a distinction without merit we have a couple of mourning doves that nest on our property and generally hang around and have done for a few years now. they're really fun to watch. they like to fly up to the power line connected to our house and survey their domain. the parents have this incredible behaviour. when their little one starts to come out of the nest with them if you get near them, all of a sudden the parent will be near you with a wing held out and shaking funny, "oh no my wing is broken come eat me my poor wing i can't fly come eat me" and then you get close and she flies off, her distraction a success

i remember i'd get super worried when id see a dove doing that as a kid. not because they were hurt, but cause i was afraid i was gonna step on their best. i guess i was a worrier
