.

Also speaking of the wrong flag, I just played a game with my SO who wanted to play Word of Blake so I had to find someone else to play. I was flipping through the record sheets for 3150 and found the CES-5D Caesar which instantly told me I was playing Federated Suns. Sure it's worth 3123 BV, but it has a decent set of Clan weapons, has near maximum Hardened (!) armor, Supercharger, TSM, and Talons. If it fires everything and runs in one turn it ends up at exactly 9 heat and on the next turn it has 9 MP with the Supercharger and 42 damage kicks. Just utter madness.

I don't think I played it very well and only got in one kick (on an Archangel Dominus, which had exactly 42 armor on its legs so it didn't even get a crit check) but the fear of it worked to my advantage. I was able to park some of my 'mechs on high ground and take good shots at long range because it triggered my SO's "get that thing the gently caress away from me" reflex and the huge amount of armor allowed it to soak enough damage to kill two normal heavies, including two hits to the head that would normally be fatal and enough damage to the CT to core a 100 tonner. And by the end of the game it had been stopped by a destroyed leg, but was still on the ground taking shots with most of its weapons.

I won, but I think not having to pay for C3i which stopped being useful after a couple turns of firing helped give me the edge. The couple of turns it worked really hurt but I got everyone up close and had covered the spotters in ECM in any case.

My one ECM 'mech was the ENF-6NAIS Enforcer III which is also loving stupid in its own way (5/8/5, SNPPC, LVSPL, Targeting Computer, essentially a slower longer-range Wraith). I'd definitely take it and that Caesar again without a second thought.

At the time TRO 3060 was published, there were only two Enforcer variants - the original 3025 one, and the upgraded 3050 one. I think the intent is that those were the I and II respectively.

edit: I think the original Enforcer III is pretty solid - uAC/10s have always felt pretty good to me and I use them whenever I can. In the lasy game I got my uAC/10 fix with the WVR-9R which I've wanted to take out for a spin for a while. It wasn't the MVP the same way as the Caesar and Enforcer III but it performed fairly well.

It passes my XL check because it uses the weight reduction to go faster, which is what you should probably use it for. You can make a better Enforcer with more recent technology but it's not really fair to hold it against the design at the time.

Any bigotry that exists now has largely been replaced by new national identity bigotry, and some surviving bigotry.

For instance, the Draconis Combine suppresses any non state-sanctioned religions, like Judaism or Christianity. They murdered the entire NACC hiearchy when they claimed New Avalon in 3146.

Fed Suns are actually justified with their hatred of the Combine since every time the Combine comes knocking they start doing genocide and ethnic cleansing.

I was thinking more about the recent standards of the fiction where they seem to avoid most -isms. Even Canopus got toned down in its sexism against men, where it started as seemingly a joke about feminism and eventually grew into something with a lot more nuance to it.

The early BattleTech stuff was pretty wild especially as far as its depiction of anything Asian. The 1980s was essentially prime time for stupid "yellow peril" bullshit and that leaked into BattleTech.

Trell is the wildest thing from the early books. It's a planet full of inbred morlock weirdos who hate women with midieval tech where everyone pushes their handcarts around but has a holoscreen TV and the king has a pile of hovercraft floating around. I read a section of the new Elements of Treason book dealing with the Hell's Horses, and it made me do a full-on slap the table and say "THANK YOU" a la the Office meme.

The main character of the story realizes that Trials of Position for Rank show who is the better WARRIOR, but not necessarily the best COMMANDER. They have a modified Trial in mind to determine the best two candidates in commanding at that level (through simulator battles to determine the two best commanders, with similar rosters, likely made of cadets), who would then have a normal trial for the position.

Of course, Hell's Horses are a very traditionalist clan and between "What does it matter, if a poor commander takes the position, someone else will take the position away in another trial", "Simulator battles are forbidden to determine capability, only wasteful actual combat!" and "The Founder's words should be taken as absolute, change is forbidden".. Ugh.

And it does show that Hell's Horses have absolutely stagnated. They still have a ton of Malvina Mongol Horde type followers too.

Think things will get better for the Horses, but they'll get worse first.
