The front-facing display isn't as awful as expected. Has a really strong vignette and tinting on there in passthrough.

Yeah, some neat stuff, but $3k? Not unless I can expense it to work. But that's kinda the idea, I guess.

Still though, tethered and no controllers.

e: Wait, that dude's walking around, but I think I still see a tether? Is it tethered to a phone or battery or what? Where is that tether supposedly loving going while he's storming around that giant studio.

I think it's extremely smart that they made it look like the inside of one of those inexplicably lit helmets in assorted scifi series. It's probably the best bet they have to make it a futuristic cool effect instead of a totally dweeby one.

4k per eye, if the leaks are to be believed. That puts it into “useable” territory, whereas quest 1/2 was effectively unusable for work

Yeah I’m surprised at how not-creepy it looks. And the way it “clouds over” to let other people know when you’re inside VR-content is neato.

But so far this is 100% a super premium Nreal Air so my hopes of Apple spurring a new VR content boom are quickly deflating.

I only spent a few weeks with the Nreals, but I would pay handsomely for a super premium version of that. I hated the jitter of the screens when I had them locked in place, and the “screen pasted to your head” was good for games but not for work

strong disagree here, the only possible way to redeem a front-facing display is to lean into a dumb 80s cyberpunk look. invent a panel that can use neon or something and you've at least got a shot with the vr-enthusiast/cosplay-enthusiast overlap niche, as opposed to the literally nobody who would be caught dead doing this in public.

It's actually a good idea, if you have two stereo rgb cameras in front for hand tracking and passthrough... why not use them too for video capture.

Watching this, it's clear how good Apple is at marketing. 85% of what they are showing is very mundane and/or can be done with a Quest 2 already, but still, people are 'woahhh'.

Ok apple you can watch TV on your VR headset... wow we get it

Most women don't wear flowy slacks with giant pockets, where is the lululemon yoga pants belt? I'm still convinced it's a butt plug battery pack, they can't expect women to wear pants with Real Pockets to use this, or a goofy iBelt

This is the most grim thing I've seen so far. It's one thing to starve to death in a corner plugged into VR, but watching your daughter's birthday cake candles get blown out in VR while you're in the room is just so, so much more grim than anything I could have imagined

At a minimum it can act as an external monitor for a Mac, Virtual Desktop style. No indication yet if this is generic functionality, or if it relies on the same hardware encoding optimizations as Sidecar.
